Italian journalist says

Just hours after his dramatic election as leader of the Catholic world, an Italian journalist in Rome said the first thing Pope Francis did was to call her up for a friendly chat. "The phone rang... My son picked it up and it was the pope," Stefania Falasca, a former editor for a Catholic monthly, told Italian media. "At home we just called him ´father´, we never called him ´eminence´. I didn´t know what to say. I asked him ´Father, what am I meant to call you? Holy Father?´" she said. "He laughed and he told me 'The first phone call I wanted to make was to say hello to you, Gianni and the kids,'" she said.

Unfit For Office: Thomas

Politics: A secretary of labor´s job is to be a fair arbiter between workers and employers. But Thomas Perez, now shortlisted for the job, is so radical he makes the last labor secretary, Hilda Solis, look like Ayn Rand. Just say no. Make a list of all the most outrageous, extremist and divisive acts of the Obama administration and odds are they will intersect in the person of Assistant U.S. Attorney General Thomas Perez, who´s run the Department of Justice´s troubled civil rights division since 2009.

Religion: The change that swept Eastern Europe in the 1980s and fueled the collapse of the Soviet Union may find itself repeated by a new pope with similar disdain for the authoritarian governments of his region. When Cardinal Karol Wojtyla stepped out on the balcony of St. Peter´s in 1978 as Pope John Paul II, Soviet communism still stood astride Eastern Europe and his native Poland. He would be the moral force helping to lead half a continent out of the human bondage of totalitarianism. Argentina´s 76-year-old Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis I

DETROIT - A bankruptcy expert who collected more than $1 million in fees helping to manage Chrysler´s restructuring is the top candidate to take over Detroit´s purse strings as emergency financial manager, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday. Kevyn Orr, a partner in Washington with Jones Day, one of the biggest U.S. law firms, is expected to be named to the post by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder later this week, the source said. Orr´s name emerged on the same day that officials of the cash-strapped city made one last

Shallow Waters: The commander of America´s Pacific forces says he knows what the top security risk is in that region. No, it´s not China. Nor is it North Korea. It´s climate change. Yes, this is embarrassing. It´s also an outrage. Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III´s job is to assess the military threats in the Pacific and to defend his country from them. Not to appraise the climate. Not to protect the environment. Not to join the ranks of the superficial who desperately want to demonstrate their depth and earnestness by taking up trendy and politically correct causes.

Conservatism Means Replacing Big

The president´s second inaugural address was an advertisement for the biggest, most expensive government the world has ever known. It was a pitch for new government solutions, more government programs, and the promises of government-made utopia. Of course, no mention was made about the future cost of the president´s vision for the country, how to pay for it, or the damage that will occur from increasing our debt. Conservatives hear this message and get pulled into a debate over the proper size of government, or whether a certain policy represents good government or bad government.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service says 660,000 taxpayers will have their refunds delayed by up to six weeks because of a problem with the software they used to file their tax returns. The delay affects people claiming education tax credits who filed returns between Feb. 14 and Feb. 22. H&R Block, the tax preparing giant, says that some of its customers were affected but the company has resolved the problem. A limited number of other software companies have also had problems, but IRS spokeswoman Michelle Eldridge declined to name them.

This week the Obama administration announced that due to the awful, terrible, nasty, horrible sequestration, they would have to shut down the White House tours for the public. The same week, a White House source told the Daily Mail that Michelle Obama was planning a birthday blowout for her 50th. In attendance: Adele and Beyonce. The White House did say that the Obamas would pay for the party. But that’s highly unlikely – it’s supposed to take place at the White House, which requires Secret Service protection, high-class dining, and all the fringe benefits. The White House website

"The popular media narrative is that this country has shifted away from conservative ideals, as evidenced by the last two presidential elections. That’s what they think. That’s what say. That might be true if Republicans had actually nominated conservative candidates in 2008 and 2012," Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) said in his address at CPAC this afternoon. Perry also slammed President Obama for undocumented illegal immigration being released from detention centers due to sequestration cuts. "This president´s posture, it´d be laughable if he hadn´t taken it one step too far, dangerously releasing criminals onto our streets to make

Well, shoot… When I pulled Toure´s name in the office pool to see who would be the first lefty to race-bait CPAC, it seemed like a sure winner. In Toure´s defense, though, his MSNBC show doesn’t air until the afternoon, which gives Slate´s Dave Weigel an edge; an edge this fierce GOP antagonist took full advantage of on CPAC´s opening day … at 9:34 am! Congrats, Dave. Quite the work ethic: One of the first speeches at CPAC came from former Rep. Allen West, a black conservative who delighted—and delights—in telling liberals they patronize and misunderstand blacks.

OXON HILL, Md.- Tired of election defeats, conservatives are searching for their next Mr. or Mrs. Right. They say they want a leader brash enough to protect conservative orthodoxy and open-minded enough to help the Republican Party change its image: white, old, and male. And there´s no shortage of Republicans angling to fill a void in party leadership as the GOP´s future dominates the sideline discussion during a three-day summit of conservative leaders. From the dozens of luminaries on stage to the thousands of activists crowding hallways, Republicans at this week´s Conservative Political Action Conference are looking for

Starting on February 15, 2013, ICE began releasing suspected illegal aliens from a number of ICE facilities

Though details on al-Shibli´s capture are fairly scant, sources indicated to CNN´s Barbara Starr that he is a known member of the Libyan Islamist Fighting Group, which has long been considered an auxiliary unit of al Qaeda. al-Shibli is the

Last month a three-year-long federal prosecution of Blackwater collapsed. The government’s 15-felony indictment—on such charges as conspiring to hide purchases of automatic rifles and other weapons from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives—could have led to years of jail time for Blackwater personnel. In the end, however, the government got only misdemeanor guilty pleas by two former executives, each of whom were sentenced to four months of house arrest, three years’ probation, and a fine of $5,000. Prosecutors dropped charges against three other executives named in the suit and abandoned the felony charges altogether.

The first Latin American and the first Jesuit to become Pope in the church’s 2,000-year history, the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio is believed to have been the runner-up when Pope Benedict XVI was chosen in 2005. There is a famous saying among dog handlers: emotions run down-leash. Just as with a soldier, combat can affect a military dog. Canine Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as it was named in 2010, identifies military dogs showing signs of hyper-vigilance and hyper-responsiveness to noises and other environmental stimulants. American Thinker interviewed experts on this subject, including the renowned Dr. Walter F. Burghardt, Jr., a retired colonel, DVM, Ph.D., and DACVB.

But there´s some incredible things about this man. He is a classic Catholic theologian.

Keith Olbermann has settled his $50 million lawsuit with Current TV, bringing an end to the almost year-long legal dispute over the outspoken host´s dismissal from the liberal news network. The terms of the settlement, which was reported earlier this week, were not released. But two sources familiar with the negotiations now tell POLITICO that during the mediation stage, Olbermann´s legal representatives cited his inability to get a job at another network -- a move one source close to the negotiations interpreted as an effort to gain sympathy for Olbermann. "One of the cards his people played was hardship,"

Last week I wrote about the entertaining series of stories in which reporters asked Senate Democrats why they didn’t stand with Rand Paul during his filibuster of John Brennan over civil liberties concerns. I noted that congressional Democrats judge foreign policy stands on partisanship alone, and the Democrats’ confused responses to reporters last week signaled they thought reporters were in on the joke. But there are Democrats outside of government starting to pipe up on the issue of drones and secrecy, and it suggests Paul’s filibuster was even more successful from a publicity standpoint than it seemed at the time.

I understand that at this point commenting on anything Sarah Palin does is like socking a punching bag that has been slowly deflating since 2008, but she has just announced that she is coming out with a Christmas book, and I couldn’t help myself. Well, more specifically, a book about the War on Christmas. This is the moment that most I feared when I gave her up cold turkey months ago. My sponsor is going to have some stern words for me. Still… Titled “A Happy Holiday IS a Merry Christmas,” it seems destined to go
