Were it not for a a single post at the Weekly Standard, Michelle Obama and John Kerry would have presented the International Women of Courage Award to Samira Ibrahim on Friday afternoon. This despite the fact that Ibrahim is a raging anti-Semite and celebrant of 9/11, including the Islamist observation of the anniversary at the American embassy in Cairo this past September. In Washington for the ceremony, Ibrahim first pleaded that the offending statements in her Twitter account resulted from hacking. She may be a woman of courage, but she is both a hater and a liar

This past week has been a news filled bonanza of important events. Let me start with the demise of the Dictator of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, who succumbed to cancer after his extensive treatment in Cuba.(Snip) It is possible that he may yet get the Nobel Peace award posthumously for his nationalizing businesses and bringing 24 percent, or there about, inflation to his country. It is amazing that a country blessed with humongous oil reserves should still have naked poverty and huge unemployment after 14 years of enlightened rulership. One thing he reportedly did do well was to amass a private

Vatican City -- Cardinals from around the world gather this week in a conclave to elect a new pope following the stunning resignation of Benedict XVI. In the secretive world of the Vatican, there is no way to know who is in the running, and history has yielded plenty of surprises. Yet several names have come up repeatedly as strong contenders. Here is a look at who they are: Cardinal Angelo Scola: Scola is seen as Italy´s best chance at reclaiming the papacy, following back-to-back pontiffs from outside the country that had a lock on the job for centuries.

"Ok, the Republicans surprised us and hung tough on cutting some of the increase we´d hoped for in next year´s budget: what are we gonna do bout dat? Well Sir, we at INS have already taken action to show the public how painful those cuts will be. We´ve already released more than 2,000 illegal immigrants we´d held in our detention centers.(Snip)...cut the ammunition provided to front line troops. When those desert outposts run out of ammo, and are overrun by fanatical Arabs, the ignorant public will get the damn message. Look how excited they became over just that Benghazi thing.

A little bunt single turned this WBC matchup into a World Boxing Classic. Alfredo Aceves and several players threw nasty punches when a fierce, full-scale brawl broke out in the ninth inning Saturday of Canada´s 10-3 romp over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, a melee that also involved fans and set off skirmishes in the seats.

He is the baby-faced, basketball-mad leader of North Korea--said to have had plastic surgery to look more like his illustrious grandfather. Fond of funfairs and theme parks, he recently arranged the import of salt water for a new attraction so the dolphins could frolic more freely, at a time when many of his people have no access to fresh drinking water. Last year he staged a Mickey Mouse pageant, complete with mini-skirted young women playing violins in front of an enormous screen showing the film Rocky 1V. With his ‘buzz-cut’ hairstyle, he has become something of a style icon

President Hamid Karzai has issued a stinging rebuke to the US and the Taliban, saying they are both guilty of sowing fears for post-2014 Afghanistan. He said Taliban suicide attacks on Saturday were aimed at intimidation that would prolong the presence of international troops in Afghanistan. [Snip] He suggested both the US and Taliban were trying to convince Afghans the situation would worsen after 2014. He said: "Yesterday´s bombings in the name of the Taleban were aimed at serving the foreigners and supporting the presence of the foreigners in Afghanistan and keeping them in Afghanistan by intimidating us."

My joke writers have been placed on furlough. (Laughter.) I know a lot of you reported that no one will feel any immediate impact because of the sequester. A candidate indicted for crimes against humanity has been declared winner of Kenya´s presidential election today by just 8,400 votes. [Snip] With the 51-year-old in the top job, Kenya will become the second African country after Sudan to have a sitting president indicted by the International Criminal Court. Opposition leader, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, responded by saying ´democracy is on trial´ in the country. The U.S. and other Western powers, big donors to the east African nation, said before the vote that a Kenyatta win would complicate diplomatic ties with a nation viewed as a vital ally in

An RAF base in Britain is being used by America in its controversial drone warfare campaign, it was claimed last night. Documents seen by The Mail on Sunday reveal that the United States has established a drone ‘operations centre’ in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside which could be used to co-ordinate attacks in the Middle East and Africa. Last night, the revelation sparked claims of British complicity in the US Airforce (USAF) assassination programme which is being investigated by the United Nations. [Snip] The weapon has killed hundreds of people in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen.

The Air Force has erased data on drone strikes in Afghanistan from their most recent report that was released just one day after Sen. Rand Paul´s filibuster on Wednesday. Since last October, Air Force Central Command had provided statistics on the number of weapons released from Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. As the debate on drone use heats up in the heartland, the Air Force report released on March 7 failed to list airstrikes from drones and many believe it´s no coincidence given the Obama administration´s embarrassment after Sen. Paul took the president to task

It is perhaps America’s most unsafe airport. Despite being the launching point for one of the planes hijacked on 9/11 — Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania — Newark Airport has had numerous security violations since. The latest: a fake bomb that made it past Transportation Security Administration officers. Here, a Newark TSA screener who recently left the agency tells how silly policies and lazy workers do little to stop real threats: A LOT of what we do is make-believe.

Our priority of course was avoiding Iraqi civilian casualties but we were bombing office buildings in the wee hours of the morning. It was a 38-hour-long flight from Missouri and back again, with five mid-air refuels. As we were flying over Iraq towards Baghdad, we could see the precision strikes by the Navy’s Tomahawk missiles, but otherwise the night sky was very quiet and I could see the outlines

With no authority to do so and with flawed factual support, the EEOC has issued an enforcement guideline that would compel employers to discriminate in favor of minority ex-cons. It´s past time for Congress to rein in the EEOC and make them withdraw this directive by other name. (a) The EEOC Enforcement Guidance Procedure Over 89 million Americans are presently out of the labor force. The New York Times seems to offer a muddled explanation for the fact that employers have money to hire but aren´t doing so even when they need extra help.

CINCINNATI – An Ohio man who was exonerated after spending 13 years in prison for murder cried as a federal jury found that two Cleveland police detectives violated his civil rights by coercing and falsifying testimony and withholding evidence that pointed to his innocence. The jury´s verdict on Friday, which included awarding $13.2 million to David Ayers of Cleveland for his pain and suffering, brings an end to the legal battle he´s been fighting since his arrest in the 1999 killing of 76-year-old Dorothy Brown. Ayers, 56, was released from prison in 2011 after the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals

If there is any organization that should find it easy to cut 2.4 percent of its budget, you’d think it would be one that spends other people’s money. In our new, perpetually lackluster European-style economy the poor and working class have certainly cinched their belts to the point of cutting off circulation below the waist, judging by the “total disaster” of slumping sales at Wal-Mart this year. And yet the federal government, which has doubled nominal spending since the end of the Clinton years, shrieks that the 2.4 percent budget cut known as sequestration will create agony.

Move over Kim Kardashian, your crown as queen of reality TV has been stolen by rednecks. And not just one redneck, but many of them. Hollywood can´t get enough redneck culture. Why? Because shows about rednecks are making Hollywood a lot of money. The most popular reality shows on cable no longer star "beautiful people" like the Kardashians or "The Real Housewives." Nope. Now that title is held by the likes of the men from A&E´s "Duck Dynasty," who make duck calls for hunters and look like a ZZ Top cover band. Also sharing that crown is 7-year-old Alana Thompson,

It is all well and good for the president to schmooze with Republican senators. Each side might become better informed and more respectful of the other’s point of view as a result, and I hope something good comes of it. But this Insider says the man to watch is Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). Ryan is ambitious and he is a thought-leader. He wants to be in a position where he can run for president in 2016, and he understands the budget better than anyone in the Republican ranks. Ryan won’t be fooled on substance and he won’t negotiate a deal

A coalition of Ratzingerians and Italians have apparently lined up some 40 votes for Cardinal Scola, and the Curia are fighting back with Cardinal Scherer. If there’s white smoke after the first few ballots — i.e., on Wednesday — that’s probably a sign that Scola’s backers have turned it into a straight-up two-man race, and that most cardinals have decided to back Scola against the Curia. But if the conclave goes into a second full day, and balloting continues on Thursday, that will mean Scola has faltered, and the cardinals are looking to a compromise choice.

While the lawsuit over the sale of Al Gore’s Current TV to Al Jazeera is making headlines, a close reading of the legal complaint provides additional evidence that a congressional investigation into the curious transaction is urgently needed and necessary. The media executive who claims to have arranged the sale says the idea was to make the Terror TV channel “palatable to U.S. lawmakers,” a formulation that suggests foreign lobbying on Capitol Hill in order to protect the $500 million payoff to Gore and other owners and investors in Current TV. The suit says that media executive John Terenzio

Perhaps no American will mourn Hugo Chavez more than Joe Kennedy. For years, the eldest son of the late Robert F. Kennedy has relied on the Venezuelan strongman to prop up his charity with tens of millions of dollars in donated oil. The steady flow of heating oil allowed the former congressman from Massachusetts to portray himself — and Chavez — as heroes to the poor even as Kennedy and his wife pull down more than $1 million in salary and benefits from a web of for-profit and nonprofit energy concerns. In cloying TV ads, Kennedy said “only [Venezuelan oil giant] Citgo,

President Obama’s outreach to congressional Republicans isn’t a minor tactical shift. It’s a course correction. Five days after denouncing Republicans as tools of “the well-off and well-connected,” he had dinner at the swanky Jefferson Hotel in Washington with a dozen GOP senators. Not only had Obama invited them, but he paid the bill. The next day, he hosted Paul Ryan, the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee, for lunch at the White House. Obama doesn’t go out of his way to socialize with Republicans. He avoids them. So why would he engage them so vigorously now? Simple.

THE Senate confirmed John O. Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency on Thursday after a nearly 13-hour filibuster by the libertarian senator Rand Paul, who before the vote received a somewhat odd letter from the attorney general. “It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: ‘Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?’ ” the attorney general, Eric H. Holder Jr., wrote to Mr. Paul. “The answer to that question is no.” The senator, whose filibuster

For the past week Washington has found itself debating Bob Woodward. The occasion: his very public argument with White House senior official Gene Sperling, in which Woodward left the impression that Sperling had somehow tried to intimidate him—only to see this accusation undermined by the release of an email exchange in which the pair sounded rather conciliatory.Almost all the commentary about this flap fits neatly under the heading, “What the Hell Happened to Bob Woodward?” But posing that question, as New York magazine did last week, implies a transformation that never occurred.
