WASHINGTON — The nonprofit advocacy group formed to bolster President Obama’s agenda has reversed its decision to accept corporate donations and promised more transparency about its contributors after fielding a torrent of criticism about its fundraising structure. (Snip)The new policies announced by Messina were aimed at squelching the attacks. The organization, which already said it would decline donations from federal lobbyists and foreign donors, will now also refuse money from corporations. However, the group will still accept money from labor unions, according to spokeswoman Katie Hogan.

A controversial dark money group recently created to promote Democratic policies and officials has refused to disclose the location of a secretive donor meeting it will hold in Washington, D.C., next week. Organizing for Action (OFA), a 501(c)(4) advocacy group created by President Barack Obama’s former campaign manager, will hold an event called the “founders summit” in a Washington hotel on Wednesday, March 13, according to an NPR report.

President Obama has reversed course to adopt a Leadership 101 tactic that he and his advisers ruthlessly mocked: Get to know the opposition. The president extended a rare invitation Wednesday night for Republican lawmakers to join him for dinner at a restaurant near the White House. He will be eating lunch Thursday with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. And next week, at his request, Obama will go to Capitol Hill to meet separately with both parties in the House and Senate. Traveling to Congress is a modest act of humility for a president who has told officials privately

For much of the last four decades, the Alabama Education Association has risen to become one of the most powerful teachers’ unions in the country. As odd as it may seem in a dark red state, over the years long-time AEA executive director Paul Hubbert, oftentimes described as the “shadow governor” of Alabama, has earned his union the distinction of being one of the most politically involved organizations of its type in the country. Hubbert and the AEA won one of their first major battles in 1971

Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) criticized Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) argument that President Obama could use a drone attack against innocent U.S. citizens on American soil, as “simply ridiculous.” “To infer that the president is going to kill someone like Jane Fonda or someone who disagrees with him is simply ridiculous,” McCain said on the floor Thursday. “If someone is an enemy combatant that enemy combatant has no where to hid, not even in a café.” McCain was referring comments Paul made during his more than 12 hour talking filibuster on Wednesday.

The expansion of prescription drug coverage under President Obama’s sweeping healthcare law has led to a glut of “perverse” state and federal regulations that will increase the cost of medication, according to a new study. The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), a conservative-leaning think tank, argues that Americans, who on average fill a dozen prescriptions a year, would benefit from free competition. “Drug coverage is expanding rapidly and heightened regulatory scrutiny will prevent drug plans managers from holding down costs for consumers with programs such as creating exclusive networks and encouraging mail-order

The Romeike family fled their German homeland in 2008 seeking political asylum in the United States – where they hoped to home school their children. Instead, the Obama administration wants the evangelical Christian family deported. The fate of Uwe and Hannelore Romeike – along with their six children – now rests with the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2010 an immigration judge granted the family political refuge, but the Dept. of Homeland Security objected and argued they don’t deserve asylum. Neither the Justice Dept. nor the Dept. of Homeland Security returned calls seeking comment.

Gay rights activists are demanding Tim Tebow back out of a speaking engagement at Liberty University just two weeks after pressuring the New York Jets quarterback to cancel a speaking engagement at the First Baptist Church of Dallas. Tebow is expected to speak this weekend at Wildfire – a men’s conference hosted by the conservative Christian university. His remarks will be closed to the general public. The professional football player is well-known for sharing his faith in Christ – but in recent weeks he’s come under fire from the national media and gay rights activists for speaking in churches

Rand Paul responded this morning to Sen. Lindsey Graham’s comment that Paul’s filibuster of CIA nominee John Brennan’s confirmation was “ridiculous.” Graham said yesterday, “The drone program he [Obama] has utilized overseas, I think has made us safer. This idea that we’re going to use a drone to attack an American citizen in a cafe in America is ridiculous, and I think the American people need to understand the threat we face.” On Glenn Beck’s radio show today, Rand replied, “I agree it’s ridiculous, but then why didn’t the president say he won’t?”

Actress and singer Jessica Simpson made a comment Wednesday that is so preposterous in the year 2013 – especially from a woman that is estimated to be worth $100 million! – that it completely defies reason. Appearing on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the once again pregnant Simpson said, “I keep planning on getting married but I keep getting knocked up.” “It’s just one of those things,” she continued as Kimmel laughed. “Maybe I should go back to when I was younger. I was a virgin before I was married. So maybe I should just completely

Rand Paul R-Ky continued his filibuster on the Senate floor. Toomey and Johnson, however, joined their colleagues in the Senate afterwards at around 11:00 p.m. Toomey also spoke on the floor with Rand Paul earlier in the day. According to the White House, the President and the Senators dined at the Jefferson Hotel but reportedly did not discuss Paul’s filibuster. “A number of Republican Senators joined the president and

Speaking on behalf of the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research, a Disney Company shareholder, Justin Danhof cited Brian Ross´s coverage of the Aurora theater shooting and Rob Parker´s remarks about Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III as evidence that Disney was responsible for liberal bias.

Turkish press is reporting that Central Intelligence Agents seized Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law and brought him to the United States, after he was deported to Jordan. Agence France-Presse, citing Turkey media reports, says Abu Ghaith — bin Laden’s son-in-law and a former al Qaeda spokesman — was grabbed at a luxury hotel in Ankara last month after a tip from CIA agents. Local police then held him at the hotel, over the objections of U.S. authorities, who requested that he be immediately extradited to America, AFP reports. Turkish officials — at the same time

In all the noise caused by the Obama administration´s direct assault on the right of every person to keep and bear arms, the essence of the issue has been drowned out. The president and his big-government colleagues want you to believe that only the government can keep you free and safe, so to them, the essence of this debate is about obedience to law. To those who have killed innocents among us, obedience to law is the last of their thoughts. And to those who believe that the Constitution means what it says

With various sources confirming a number of Benghazi survivors are "still recovering at Walter Reed military hospital," Republican lawmakers are demanding their names and access to them. To date, Sec. of State of John Kerry has visited with one survivor, but will not give the survivor´s name. He will only say the survivor was "remarkably courageous." Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Frank Wolf (R-VA), and Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.), have trying to gain access to survivors, but all say they have been told different things regarding both the number of survivors and their locations.

It´s no secret the United States has an unemployment problem. The government issues a detailed report each month that estimates the number of people who are either unemployed or underemployed and looking for work. The persistently high numbers — especially for young people and minorities — tell a very sad story for the individuals, their families and the country, as well. But there´s an even more portentous unemployment story unfolding today that receives almost no attention at all. And its consequences may spell even greater doom for the friends, families and taxpayers it victimizes. I´m referring to the millions of Americans whom

The Hatfields and McCoys ain’t got nothin’ on The Judds. The celebrity family’s famous feuds are threatening to hamper Ashley Judd’s political career in Kentucky even before it starts. “She [Ashley] is not as smart as she acts,” her mother Naomi Judd volunteered to Piers Morgan in January. Ashley is just another “Hollywood liberal,” complained her grandmother to The Associated Press in December 2012, adding she would vote for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell before her own kin. With relatives like these, who needs Karl Rove’s American Crossroads? The political action committee is already using

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has always been interested in real estate. The billionaire media tycoon owns—as The Weekly Standard goes to press—11 homes, including his primary residence, a 12,500-square-foot townhouse on East 79th Street. (He’s the only New York mayor who’s completely shunned the city’s official residence, Gracie Mansion, where mayors have lived since 1942.) So Bloomberg may simply have been acting on his lifelong passion for property when his administration announced a Request for Proposals last summer for architectural firms and developers to design a building of so-called micro-apartments, with units measuring

GAZIANTEP, Turkey — A Syrian rebel group that once claimed it had abducted a group of U.N. observers in the Golan Heights announced Thursday that it had in fact rescued them from fighting in the area and called on the United Nations to send a security convoy to pick them up. The announcement by the Yarmouk Martyrs’ Brigade was posted on the same Facebook page that was used to publicize the abduction Wednesday. A video in which the kidnappers warned that the observers would not be released until Syrian President Bashar al-Assad withdrew troops

After nearly 13 hours of the first real filibuster in many years, Rand Paul yielded the floor of the U.S. Senate last night shortly before 1 a.m. to tumultuous applause. I don’t share the Kentucky senator’s concerns about the “perpetual war” that al-Qaeda is waging against the West or the use of drones in that conflict. Nor do I believe that the rule of law is at risk in the unwillingness of the attorney general to rule out a hypothetical instance when it might be prudent to use a drone against a U.S. citizen on American soil–though it is difficult

Tessa was so severely allergic to milk, wheat, eggs, nuts, shellfish and assorted other foods that as a toddler she went into anaphylactic shock when milk fell on her skin. Kim never left her with a baby sitter. She slept with her each night. And when she needed to work, she found a job she could do primarily from home in the evenings. In his latest misstep, Attorney General Eric Holder is refusing to rule out the possibility of using armed drones against American citizens within the United States. According to a letter he sent to Senator Rand Paul, as Charles C. W. Cooke noted, Holder said that the use of lethal force would be “entirely hypothetical, unlikely to occur, and one we hope no president will ever have to confront,” but might be necessary to stop a “catastrophic attack” like the December 7, 1941, or September 11, 2001, attacks on the homeland. Holder may have the right idea, but because

Sen. Rand Paul´s filibuster against the confirmation of CIA Director and "drone czar" John Brennan offers a "teachable moment" to the media and the left about the Tea Party. As they seethe in outrage and confusion that it took a Republican to question the constitutionality of drone attacks, it is important to remind our friends on the other side that it wasn´t just any Republican, but a--gasp!--Tea Party Republican who spoke "truth to power." Not only that, but the Senators who were first to offer their assistance were also Tea Party Republicans--the so-called McCarthyist
