Dan Baum is not your typical gun guy. He has a lifelong love of firearms he can trace back to the age of five. But he´s also a Jewish Democrat and a former staff writer for The New Yorker and feels like a misfit next to most gun owners, who identify overwhelmingly on the conservative side of the spectrum. In order to bridge this gap, Baum set off on a cross-country journey, chatting with everyone from a gun store owner in Louisville to a wild boar hunter in Texas to a Hollywood armorer.

Venezuela’s long, weepy goodbye to Hugo Chavez carried on Thursday as foreign heads of state — and even a delegation sent by the Obama administration — made their way to Caracas in advance of Friday’s funeral. Venezuelan authorities have not said when Chavez will be laid to rest, nor exactly where. It was just one of many uncertainties facing the country after Chavez succumbed to a long battle with cancer Tuesday at age 58, after 14 years in power. In what appeared to be a conciliatory gesture, U.S. officials said a delegation of congressional members and State Department

Why was that so hard? Only after Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky rallied public support against President Obama did the White House answer a simple and constitutionally critical question: “Does the president have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on an American soil?” Attorney General Eric Holder wrote a two-sentence letter to Paul on Thursday, saying the answer is no. White House spokesman Jay Carney added that “if the United States were under attack, there were an imminent threat,” the president has the authority

Under Italian law, the 76-year-old media billionaire would not have to serve any jail time until the appeals process has been exhausted, and a higher court could overturn the ruling.

Could things get any worse for J.C. Penney (JCP)? Nearly every day of the past week has brought fresh news about something going wrong at the struggling retailer. It´s hard to keep track of all the misfires surrounding the company right now. Thursday, news emerged that Penney had laid off 2,200 employees in its stores and corporate offices. The layoffs actually cheered investors up a bit: Penney´s stock price was up more than 2% in afternoon trading. Here´s a list of the setbacks Penney and CEO Ron Johnson have suffered recently: Analysts losing faith. There aren´t many analysts left

A new study claims the beloved nun might not have been as helpful to the poor as she could have been. It´s highly likely that one day, the Catholic Church will officially recognize Mother Teresa as a saint, a position she´s held in the popular imagination for years. A new study in the religious studies journal Religieuses, however, says that the late Mother Teresa´s reputation is mostly hype — a result of a church declining in popularity trying to boost its image. (Snip) Of course, this isn´t news to fans of Christopher Hitchens, the erudite atheist who made it

The Obama administration is postponing an award for an Egyptian activist who was subjected to a "virginity test" after protesting in Cairo´s Tahrir Square. The State Department had said Samira Ibrahim would be among recipients of an International Women of Courage award presented by Secretary of State John Kerry and first lady Michelle Obama on Friday. Now the State Department says she won´t be honored Friday because of anti-American and anti-Semitic comments on her Twitter account. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday officials will first study the tweets, which include support for attacks against U.S. diplomatic

Imagine you´re a waitress, out with friends on a night off, when you lose your wallet. Cash, credit cards, driver´s license—all gone. Your bank later informs you that checks are being issued in your name. It´s a pain, but you carry on. Two weeks later, you´re at work when four people walk in and sit in your section. They start ordering drinks. You ask to see their IDs. A woman in the group hands a driver´s license to you. You look down, and it´s yours.

Washington - An investigation of a battery fire aboard a Boeing 787 shows mechanics and firefighters made repeated, unsuccessful attempts to put out the blaze through smoke so thick they couldn´t see the battery. The documents released Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board paint a more dangerous picture of the Jan. 7 fire than previously portrayed. The Japan Airlines plane had just landed after an overseas flight. It was parked at Boston´s Logan International Airport when a cleaning crew smelled smoke. The 184 passengers had departed the plane six minutes earlier,

Republicans don’t control the U.S. Senate and they don’t have the presidency. Instead of wasting time and energy in doomed efforts to defeat President Obama’s Cabinet nominees or sucking up to illegal aliens, why not focus on issues where Republicans can be off-the-charts popular while forcing Democrats into taking stupid positions? After the slaughters at Virginia Tech, Aurora, Colo., Tucson, Ariz., and Newtown, Conn., every sentient person knows we need to do something about institutionalizing the mentally ill and — at the very least — keeping guns out of their hands.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and other liberals in Congress are ratcheting up pressure on President Obama to back away from a proposal to curb the growth of Social Security benefits. Sanders and other liberals are concerned Obama may strike a deficit-reduction deal with Republicans that would reduce Social Security benefits by adopting a less generous way of adjusting benefits for inflation. Obama has previously said he would consider using a formula known as chain-Consumer Price Index that would lower the growth of entitlements by slowing benefit increases for inflation.

Paul on Wednesday managed a nearly 13-hour filibuster against President Obama´s nominee for CIA director, John Brennan, in protest of the administration´s refusal to rule out domestic drone strikes against U.S. citizens. Pelosi said she was well aware of the spectacle, but she wasn´t enticed enough to watch. "There are certain things that fall into the category of, ´Life is too short,´

President Obama has reversed course to adopt a Leadership 101 tactic that he and his advisers ruthlessly mocked: Get to know the opposition. The president extended a rare invitation Wednesday night for Republican lawmakers to join him for dinner at a restaurant near the White House. He will be eating lunch Thursday with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. And next week, at his request, Obama will go to Capitol Hill to meet separately with both parties in the House and Senate. Traveling to Congress is a modest act of humility for a president who has told officials privately
