First, the “liberal-lites.” Then, the moderate conservatives. Then, RINOs compromisers, pragmatists, intellectuals, pundits, those with Ivy League educations, GOP governors who expand Medicaid, senators who flip-flop on gay marriage, those who don’t hate Obama enough, and anyone named Romney. Did I miss anyone the conservative base has purged in recent months? The list is long and getting longer all the time. Pretty soon, the Republicans will be able to hold their convention in a conference room at the Holiday Inn. Casting about desperately for someone else to kick to the curb, the right wing has targeted GOP political “consultants”

One of the stable of writers at Huffpo is getting the Left all up in arms over the latest complaint from the ACLU. This week, the new topic of outrage is drones, but not the ones flying over Afghanistan. (At least not today.) They’re more concerned with the idea of domestic law enforcement using the new technology to fight crime. Because they’re way worse than helicopters or something. As drone regulation legislation works its way through Congress and the 30 (so far) state legislatures where it has been introduced,

Oh, the irony. This year´s Conservative Political Action Conference has more diverse conservatives than ever speaking and all the mainstream media can do is focus on who´s not attending. Let´s get this out of the way. CPAC is a private organization and reserves the right to invite whom they want to speak. The purpose of the conference each year is to gather conservatives from all spectrums who believe in the principles of free markets, small government and individual success and responsibility. What´s great about CPAC is that its guests cover the bookends of conservatism,

WASHINGTON- The Supreme Court will struggle this week with the validity of an Arizona law that tries to keep illegal immigrants from voting by demanding all state residents show documents proving their U.S. citizenship before registering to vote in national elections. The high court will hear arguments Monday over the legality of Arizona´s voter-approved requirement that prospective voters document their citizenship in order to use a registration form produced under the federal "Motor Voter" voter registration law that doesn´t require such documentation. This case focuses on voter registration in Arizona, which has tangled frequently with the federal government

She came, she quipped, she gulped. Sarah Palin was back to her old rogue self while speaking at the 2013 Conservative Political Action conference Saturday, cracking jokes about President Obama, mentioning her ´rack´ and sipping from an oversized soda cup on stage. In what was part political speech, part a stand-up routine, Mrs Palin delivered plenty of zingers and one-liners, but offered very little in the way of substantive discourse about the challenges facing the Republican Party and the country at large. Her 25-minute meandering address to members of the Republican Party consisted of punch lines

Once, only nobles were granted an audience with the King. In America, we´ve prided ourselves on abandoning those privileges of class some 237 years ago, following that little uprising in the 13 colonies. And we again congratulated ourselves at 12:01 pm Eastern Time on January 20, 2009, just moments after Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States and as he committed to making his administration the most transparent and open in history. But more than four years later it is time to ask questions.

The intimate gathering stretched late into the night. Cigars and champagne toasts, a “picadera” of Dominican appetizers — only the finest at the well-appointed Caribbean retreat of the rich American doctor. Some of the moneyed attendees slipped into stylish guayaberas for the evening, but the guest of honor, Sen. Robert Menendez, stuck to a stodgy blue blazer with a pin on the lapel. The New Jersey Democrat posed stiffly beneath a huge cubist-style painting. He was the center of attention but still somehow out of place among the guests invited by his traveling buddy, the Palm Beach ophthalmology mogul

It was stunning for those who watched Thursday night as federal agents investigated a possible nuclear threat at Chicago’s Ogilvie Transportation Center. CBS 2´s photojournalist Lana Hinshaw-Klann happened to be at the scene and used a cell-phone camera to record agents in action. Reporter Dave Savini looks into what agents were looking for and what they found. Sources say the agents were members of the elite TSA VIPR team on the 5:04pm Union Pacific West line. They were carrying hand-held nuclear-detection devices that picked up a reading.

Vatican City - Pope Francis, giving his clearest indication yet that he wants a more austere Catholic Church, said on Saturday that it should be poor and remember that its mission is to serve the poor. Francis, speaking mostly off-the-cuff and smiling often, made his comments in an audience for journalists where he explained why he chose to take the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi, a symbol of peace, austerity and poverty. He called Francis "the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man", and added: "Oh, how I would like a poor Church, and for the poor."

Beijing - China and the United States should avoid "groundless accusations" against each other about cyber-security and hacking into each other´s computer systems, newly installed Premier Li Keqiang said on Sunday. Li´s comments, at the close of China´s annual meeting of parliament and a day after he assumed the premiership, come amid a war of words between Beijing and Washington over cyber-attacks and national security. A U.S. computer security company said last month that a secretive Chinese military unit was likely behind a series of hacking attacks mostly targeting the United States.

San Francisco - A federal judge has struck down a set of laws allowing the FBI to issue so-called national security letters to banks, phone companies and other businesses demanding customer information. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said the laws violate the First Amendment and the separation of powers principles and ordered the government to stop issuing the secretive letters or enforcing their gag orders, The Wall Street Journal reported. The FBI almost always bars recipients of the letters from disclosing to anyone — including customers — that they have even received the

Caracas, Venezuela - His frenzied followers just don’t want to say goodbye, and Hugo Chavez’s heirs say maybe they won’t have to. Ten days after his death, Chavez’s most loyal lieutenants are debating where to place his body even as they keep his memory alive with a steady stream of televised tributes and speeches extolling his self-styled revolutionary movement. The initial idea to embalm him — “like Lenin,” as the new president, Nicolas Maduro, put it — is still possible. But Maduro said that plan may prove unworkable because the government waited too long to begin preparing the body

Sitting in his workshop in San Telmo, pencil in hand, goldsmith Juan Carlos Pallarols drafts one of his most meaningful works of art: a chalice that will be delivered to “Pope Jorge” on behalf of all Argentines. Pallarols knows that this is not just another piece amongst his many other works that have earned him the reputation of being one of the best goldsmiths in the world. This is special. “It’s a particular gift, it’s for a friend, for a good man, but this is not just a gift coming from me. It comes from the Argentine population,” he said, still moved by the news.

Beirut, Lebanon - A high-ranking Syrian general who once led a military intelligence office widely believed to be a torture site has defected from the army, he said Saturday, a day after the rebels’ top military commander again called for members of the armed forces to join the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, now entering its third year. (Snip) As Europe and the United States weigh stronger action to aid the Syrian rebels, including directly arming them, Mr. Assad appeared to be appealing to those nations’ aversion to Western military interventions. Deciding whether to approve the Keystone XL pipeline is surely one of the toughest challenges of Barack Obama’s presidency. He hasn’t made up his mind yet, of course. Or has he? Bloomberg reports that the Obama administration “is preparing to tell all federal agencies for the first time that they should consider the impact on global warming before approving major projects.” Up to now, under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), federally approved projects had to consider potential impacts like dangerous spills or air pollution, but not global warming.

Chuck Hagel has made a valuable point. The good general from Vietnam believes that America should do some strategic homework before confronting North Korea. In pursuance of such an approach, the US defence secretary has shelved immediate plans to install the final phase of the US-European Missile Defence programme and transferred those resources to bolster its defence on the West Coast. The move is aimed at countering the threat from Pyongyang, which conducted its third nuclear test last month. To what extent can this strategic shift help Washington is difficult to guess, Link repaired by Staff.

The National Rifle Association, which is battling a raft of gun control measures on Capitol Hill, also has an international fight on its hand as it gears up to oppose a U.N. treaty designed to restrict the flow of arms to conflict zones. Negotiations open Monday in New York on the Arms Trade Treaty, which would require countries to determine whether weapons they sell would be used to commit serious human rights violations, terrorism or transnational organized crime. The gun lobby fears that the treaty would be used to regulate civilian weapons. Human rights activists

Capitalism means that there is much more research into male baldness than there is into diseases such as malaria, which mostly affect poor people, said Bill Gates, speaking at the Royal Academy of Engineering´s Global Grand Challenges Summit. "Our priorities are tilted by marketplace imperatives," he said. "The malaria vaccine in humanist terms is the biggest need. But it gets virtually no funding. But if you are working on male baldness or other things you get an order of magnitude more research funding because of the voice in the

No, the world ISN´T getting warmer (as you may have noticed). Now we reveal the official data that´s making scientists suddenly change their minds about climate doom. So will eco-funded MPs stop waging a green crusade with your money? Well... what do YOU think? The Mail on Sunday today presents irrefutable evidence that official predictions of global climate warming have been catastrophically flawed. The graph on this page blows apart the ‘scientific basis’ for Britain reshaping its entire economy and spending billions in taxes and subsidies in order to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. These moves have already

Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz closed out CPAC with a speech that went over the difficulties conservatives face in President Obama’s second term while highlighting two key ways they can succeed in beating back his agenda. Cruz said they have to focus on defending the constitution and championing what he called “growth and opportunity.” Cruz, sounding very much like he was giving a stump speech as much as he was rallying conservatives to their cause, went through several constitutional amendments that he believes President Obama is attacking. The first, second, fourth, sixth, and tenth amendments

One: Some of the Chinese military hackers who were implicated in a broad set of attacks against the U.S. government and corporations were identified because they accessed Facebook from the same network infrastructure they used to carry out their attacks. Two: Hector Monsegur, one of the leaders of the LulzSac hacker movement, was identified and arrested last year by the FBI. The Justice Department and a congressional committee disagree on the pace of their talks to settle a lawsuit over congressional efforts to get records related to Operation Fast and Furious, a bungled gun-tracking operation. In a joint filing Friday night, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee told the judge in the case that a settlement offer it received from the Justice Department this week was a "grave disappointment" and that a settlement is not possible. "The parties are very, very far apart," lawyers for the GOP-led committee wrote. "Indeed, they are not even
