Obama Meets the Press—for Dinner
Weekly Standard, by Daniel Halper    Original Article

President Obama is meeting the press tonight in Washington, D.C. He´ll be having dinner tonight at the Gridiron Club, an organization of journalists, at a downtown hotel. But only one print pool reporter will be allowed to cover the event, which is supposed to be humorous and in good fun. And a camera crew was once again not allowed to cover the event. Here´s the first print pool report of the evening: The motorcade departed from the South Lawn at 6:51 p.m. and arrived at the Renaissance Washington Hotel four minutes later. There were no sightings of the president, who is speaking at

Trouble in Amnesty Paradise

The Schumer/Rubio amnesty bill was supposed to have been introduced by now. It was supposed to be at the beginning of March, then was pushed to mid-March, now early April. The problem is not Jeb Bush’s flip-flop-flip on citizenship for illegal aliens, as hilariously embarrassing as that was for the Smarter Bush Brother. Rather, the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce can’t agree on a guestworker program. A massive new program to import indentured low-wage manual laborers from abroad is the only real reason the Chamber has any interest in the immigration bill.

The Real Reason McCain-
Graham Attacked Ted Cruz

Anything involving junior Texas Senator Ted Cruz is likely to invoke some level of toxic response from Senator John McCain of Arizona and his secondary outlet of public communication, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. That Senator McCain harbors a grudge against “the Bushies” for the South Carolina primary defeat that ended his presidential run in 2000 is the worst kept secret in Washington. Having “his” candidate lose in his home state was also a blow to Graham. Known for his long memory, some Senate staffers joke the “R” behind McCain’s name is for “revenge.”

Newt Gingrich had stern words for John McCain about the senator’s criticism of Rand Paul’s filibuster over drone policy this week. “I’m really disappointed in John McCain, and I’m very saddened by it,” the former House speaker told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday. Gingrich found it surprising that McCain, who has taken on the GOP in the past, “was now lecturing the next generation because they have the guts to stand up” to the party. “I would’ve thought John McCain would’ve applauded him. He would’ve said, ‘I may not agree with you in detail,

The front page of Saturday´s Washington Post took the publicity stunt of shutting down White House tours and spun it as an educational event. The headline was “In canceled White House tours, a civics lesson: Disappointed tourists help administration show sequester’s pain.” Inside the paper, the headline was “Worthless tickets drive home government’s dysfunction.” Ahem, the tickets are free even when they are honored. The online headline was even worse: "With canceled tours, White House teaching how democracy works." Reporter David Nakamura blamed not Obama but the

Scientists have discovered that a wide, gentle river once flowed across the frozen wastes of Antarctica. Before the continent was hidden under two-mile thick ice 34 million years ago, the land was relatively flat, according to a new study. The 3-D map of Antarctica today shows how it looked when the earth was warmer with deep valleys and mountains carved by glaciers. Trapped beneath the ice of Lambert Graben in East Antarctica--home to the world´s biggest glacier--is a deep gorge, reported NBC News. Scientists have always been puzzled when it was carved and how it got so steep.

But now I can reveal the Skyfall singer has landed the biggest gig of next year – singing for Michelle Obama during her 50th birthday party at the White House. The 24-year-old star will join Beyonce at the bash on January 17 – proof she has been given the ultimate seal of approval in the US. ‘America’s First Lady will be holding a huge celebrity-packed party for her birthday at the White House next year and, as she adores Adele and Beyonce, she has asked them both to sing,’ says a source.

DENVER | Colorado Democrats rammed most of their gun-control package through the state Senate late Friday, but yanked two bills after a furious backlash over the concerns of rape victims. Senate Democrats gave initial approval to five bills, including legislation to extend background checks to private sales, limit ammunition magazine and shotgun capacity, and compel domestic-violence offenders to relinquish their guns. But with the clock nearing midnight and a blizzard looming, Democrats agreed to drop two of the more controversial measures: a bill to create legal liability for

‘Slaughtered in the USA’: Labeling

A meat industry already imperiled by federal budget cuts is lashing back at the Obama administration following the release of new proposed labeling regulations seen as costly and unnecessarily onerous. The new regulations, to be published Monday for public consideration, are meant to resolve last year’s finding by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that U.S. rules give American meat products an unfair advantage over those from Canada and Mexico. If the WTO violation is not remedied by May 23, America’s top two meat-trading partners could impose damaging sanctions in the form of tariffs against U.S. meat producers and packers.

What a relief. The thought of seeing Bloomberg in exercise clothing was giving me a sour stomach. Mayor Michael Bloomberg may be one of the world’s biggest proponents of government action to promote public health, but Hizzoner has his limits. In his weekly radio appearance on John Gambling’s radio show, the mayor was asked whether he would consider ordering mandatory gym memberships and he admitted that’s taking things too far. “Well, you have to be practical about what legally you can do and what people will do,” said Mr. Bloomberg. “The nice thing about the soda thing is it’s really

The administration wanted to release a “larger sum,” but bowed to the wishes of Royce´s committee as well as congressional appropriators, he said. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice is rumored to be President Obama’s first choice to succeed Thomas Donilon as national security advisor. The Washington Post, citing an administration official familiar with the president’s thinking, reported Saturday that Rice “has emerged as far and away the front-runner." Tapping Rice would likely to prompt an angry Republican backlash in Congress. Rice was widely reported to be the Obama’s first choice for secretary of State, but withdrew her name after encountering strong Republican opposition led by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

A comet that just made its way into the Northern Hemisphere evening sky should be at its brightest this weekend, but it may be tricky for stargazers to see. On Sunday (March 10), the Comet Pan-STARRS is expected to make its closest approach to the sun, potentially making the comet shine even more brilliantly when it appears at twilight low in the western sky, weather permitting. But stargazers will need a bit of preparation (not to mention a clear sky) to see the comet. "There is a catch to viewing Comet Pan-STARRS," Amy Mainzer, the principal investigator of NASA´s

Kabul, Afghanistan - A bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives struck outside the Afghan Defense Ministry on Saturday, killing at least 10 people in a blast just hours after Chuck Hagel, the new United States defense secretary, arrived here. And a short time later, another bomber detonated his explosives in eastern Afghanistan before reaching what appeared to be his target, a joint Afghan-American military checkpoint. He killed eight children and a policeman, according to Afghan military and hospital officials. Although Mr. Hagel was not at the site of either blast,

Doral, Fla. — Tiger Woods hit a tee shot that got stuck in a palm tree. That´s about the only thing that went wrong for him Saturday in the Cadillac Championship. Woods made seven more birdies on the Blue Monster, the last one from 15 feet on the 18th hole for a 5-under 67. That gave him a four-shot lead over Graeme McDowell, and put Woods in great position to win a World Golf Championship for the first time since 2009. McDowell was six shots behind with three holes to play when he chipped in for eagle on the 16th and closed with a two-putt par from 85 feet. Woods has a 39-2 record when

One stove will be used for the burning of ballot papers after cardinals cast their votes, while the other will be used to emit emit coloured smoke - black to signify that the cardinals

He is fed up with people criticising him for trying to cash in on his younger half-brother’s famous name. ‘It’s also my name and my birthright. Let’s not forget that I was born before him,’ he says. Barack may have made history as the first black President of the United States, but he is not, Malik suggests, the only member of the family destined for greatness. For it was drummed into Malik, from a very early age, that he was special and

No one lives forever — nor do they last forever. At least not without a lot of tuneups. As much as it may seem like the bodies of famous world leaders such as Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Mao Zedong have been preserved for all eternity, their enduring physical presence is simply an illusion aided by science. Only the Venezuelan officials who have promised to preserve Hugo Chavez and display his body "for eternity" inside a glass tomb know exactly how they´re going to do it. But if they were to follow procedures that are used in the United States, the technique might be rather simple: repeat embalming.

Q. You have been offered a job in another part of the country. How do you determine whether it makes sense to embark on such a major life change? A. Obviously, pay is one of the most important factors when deciding whether to move. Ideally, your new salary should allow you to maintain your current lifestyle in the new area. Create a chart that compares the cost of living and real estate prices in your current city with those of the new one, says Brenda Harrington, president of Adaptive Leadership Strategies, a coaching firm in Reston, Va., that specializes in mobility and relocation.
