Government Steering Americans
Toward a Tele-Work, Tele-Shop,
Mass-Transit Future
Cybercast News Service, by Susan Jones    Original Article

The Obama administration envisions a "low-carbon, low-petroleum" future where Americans tele-work, tele-shop, walk, bike and use carpools or mass transit if they must leave the neighborhood at all. A study released Friday says the U.S. has the potential to reduce petroleum use and pollution in the transportation sector by more than 80 percent by 2050. In other words, gasoline-powered cars may go the way of the dinosaur, and many Americans may end up living in planned, mixed-use, "walkable" neighborhoods, built along mass transit lines.

VIENNA – Energy drink producer Red Bull says it is being blackmailed, with the perpetrators threatening to place cans of its product contaminated with feces on supermarket shelves. The company says the threats started several weeks ago. But Marcus Neher of the Salzburg Public Prosecutor´s office said Friday that "up to now there has only been a claim of contamination," and the company also says that supermarket checks have shown no signs that the product was tampered with. The company sells its energy drink worldwide. In a statement, it says it is "cooperating closely" with police

Why Canceled White House Tours
Are Sinking Obama on the Sequester

The sequester kicked in two weeks ago. By the time the automatic spending cuts are fully realized, it could cost the country more than 700,000 jobs, shave more than $200 billion off the GDP, and result in longer lines at the airport, fewer inspectors examining the safety of the food supply, fewer agents securing the border. But for now, Washington is consumed with the Obama administration’s decision to cancel tours of the White House. According to a study by the liberal website Think Progress, since March 6 the three cable-news networks have mentioned the canceled tours 33 times as often

I greatly enjoy the new Hollywood genre in which dysfunctional American families fly to a foreign city and slaughter large numbers of the inhabitants as a kind of bonding experience. Liam Neeson takes his estranged wife and their teenage daughter for just such a vacation in "Taken 2," in which the spectacular mountain of corpses in Istanbul brings the family back together again and ends with them (spoiler alert) enjoying a chocolate malt back at the soda fountain in California and getting to know the daughter´s new boyfriend. "Don´t shoot this one, Dad," she cautions.

Is Argo “just a movie?” Or is it a disguised intelligence operation - maybe even a war crime? These questions may soon be answered in court. Well-known French lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre has met with Iranian officials planning a lawsuit against the makers and distributors of the controversial film. Mohammad Lesani, General Secretary of Monday´s Hoax of Hollywood conference in Tehran, announced, "Argo is made by three film-producing companies in Hollywood...the Islamic Republic of Iran is going to sue all those who have been active in the anti-Iran domain, including directors and producers.”

President Obama’s administration is taking heat from Republicans and fact-checkers for over-selling the effects of the sequester.[video] But that didn’t stop Obama from cracking a joke about the whole situation during an appearance in Illinois on Friday. While appearing at the Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., Obama was met by a crowd that failed to sit down — apparently because he had not told them to. “I wasn’t sure everybody had chairs there. Please feel free to sit down. I’m sorry,” he said. “Everybody was standing. I thought

Michigan Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee has been in Congress for a little more than two months, and today the leader of the free world gave him a gentle ribbing about just how new he is to Capitol Hill. At a closed-door meeting between President Barack Obama and House Democrats, Kildee introduced himself as a freshman, to which Obama said, “Wow, you’re really classing up the place then.” Kildee then proceeded to ask what one person described as a somewhat “long-winded” question about the importance of creating jobs for his economically distraught district. “I can tell you’re a freshman because

Boehner declined the invitation to travel with Biden for the inauguration mass on Tuesday of Argentina’s Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis, although he said Friday that the House will be sending its own bipartisan delegation of members. The US is to strengthen its missile defence shield on the Pacific coast in response to North Korea´s strides in developing nuclear weapons and threats of war, defence secretary Chuck Hagel announced on Friday. Hagel said the US will deploy 14 additional missile interceptors in Alaska to "make clear to the world that the United States stands firm against aggression". The additional interceptors will bring to 44 the total deployed in Alaska and California, although the numbers will not increase for four years and the defensive missiles have proved unreliable in tests.

ISLAMABAD -- The head of a U.N. team investigating casualties from U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan declared after a secret research trip to the country that the attacks violate Pakistan´s sovereignty. Ben Emmerson, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, said the Pakistani government made clear to him that it does not consent to the strikes - a position that has been disputed by U.S. officials. President Barack Obama has stepped up covert CIA drone strikes targeting al-Qaida and Taliban militants in Pakistan´s tribal region along the Afghan border since he took office in 2009.

Oregon Company to Sell Drone

Do you want to keep drones out of your backyard? An Oregon company says that it has developed and will soon start selling technology that disables unmanned aircraft. The company, called Domestic Drone Countermeasures, was founded in late February because some of its engineers see unmanned aerial vehicles—which are already being flown by law enforcement in some areas and could see wider commercial integration into American airspace by 2015—as unwanted eyes in the sky. "I was personally concerned and I think there´s a lot of other people worried about this," says Timothy Faucett, a lead engineer on the project.

For now, the Central Intelligence Agency can still maintain its official silence on whether it uses armed drones. But a new court decision Friday could force the agency to provide some information about what kind of records they have on the subject and spell out why it’s not required to say more about them. In the first judicial blow to secrecy surrounding the Obama Administration’s armed drone program, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unanimously rejected the CIA’s claim that it could refuse to confirm or deny whether it possesses any records

Sure, it’s easy to criticize Hollywood, but try to remember that the entertainment industry today is an intellectually demanding environment, fraught with cognitively challenging, even intractable, questions, like, to take one recent example: How can the cable mini-series “The Bible” be such a ratings hit when there is no audience for overtly religious entertainment programming? According to the latest Nielsens, released Tuesday, Sunday night’s telecast of “The Bible,” produced by husband-and-wife team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey for basic cable’s History channel, managed to attract more viewers than anything on broadcast network NBC … during the entire week.

At one point, Carney made a biting comment about Lee’s reporting skills during a tense exchange on the canceled White House tours, perhaps indicating that the administration’s relationship with the network is still an overtly standoffish one. Lee asked Carney about the “common ground” President Obama intends to find with Republican lawmakers on the nation’s budget issues. The press secretary answered that he will ultimately seek “a deficit reduction path by agreeing that we should pair cuts
