CARACAS, Venezuela —Henrique Capriles, a young governor who ran a spirited but unsuccessful effort to unseat President Hugo Chavez in an October election, said Sunday he will run against the late president’s hand-picked successor in a snap vote that will determine the future of the late leader’s self-styled socialist revolution. Capriles, 40, said he will accept the nomination of a coalition of opposition groups to face off on April 14 against Nicolas Maduro, who served Chavez as vice president until Chavez died Tuesday after a long ordeal with cancer. On Friday, Maduro, 50, was inaugurated president and vowed

Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) held the Senate floor for 12 straight hours this week, from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday morning, in an attempt to block the nomination of John Brennan to lead the CIA. But the junior senator from Kentucky had a much deeper purpose – namely, seeking an answer to what he saw as a fairly straight-forward question: Can the president order the extra-judicial killing of a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil in a non-battlefield context? Though the filibuster is over, the Obama administration still has yet to clearly and directly answer that question.

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — The giant yellow snowplows that wake Yellowstone from its winter slumber every March are idled, waiting for the sun to make up for federal budget cuts that are forcing the park to open late for peak season. Mandatory cuts kicked in three days before the plows were to start clearing snow and ice from 300 roads at altitudes that reach 11,000 feet. Faced with an order from Washington to slice $1.8?million from his budget, the park superintendent, Dan Wenk, had considered his options.

LAHORE, Pakistan –Hundreds of Christians protesting the burning of their homes by a Muslim mob over alleged blasphemous remarks made against the Islam´s Prophet Muhammad clashed with police on Sunday in eastern and southern Pakistan. Around 150 people have been arrested for setting dozens of Christian houses on fire in the eastern city of Lahore after a non-Muslim was accused of making offensive comments about the prophet, police said. Christians across the country rallied against the incident, but the main demonstrations were in Lahore, the southern port city of Karachi, the capital, Islamabad, and the adjoining city of Rawalpindi.

On this weekend’s broadcast of the syndicated “Inside Washington” television program, conservative Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer blasted Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s recent filibuster and mocked the idea of a drone attack on United States soil.“Well look, I am grateful he raised this issue, because I think we have reached a point in the country where we are sick and tired of the way the administration is going around blowing people to kingdom come while sitting in their living rooms because of a suspicion — I’m talking about Americans,” Krauthammer said.

DUNLAP, California - The California wildlife sanctuary where an African lion attacked and killed a worker last week reopened on Sunday, allowing the public to view all the remaining wild cats, including the lion´s mate. Project Survival´s Cat Haven resumed regular operations, including guided tours, with the consent of the family of Dianna Hanson, founder Dale Anderson said at a news conference. (Snip) A 4-year-old male lion named Cous Cous escaped from his feeding pen, apparently by pushing open an improperly secured gate, and pounced on Hanson, fracturing her neck and killing her instantly, Fresno County Coroner David Hadden said.

KABUL—America´s fraught ties with Afghanistan suffered a jarring blow Sunday, when Afghan President Hamid Karzai said during a visit by the new U.S. defense secretary that the Taliban was killing Afghan civilians "in service to America." The remarks, in a televised speech hours before Mr. Karzai´s meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, capped a series of confrontations between the Afghan president and the U.S. over his demands to assert Afghan sovereignty and curtail American military operations. Mr. Karzai met Mr. Hagel a day after suspected Taliban suicide bombers killed at least 18 people

Electric cars are promoted as the chic harbinger of an environmentally benign future. Ads assure us of "zero emissions," and President Obama has promised a million on the road by 2015. With sales for 2012 coming in at about 50,000, that million-car figure is a pipe dream. (Snip) If a typical electric car is driven 50,000 miles over its lifetime, the huge initial emissions from its manufacture means the car will actually have put more carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere than a similar-size gasoline-powered car driven the same number of miles.

One creative father has used his cartoon drawing skills to bring a little humor to his children´s lunchtime sandwiches. David Laferriere has been doodling on the plastic Ziploc bags with a Sharpie marker since 2008 - before taking a quick snap of his handiwork and posting it to his Flickr account. The graphic designer has now done more than a thousand drawings which range from dinosaurs and monsters to goldfish and ducks. His children only get a look at the artwork when they open their bags later in the day. Mr Laferriere, from Attleboro, Massachusetts, explains:

If democracy requires an informed citizenry to function well, the United States is in serious trouble. Many Americans are political ignoramuses. It doesn´t take much effort to describe the typical citizen´s political ignorance. The Pew Research Center for The People & The Press, for example, has plumbed random samples of the public´s public affairs knowledge about twice a year since 2007. The questions have varied in substance and format, but the results have been uniformly dismal. The average correct score is usually just above 50% which, if judged by the usual academic standard --90+% = A,

WASHINGTON- Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Sunday likened political reporters to "crack addicts" and "heroin addicts" during a tour of morning talk shows that drew repeated questions about the still-distant 2016 presidential election. Bush, capping a media-heavy week that sparked chatter about a presidential campaign for a third member of his family, tried to keep the conversation focused on his book "Immigration Wars." But as Bush wrapped up a conversation with NBC´s David Gregory," he likened journalists and their questions about the 2016 campaign to drug addicts. "Who´s the hottest Florida politician right now? Tiger Woods ticked off the 98th victory of his professional career on Sunday, as he duly completed his domination of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. Woods, a 14-time major champion, claimed the 17th World Golf Championship title of his career around the Blue Monster - eventually triumphing by two shots in a tournament he led from start to finish. Beginning the day with a four-shot advantage, the American was only fleetingly threatened on his way to the winner´s enclosure - as Graeme McDowell, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker all briefly alluded to a back nine challenge before eventually slipping away.

The self-assured power of the Bay Bridge has never received the respect it deserves, and the latest slight comes from an unlikely source: 25,000 LED lights that will adorn the span for the next two years. The lights are attached to 300 suspender cables that line the Marin-facing side of the bridge between Yerba Buena Island and Rincon Hill. The installation is programmed as an abstract wash of light with patterns that spill across the vertical cables from dusk until 2 a.m. The coolness quotient? Off the chart. Social and mainstream media have been buzzing since the display

The reaction of some hawks on the right to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s filibuster suggests a refusal to recognize why Paul was so successful in garnering praise. They are seemingly unable to recognize the deeply held perception of many, if not most, of the American people that Iraq and Afghanistan were unsuccessful and that enthusiasm for the Arab Spring is misplaced. They have lost credibility with the American people and they need to both acknowledge that and strive to get it back. Internationalists like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and his policy mavens have not gone back to make the case

The latest Republican pronouncements on saving Medicare, via Rep. Paul Ryan’s upcoming budget plan, reminds me of a Roger Rabbit cartoon -- characters careening around, some just missing the vat of acid, others not. Last year, certain Republicans told us if you were 55 or older, your Medicare benefits would be “safe,” but today’s rumors revise that age to be upward of 57. I can smell that vat of acid getting closer. But there’s a much easier way to reduce Medicare costs. Honestly, it won’t hurt a bit.

Last week on Hannity a “Democratic Strategist” named Zerlina Maxwell told Sean and his audience that guns are not the proper deterrent to dissuade rapists, but rather “teaching men not to rape is the key”. When I heard that chunk of stupidity I blew apple juice out of my nostrils -- and I haven’t had any apple juice in the last eight years. That’s what you call “strategy”, Zerlina? Man, I hope she advises the Dems in the upcoming midterms and in 2016, because she’s denser than a chunk of Turkish walnut.

Good old The Queen, eh? In between waving and opening garden centres, she´s now become a female Peter Tatchell. At least, that´s what today´s Mail on Sunday front page story would have you believe with its front page headline: Queen fights for gay rights. [Snip] Leaving aside "an historic" - which makes me wince - what is this controversial pledge? It´s the new Commonwealth Charter, which states: "We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds." Walters reports: The ‘other grounds’ is intended to refer to sexuality

First there’s a tap on the shoulder. A huge palace-guard policeman in full body armour and a black balaclava uses a riot stick to suggest it’s time to go. Then he swings the truncheon high in the air and it comes down with a sickening thud on the back of a demonstrator. [Snip] The President of Haiti, Michel Martelly, stands just yards away, surrounded by a crowd of 10,000 people in the central square of the capital Port-au-Prince. This pop-star leader--a former Creole singer known as ‘Sweet Micky’--is lapping up the attention despite the obvious concern for his safety.

Ryan believes that he can save $770 billion over 10 years if Obamacare is repealed. All those Obamacare tax increases would be repealed too, and his proposal includes sending Medicaid block grants to states. This begs the question of where Ryan finds all those savings? Especially since without mandated insurance, there are still going to be millions of people uncovered. The uninsured aren’t going to just disappear, and there are at least 20 million of them. And they get sick. When they can’t pay the bill, government has to step in and pay it anyway. Still, Ryan’s point is valid

No, this is not a satire piece from The Onion. And don´t worry, I can assure you that you are indeed, awake so don´t bother pinching yourself. President Barack Obama actually had some nice things to say about Republicans. Politico: In the span of one week, President Obama has gone from villifying Republicans in Congress to calling them "principled people who want what´s best for this country." Yes, he has wined them and dined them in private, and now his public rhetoric has done an about-face as well. In his weekly address, Obama explains he´s been "reaching out

Actress and potential Senate candidate Ashley Judd´s aging pets may have been a deciding factor in her choice to part with a renovated Scottish estate worth millions, according to a 2012 interview. Judd and then-husband Dario Franchitti, a Scotland native, put Rednock, their renovated mansion in central Scotland, up for sale in the summer of 2012, close to six months before announcing their divorce in January 2013. The estate listing asked for nearly $6 million. According to a profile of the property in the UK´s Sunday Times, the actress said she was reluctant to put the eight-bedroom rural home

The Iranian president´s domestic opponents reacted furiously after photos emerged of him giving Elena Frias de Chavez, 78, a consoling hug at last Friday´s funeral in Caracas - at which he also kissed Mr Chavez´s coffin. Religious conservatives said the act insulted Iran´s religious dignity and amounted to "haram" – a term used to describe a religiously forbidden act under Islamic rules. Mohammad Taghi Rahbar, the Friday prayer leader of Iran´s second city, Isfahan, told Mehr news agency that Mr Ahmadinejad had "lost control".
