$lick Kennedy is oil broken up
New York Post, by Isabel Vincent & Melissa Klein    Original Article

Perhaps no American will mourn Hugo Chavez more than Joe Kennedy. For years, the eldest son of the late Robert F. Kennedy has relied on the Venezuelan strongman to prop up his charity with tens of millions of dollars in donated oil. The steady flow of heating oil allowed the former congressman from Massachusetts to portray himself — and Chavez — as heroes to the poor even as Kennedy and his wife pull down more than $1 million in salary and benefits from a web of for-profit and nonprofit energy concerns. In cloying TV ads, Kennedy said “only [Venezuelan oil giant] Citgo,

President Obama’s outreach to congressional Republicans isn’t a minor tactical shift. It’s a course correction. Five days after denouncing Republicans as tools of “the well-off and well-connected,” he had dinner at the swanky Jefferson Hotel in Washington with a dozen GOP senators. Not only had Obama invited them, but he paid the bill. The next day, he hosted Paul Ryan, the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee, for lunch at the White House. Obama doesn’t go out of his way to socialize with Republicans. He avoids them. So why would he engage them so vigorously now? Simple.

The Drone Question

THE Senate confirmed John O. Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency on Thursday after a nearly 13-hour filibuster by the libertarian senator Rand Paul, who before the vote received a somewhat odd letter from the attorney general. “It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: ‘Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?’ ” the attorney general, Eric H. Holder Jr., wrote to Mr. Paul. “The answer to that question is no.” The senator, whose filibuster

Bob Woodward´s Dark Days

For the past week Washington has found itself debating Bob Woodward. The occasion: his very public argument with White House senior official Gene Sperling, in which Woodward left the impression that Sperling had somehow tried to intimidate him—only to see this accusation undermined by the release of an email exchange in which the pair sounded rather conciliatory.Almost all the commentary about this flap fits neatly under the heading, “What the Hell Happened to Bob Woodward?” But posing that question, as New York magazine did last week, implies a transformation that never occurred.

Ethanol regs push us

Filed under the “we hate when we turn out to be right” category, domestic energy producers are facing some tough choices in the coming months thanks for a one – two punch of ethanol and government regulations. A combination of the drought this summer wiping out a fair portion of the corn crop and an unfunded mandate scheme by the federal government have resulted in there not being enough affordable ethanol for producers to blend into E-10 fuel. When producers can’t meet the minimum amount of “renewables” required by Uncle Sam, they have the choice of using RINs

The Professor, the Bikini Model

In November 2011, Paul Frampton, a theoretical particle physicist, met Denise Milani, a Czech bikini model, on the online dating site Mate1.com. She was gorgeous — dark-haired and dark-eyed, with a supposedly natural DDD breast size. In some photos, she looked tauntingly steamy; in others, she offered a warm smile. Soon, Frampton and Milani were chatting online nearly every day. Frampton would return home from campus — he’d been a professor in the physics and astronomy department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 30 years — and his computer would buzz. “Are you there, honey?”

NARAHA, Japan -- Two years after the triple calamities of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster ravaged Japan´s northeastern Pacific coast, debris containing asbestos, lead, PCBs - and perhaps most worrying - radioactive waste due to the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant looms as a threat for the region. So far, disposal of debris from the disasters is turning out to have been anything but clean. Workers often lacking property oversight, training or proper equipment have dumped contaminated waste with scant regard for regulations or safety, as organized crime has infiltrated the cleanup process.

Charles Krauthammer credited President Obama’s charm offensive toward Republicans to his losing the news media which couldn’t any longer abide his ridiculous sequester “cut” exaggerations. “Obama’s strongest constituency, which is not the left, it’s the mainstream media, could no longer cover for him without being entirely embarrassed,” Krauthammer observed Friday night on FNC, “It had to expose the one exaggeration after another on the sequester.” (Snip) The only thing that truly changed is that his numbers have gone down from the mid to high 50s into the 40s.

WASHINGTON – President Obama served up a steady course of one-liners at the Gridiron Club dinner Saturday night, a storied song-and-joke fest attended by Washington’s political power brokers and the journalists who cover them, providing a timely stage for the White House´s new charm offensive. “Because of ´sequester,´ they cut my tails," quipped Obama, the headline guest at the 128th annual event, a white-tie affair that pokes fun at official Washington. "There is one thing in Washington that didn’t get cut: The length of this dinner. Yet more proof that the sequester makes no sense.”

The much talked-about schism in the Republican Party is better defined as a schism between the lovers of liberty and the lovers of power. But let’s be more specific: This schism is really a love triangle as the libertarians and authoritarians vie for the affections of the American people. It’s nothing new, a spat as old as the political feud between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, but it made for headlines last week when Sen. Rand Paul thumbed his nose at his Republican handlers and went directly to the American people with a real live filibuster on the floor of the Senate.

President Obama is meeting the press tonight in Washington, D.C. He´ll be having dinner tonight at the Gridiron Club, an organization of journalists, at a downtown hotel. But only one print pool reporter will be allowed to cover the event, which is supposed to be humorous and in good fun. And a camera crew was once again not allowed to cover the event. Here´s the first print pool report of the evening: The motorcade departed from the South Lawn at 6:51 p.m. and arrived at the Renaissance Washington Hotel four minutes later. There were no sightings of the president, who is speaking at

The Schumer/Rubio amnesty bill was supposed to have been introduced by now. It was supposed to be at the beginning of March, then was pushed to mid-March, now early April. The problem is not Jeb Bush’s flip-flop-flip on citizenship for illegal aliens, as hilariously embarrassing as that was for the Smarter Bush Brother. Rather, the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce can’t agree on a guestworker program. A massive new program to import indentured low-wage manual laborers from abroad is the only real reason the Chamber has any interest in the immigration bill.

Anything involving junior Texas Senator Ted Cruz is likely to invoke some level of toxic response from Senator John McCain of Arizona and his secondary outlet of public communication, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. That Senator McCain harbors a grudge against “the Bushies” for the South Carolina primary defeat that ended his presidential run in 2000 is the worst kept secret in Washington. Having “his” candidate lose in his home state was also a blow to Graham. Known for his long memory, some Senate staffers joke the “R” behind McCain’s name is for “revenge.”

Newt Gingrich had stern words for John McCain about the senator’s criticism of Rand Paul’s filibuster over drone policy this week. “I’m really disappointed in John McCain, and I’m very saddened by it,” the former House speaker told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday. Gingrich found it surprising that McCain, who has taken on the GOP in the past, “was now lecturing the next generation because they have the guts to stand up” to the party. “I would’ve thought John McCain would’ve applauded him. Scientists have discovered that a wide, gentle river once flowed across the frozen wastes of Antarctica. Before the continent was hidden under two-mile thick ice 34 million years ago, the land was relatively flat, according to a new study. The 3-D map of Antarctica today shows how it looked when the earth was warmer with deep valleys and mountains carved by glaciers. Trapped beneath the ice of Lambert Graben in East Antarctica--home to the world´s biggest glacier--is a deep gorge, reported NBC News. Scientists have always been puzzled when it was carved and how it got so steep.

DENVER | Colorado Democrats rammed most of their gun-control package through the state Senate late Friday, but yanked two bills after a furious backlash over the concerns of rape victims. Senate Democrats gave initial approval to five bills, including legislation to extend background checks to private sales, limit ammunition magazine and shotgun capacity, and compel domestic-violence offenders to relinquish their guns. But with the clock nearing midnight and a blizzard looming, Democrats agreed to drop two of the more controversial measures: a bill to create legal liability for

‘Slaughtered in the USA’: Labeling

A meat industry already imperiled by federal budget cuts is lashing back at the Obama administration following the release of new proposed labeling regulations seen as costly and unnecessarily onerous. The new regulations, to be published Monday for public consideration, are meant to resolve last year’s finding by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that U.S. rules give American meat products an unfair advantage over those from Canada and Mexico. If the WTO violation is not remedied by May 23, America’s top two meat-trading partners could impose damaging sanctions in the form of tariffs against U.S. meat producers and packers.

In his weekly radio appearance on John Gambling’s radio show, the mayor was asked whether he would consider ordering mandatory gym memberships and he admitted that’s taking things too far. “Well, you have to be practical about what legally you can do and what people will do,” said Mr. Bloomberg. “The nice thing about the soda thing is it’s really

Tapping Rice would likely to prompt an angry Republican backlash in Congress. Rice was widely reported to be the Obama’s first choice for secretary of State, but withdrew her name after encountering strong Republican opposition led by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)
