The White House would not answer a question about the cost of security for President Barack Obama’s golf outings or the president’s trip to Illinois this week when compared to the cost of the recently cancelled White House tours. During the press briefing Wednesday, a reporter asked about the cost of Obama’s trip this Friday to Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., compared to the $74,000 per week cost of Secret Service security for White House tours. “The president represents all of the people, and he travels around the country appropriately,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

Senate Democrats’ budget includes

The first budget from Senate Democrats in four years includes nearly $1 trillion in new taxes but would not balance the budget. The blueprint unveiled by Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) on Tuesday to her Democratic colleagues would also turn off the next nine years of the sequester and replace those spending cuts with a 50-50 mix of tax increases and spending cuts. The budget would dedicate $100 billion to economic stimulus in the form of infrastructure spending and job training. Murray argues that her budget cuts $1.85 trillion from deficits over 10 years.

United Nations-An "unholy alliance" of Iran, Russia, the Vatican and others is threatening to derail a U.N. declaration urging an end to violence against women and girls by objecting to language on sexual, reproductive and gay rights, some U.N. diplomats said Wednesday. (Snip) "There´s this sort of unholy alliance coming together to oppose language on sexual health, reproductive rights and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) rights," one senior U.N. diplomat said. Venezuela´s acting president Nicolas Maduro joked on Wednesday that late leftist president Hugo Chavez´s recent death must have played into the selection of the first Latin American pope. "We know that our commander has risen up there and is face to face with Christ," Maduro said, to an outburst of laughter at a political event, just over a week after Chavez died following 14 years in charge of Venezuela. "Something must have influenced things so that a South American pope was chosen. Some new hand arrived and got to Christ and said: It is South America´s time.

Wisconsin Education Officials
Want Students to Wear
´White Privilege´ Wristbands

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction runs several programs that heavily emphasize racial issues in public schools, EAGnews.org has been finding. Some feel that one of those programs – an Americorps operation called VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) – may go a bit overboard by encouraging white students to wear a white wristband "as a reminder about your (white) privilege." Geared towards high school students, the program "seeks to build capacity in schools and districts serving low-income families to develop an effective, sustainable, research-based program of family-school-community partnerships," according to its Facebook page. That sounds reasonable enough.

Standards: Bullied by President Obama´s new consumer watchdog, the Big Three consumer credit bureaus have curved credit scores for deadbeats. The capitulation is a bad omen for the economy. The credit-scoring system underpins our economy. If lenders and insurers can´t rely on it, they can´t make sound judgments about the risks involved in millions of transactions each day. Yet the system is being socialized thanks to a campaign by the administration to falsely smear it as inaccurate and biased against minorities. The campaign began in 2011 when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau investigated scoring models used by the consumer credit-reporting agencies.

California Democrat Pete Stark finished 40 years in Congress in January. The 81-year-old proclaimed himself pleased with the half of his life spent in "public service" on Capitol Hill, yet the public has suffered disastrously from his efforts allegedly on its behalf. Federal spending, deficits and debt have skyrocketed. The U.S. has engaged in endless, bloody and unnecessary wars. Entitlement programs have exploded out of control, threatening America´s financial future. The wasteful burden of inefficient regulation has climbed as job creation has stalled. The war on drugs has morphed into nanny-state regulation of cigarette smoking and soda drinking.

ObamaCare: Does anyone remember hearing that one of the blessings of health reform would be doing your taxes a second time? Filling out fifteen pages and paying $1 trillion in taxes are just the latest ObamaCare surprises. ´1040" is not most Americans´ lucky number. Yet hardly as unlucky as the digits in ObamaCare. The latest is that a three-person family is going to have to fill out a 15-page form to enjoy health benefits, with 21 steps to go through over those pages. It makes the Internal Revenue Service´s 1040 form a stroll in the park by comparison.

The former chief of staff to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who was censured by his state legislature in 2009 after admitting an affair with an Argentine woman, joked on Twitter that "nobody complains when the College of Cardinals goes to Argentina.” The tweet was a reference to Wednesday´s election of Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the next pope. Bergoglio will assume the name Pope Francis I. Sanford drew fire in 2009 when he disappeared for nearly a week in June with his whereabouts unknown by his wife and his security detail.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio is Argentine, so, when he was elected pope today, the reaction in Argentina was naturally exuberant. Despite that, the news actually caused a fracas to break out in the Chamber of Deputies, which is the lower house (Snip) The dispute had to do with whether or not the legislators should drop what they were doing when the news came in and listen to Bergoglio’s remarks. Normally, that would seem to be an easy choice. But they were in the middle of a ceremony to mark the death of fellow Latin American leader Hugo Chavez.

Philadelphia — Talk about a baptism by fire: On the first day of Lauren Colegrove’s journalism internship at Catholic News Service in Rome, the pope announced his resignation. The Villanova University junior thought she’d spend her first day filling out paperwork and undergoing orientation. Instead, she ran over to the Vatican Press Office to attend a news conference and later conducted interviews in St. Peter’s Square. “It’s pretty hard to have a more exciting first day of work than that,” Colegrove said in an email interview. Vice President Biden, an observant Catholic, will lead the U.S. delegation to Rome for Pope Francis’s installation, a White House official confirmed. No dates have been announced, but the ceremony could take place as early as Tuesday on behalf of Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, who was selected Wednesday. Biden has served as one of President Obama’s informal religious advisers on matters concerning the Catholic Church, including the debate over contraception last year under the administration’s new health-care law.

Obama´s answer: "Well, I´ve gotta tell you that--in terms of practical politics, what I´ve seen is a healthy debate taking place state by state, and not every state has the exact same attitudes and cultural mores.

New Pope Francis I is a conservative in the mold of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II. That’s especially true on the issue of abortion, which he called a “death sentence” for the unborn in 2007. “We aren’t in agreement with the death penalty,” he said during that speech, “but in Argentina we have the death penalty. A child conceived by the rape of a mentally ill or retarded woman can be condemned to death.” In his writings, Francis wrote, “we should commit ourselves to ‘eucharistic coherence,’ that is, we should be conscious that people cannot receive holy communion

After five ballots and just over a day, the 115 cardinal electors have selected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new successor to the Apostle Peter and head of the Catholic Church. He will assume the papal name Francis I. Pope Francis was an unexpected choice. At gambling site PaddyPower, his odds shortly before he was identified were 25-to-1, making him something of a long-shot. How unexpected was his selection? In crafting a biography of him, National Catholic Reporter suggested that he "at least merits a look." Until today, Francis serves as cardinal-archbishop of
