Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) catapulted out of his 13-hour filibuster of John Brennan’s nomination for CIA chief as a world-changing politician, the new conscience of his party, and a Republican that nonpartisan progressives should love for his defense of our Fifth Amendment rights. (For those who don’t remember their civics classes, the Fifth Amendment includes the right to not be murdered at the executive branch’s sole discretion, which was the major topic of Paul’s marathon presentation last week.) Paul is center stage now. If he wants to extend his time in the limelight and increase his star power,

After spending part of the past three days at the Capitol, the president concluded his charm offensive with a meeting with House Democrats this afternoon, telling lawmakers he believes his recent outreach has been “fruitful” as he works to coax Congress out of a stalemate on deficit reduction. “There is skepticism about bridging the divide, but we’ve got to try,” Obama told his Democratic colleagues, according to a source inside the closed-door meeting. “There will be a time for politics, but we just had an election. We need to govern.” According to another source

A millionaire businessman who threatened a burglar inside his home with a gun is facing three years in jail because he did not have a license for the weapon. George Bardwil, who owns linen company Bardwil Home, was at home in his E. 51st Street apartment in Manhattan in January, when a man broke in. Bardwil, 60, brandished the gun at the intruder, who then fled, and the businessman called 911. But when he showed police footage of the incident recorded on his home security system he was arrested on suspicion of possessing an illegal gun.

Controversy hit the new Pope yesterday as it emerged he had described Britain as “usurpers” in the Falkland Islands. Barely 24 hours after becoming pontiff, Buenos Aires-born Pope Francis, 76, was also facing questions over his relationship with Argentina’s brutal junta of the 1970s and 1980s. [Snip] In 2011 he urged people “not to forget those who had fallen during the war” and said they had “shed their blood on Argentine soil”. He added: “The Malvinas are ours. Respect for those who gave their lives must not be lost. This is our land. The Falklands are Argentine.”

In his first interview with a British newspaper since his appointment, Professor Don Berwick said that trust in the health service would only be restored by instilling a new culture that tolerates not “a single injury”. He said that he believed the NHS could be transformed into the safest health care system in the world. It should aspire to being as safe as the aviation industry, he said, arguing: “The sky’s the limit.” Prof Berwick, who used to advise Barack Obama, said wholesale changes to the “attitude or culture” of the NHS were needed if this was to happen.

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., decried President Barack Obama’s health care plan, but still painted a rosy picture of America’s future during a 15-minute speech Thursday before a major conservative convention.[Snip] Scott also praised his mentor, the late John Moniz, who ran a Chic-fil-A in the Lowcountry. “He taught me how to think my way out of poverty,” Scott said, adding that Moniz was only 36 when he died suddenly in 1986. “John Moniz’s dream still lives, and America’s finest hour is still ahead of us,” Scott said. “We are an opportunity society. Imagine U.S. Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana attacking fellow Democrats Diane Feinstein, Chuck Schumer and Richard Blumenthal over their unconstitutional gun control proposals. Further, envision Manchin granting an interview with conspiratorial radio talk show host Alex Jones, during which the senator calls Feinstein, Schumer and Blumenthal “wacko birds.” Picture the harrumphing that would emanate from the elite media…

Obama Says Iran A Year Away From Nuclear Weapon — AP. “Right now, we think it would take over a year or so for Iran to actually develop a nuclear weapon, but obviously we don’t want to cut it too close,” he said. (Snip) This probably means that Iran is going to get the bomb in about a year. In short order the Saudis and the Gulf states will have to get get their own. She and Hillary Clinton would make an extraordinary ticket. First Lady Michelle Obama, fresh off her cameo at the Oscars, is now making her second appearance on the cover of Vogue. The issue comes out on March 26, but the iconic fashion magazine unveiled the cover on Thursday. Shot by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, Mrs. Obama wears a blue dress by one of her favorite designers, Reed Krakoff. And perhaps predictably, the recent burst of glitzy publicity has touched off speculation that the first lady is raising her profile

The Obama administration said Thursday it had rearrested and brought back four of the most dangerous immigrants it released from detention last month in the run-up to the budget sequestration. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton testified to Congress that his agency released 10 “level one” offenders, and has gone out and apprehended four of them. He said the other six are nonviolent. Mr. Morton also acknowledged that overall, 2,228 immigrants were released — far more than the several hundred the agency had initially acknowledged

Fresh off his filibuster that captured the hearts of libertarian conservatives, Sen. Rand Paul told attendees Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference that the Republican Party has become “stale” and must return to basic constitutional principles if it wants to ignite a political revolution. Mr. Paul was the star of the conservative “Facebook generation” youth movement that paraded across CPAC’s stage Thursday, joining others such as Sens. Marco Rubio, Mike Lee and Tim Scott — all of whom were elected after President George W. Bush left office.

In choice of both topic and foil, Rand Paul’s now legendary Senate filibuster was a stroke of political genius. The topic was, ostensibly, very narrow: Does the president have the constitutional authority to put a drone-launched Hellfire missile through your kitchen — you, a good citizen of Topeka to whom POTUS might have taken a dislike — while you’re cooking up a pot roast? The constituency of those who could not give this question a straight answer is exceedingly small. Unfortunately, among them is Attorney General Eric Holder. Enter the foil

When it comes to Republicans, President Obama sees himself as a kind of reverse Sally Field: They don’t like him. They really, really, don’t like him. Judging by the junior high school behavior of House members who snarkily live-tweeted the president’s closed-door meeting Wednesday, this seems a rather accurate assessment. “Stuck getting Obama ‘charm offensive’ right now when we should be talking about #balancedbudget .?.?. or is it ‘offensive charm’?” tweeted Arizona Republican Matt Salmon, as chronicled by Slate’s David Weigel. “President to House GOP: Closing WH

For three nights in a row, protests have broken out in New York City against the police. On Wednesday night, 46 people were arrested in East Flatbush, in Brooklyn, N.Y., during protests over the shooting death of 16-year-old Kimani Gray. In case you haven´t been following the story, there are two competing narratives at the heart of the controversy. In one, plainclothes officers stop Gray on Saturday night, and react after he pulls a .38-caliber gun on them. Paul J. Browne, chief spokesman for the New York Police Department, gave this account to the Village Voice:

Four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, were killed in the attack, and the Obama administration faced intense criticism from Republicans in the aftermath over security problems and apparent inconsistencies in officials explanation of what happens. Minutes before 10 a.m. on weekdays at the Bay Bridge toll plaza, you can find a half-dozen cars on the side of the freeway, hazard lights flashing. It isn´t a mass breakdown. It´s drivers trying to save a couple bucks by waiting until the clock ticks past 9:59 a.m. and the toll to cross the bridge drops from $6 to $4. The drivers are breaking the law and are a danger to themselves and others on the road, said Officer Sam Morgan, a California Highway Patrol spokesman. "It is not encouraged and it is a citable," Morgan said.

Talk about white smoke: I am told, by Republican sources, that President Obama got standing ovations at the beginning and end of his meeting today with House Republicans on Capitol Hill — his first such meeting in four years. There were tough questions and no breakthroughs, but a source inside the closed-door meeting called it “very cordial” and told me that virtually every House Republican who stood up to ask a question began by saying, “Thank you for coming” and “You are welcome here anytime.” Some added, “We need to work together.”

Though the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate forcing employers to violate their conscience by providing birth control and pills that cause abortions has been temporarily stopped today in a Federal District Court, there is no question the Obama Administration will appeal all the way up to the Supreme Court. This is the fight of our time. Either this country will stand for religious freedom, or it won´t. And we will know the answer if the courts allow the government (by way of the HHS to brazenly) violate the First Amendment by

The Los Angeles Times ran a Thursday editorial by Middlebury College Professor Bill McKibben arguing that allowing millions of illegal immigrants into America will reduce global warming. “I feel it´s urgent that we get real immigration reform, allowing millions to step out of the shadows and on to a broad path toward citizenship,” wrote McKibben. “It will help, not hurt, our environmental efforts, and potentially in deep and powerful ways.” McKibben says that while the average American has a larger carbon footprint than a person living in the developing world, bringing more immigrants

On Wednesday, WA Sen. Patty Murray unveiled the first budget proposal from Senate Democrats in 4 years. Looking at the top-line numbers, it is easy to see why the Democrats were so coy with their spending plans. Virtually ignoring the debt crisis that is causing the public deep anxiety, the Democrats plan to boost spending by 62% over the next ten years. Federal spending this year will top out at $3.6 trillion. At the start of the recession in 2007, federal spending was just $2.7 trillion. Under the Democrat´s plan, however, over the next ten years spending

Before carrying out the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Adam Lanza conducted research on several mass murders, sources close to the investigation into the shooting have told The Courant. The Courant had previously reported that investigators found news articles about Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik at Lanza´s Newtown home. Sources now say that investigators found articles and other documents related to other mass murders in one of two bedrooms he used in the house that he shared with his mother, Nancy. Lanza killed 26 people,

The president told Americans to gird for a disaster. Sequestration would result in unspeakable suffering. The elderly would starve; kids would miss vaccinations; teachers would be laid off; airplanes would crash mid-air due to a dearth of air traffic controllers. And don’t bother calling for help—no one’s coming thanks to massive layoffs of police and firefighters. Fast forward to today. America is still standing. The public is still waiting for the wave to hit. Now President Obama has launched a charm offensive toward the Republicans who called his alarmist bluff.

It’s just one of those things that’s just a straight loss,” he said. “You’d think it would be lucrative, but it’s not really a friendly environment for new technology, it really isn’t.” The actor has made tabloid
