Al Gore Sued Over Current
TV Sale To Al Jazeera

Al Gore already invited criticism by selling Current TV to Al Jazeera — and now the deal has landed him with a lawsuit. John Terenzio, the man bringing the suit, claimed the deal was his idea, and now he’s been stiffed. Terenzio, according to the Hollywood Reporter, “presents himself as a highly regarded media consultant, executive and TV producer who conceived the idea for the distribution of an American version of Al Jazeera.” Gore, he said, originally opposed selling Current to oil-funded Al Jazeera, but had “a change of heart.”

George W. Bush wins the 2000 Presidential Election by (in essence) 537 votes; Fox News goes to #1 in the cable news race a few months later. Bush narrowly beats John Kerry in 2004. Not surprisingly, Fox is still #1, and by a wider margin. Barack Obama soundly defeats John McCain in 2008; Fox is still #1 by a Secretariat-esque margin. Mr. Obama decisively beats Mitt Romney four months ago; Regardless of which party holds executive power, Fox is still decimating the competition, albeit by a slightly smaller-than-usual margin. If it wasn’t bizarre enough to hear Shakespeare, Patton, Jay-Z and Wiz Khalifa quoted on the Senate floor this morning, Sen. Rand Paul’s nearly 13-hour old-school filibuster on drone warfare exposed this jarring irony: A constitutional scholar who rode his anti-war views to the White House stands defiantly to the right of the GOP -- and probably on the wrong side of history. What’s up with President Obama? Paul waged the rhetorical marathon to temporarily block the confirmation of Obama’s nominee to head the CIA, John Brennan, after receiving a letter this month from Attorney General Eric Holder

With each passing day of President Obama´s second term he continues to consolidate power and undermine any notion of conventional democratic governing norms. (snip)In Obama´s first term, his administration proudly touted its terrorist kill list as a means of keeping the country safe. And while many were angered about the use of drones to kill enemies abroad, no one considered the possibility that such tactics would be used here at home.

Scenes of mass grief and hysteria have accompanied the deaths of many dictators, from the Soviet Union’s Josef Stalin in 1953 to North Korea’s Kim Jong-Il in 2011.[Snip] The Venezuelan people have been whipped into hysteria by the propaganda of the sinister--and aggressively anti-American--political machine Chavez left behind as his legacy. His designated successor Nicolas Maduro claimed risibly that Venezuela’s President was murdered by the CIA with ‘a technology for inducing cancer’ even as he choked back tears and paid his tributes to a glorious leader. The truth is that Chavez was a brutal despot who strutted

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday vowed to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States, amplifying its threatening rhetoric hours ahead of a vote by U.N. diplomats on whether to level new sanctions against Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test. An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang´s Foreign Ministry said the North will exercise its right for "a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors" because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against the North. The death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has received extra notice in Houston, home base of Citgo, the national oil company of Venezuela. At Citgo Petroleum Corp. headquarters, 1293 Eldridge Parkway, flags on Wednesday were reportedly lowered to half-staff in memory of the South American leader who died Tuesday after battling cancer. Citgo stations are independently owned, so the decisions to lower a flag at a particular station would be up to each owner, a spokeswoman said. The company issued this statement Wednesday by email: "President Hugo Chávez of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela leaves behind

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered to send thousands of soldiers, firefighters and volunteers to help with the cleanup. He also pledged $1 million in aid plus fuel to help rebuild hard-hit cities like New Orleans. The offer, swiftly rejected, was part of a larger pattern: Chavez´s repeated attempts to provide humanitarian relief to low-income and distressed U.S. families. Despite those efforts, he was never able to foster his image as a savior of the American poor like he did in Venezuela. More often, he was accused of orchestrating

Readers who know of my personal history will understand my accounting for what I experienced during my month-long 2006 stay in Venezuela. Realizing that many may not have heard any of my story previously, an explanation of the circumstances surrounding my trip is in order and will help readers understand the matter. Why I was invited to Venezuela by Chávez’s government, why I traveled there, and why individuals there asked me to meet with a FARC-connected group can only be understood if readers understand the context and circumstances my experiences occurred within.

Disgraced politician John Edwards was recently warned by his doctors that he will die if he doesn´t stop drinking. The former presidential candidate reportedly had a heart attack scare that ended with a serious conversation with his doctors who said that if he didn´t cut back on alcohol he may die. This is not the first bout with heart trouble for 59-year-old Edwards as he had to postpone his corruption trial last year because of an undisclosed yet serious heart condition. The latest run-in was reported in today´s National Enquirer who alleges that he was at home when he started

Ground beef, sprouts and poultry are among the common supermarket purchases that food safety experts avoid, for fear of getting sick themselves. After a report last month from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that one in six Americans suffer from a food-borne illness each year, a group of top industry consultants have opened up about the way they shop for groceries. Raw milk and seafood from South East Asia also came high on the list of produce to avoid, according to the New York Daily News, while one even cautioned against leafy vegetables like lettuce and spinach.

The jobless rate in the eurozone´s second-largest economy increased hit 10.6pc in the final quarter of last year, up from 10.2pc in third quarter, the national statistics institute Insee said. French unemployment has been climbing steadily since the end of 2011 and is now at its highest since 1999. Concerns about high debt amid a slowing global economy have driven up unemployment rates across Europe. While France has avoided the worst of the crisis so far, its high and rising unemployment rate indicates its economy is also in trouble. At the start of the year car maker Renault

At times even a chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court finds it useful, as the saying goes, to put the hay down where the goats can get it. And so it was last week in oral arguments over a big voting-rights case. At issue in Shelby County v. Holder was whether some states in the American South, unlike many states in the North, must still submit any change in voting practices to the Justice Department for approval, as required by one section of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted,

This week the IRS announced that it was finally able to begin accepting all individual income tax returns to process refunds — nearly two months after tax season officially began. Up until now, millions of Americans wanting to claim tax refunds have been stymied by the IRS’s inability to update its computer systems to reflect the new post-fiscal cliff tax law. The bad news for taxpayers is that things will only get worse as the IRS begins to implement most of the provisions of the Obamacare healthcare law. "The most hated woman in America" lives off the kindness of strangers. And quite a few strangers, it seems. Casey Anthony, found not guilty in the 2011 death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, is so hated that she rarely shows her face in public. She came out of seclusion on Monday for the first time since her acquittal, only to admit in a bankruptcy hearing in Tampa that she has no job, no car and little money. "I guess you could say I´m living free off the kindness" of others, Anthony said. Much of that kindness is coming online.

In my earlier post on the Obama White House turf wars that continually impede the administration’s ability to form coherent and thoughtful policy prescriptions, I mentioned Vali Nasr’s piece in Foreign Policy and his evident sympathies for the Hillary Clinton wing of the administration over the Obama wing. If Clinton does indeed run for president in 2016, as many expect her to, stories like these will serve as the building blocks of her campaign: she shared in the administration’s successes, the storyline will go, but the failures only occurred because nobody listened to her. That storyline is bunk,

WASHINGTON -- I do not know about you, but to me this sequestration imbroglio is getting interesting. Last week, I wrote of my surprise that a basic untruth was being repeated over and over again by the White House, to wit, that the Republicans were responsible for the monstrosity of sequestration. I wrote that, as I recalled it, sequestration was an idea introduced by the White House to coax the Republicans and the Democrats into a deal in the summer of 2011 to raise the ceiling on the national debt. Remember that deal?

"Set aside the merits and think about the politics" is the pith of Ramesh Ponnuru´s advice to conservatives at Bloomberg.com a few days ago. In a short article titled: "Do Conservatives Actually Want to Win Elections," Ponnuru examines a few recent instances where conservatives are presumed to eschew the practical in favor of the dogmatic. As to the first -- setting aside the merits and thinking about the politics -- it begs the question: "Why on earth would conservatives divorce merit -- or principle -- from politics?"

Gabriel Gomez, one of three Republicans vying for the US Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, speaks Spanish like a native and seems intent on making sure every voter knows it. The Cohasset businessman, a former Navy SEAL commander, announced his candidacy last month in an online video that opened in Spanish: “Me llamo Gabriel Gomez, y yo estoy anunciando que voy a correr para ser senador de los Estados Unidos.” Then he switched to English: “For those of you who don’t speak Spanish, today I’m announcing my run for US Senate.”

CPAC is another week distant. Speakers announced. Cue the usual controversies. This year’s controversy awards go to the alleged “snubbing” of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie — a speaker last year but not invited this year. Another winner in the controversy department is the decision not to have official participation by a gay group — GOP Proud . (And full disclosure here, last year I was a panelist at CPAC and, alas, cannot attend this year. I will miss it.)

And the would-be MacGyvers among us won’t be rendered defenseless now that they can bring Swiss Army knives and other bladed instruments on board again. You never know when they will come in handy. In episode 134, MacGyver used one to slide down a canvas backdrop. And in episode 45,

Signals Intelligence, or sigint, is the science of interpreting signals sent by enemies of the United States. With his Arabic-language skills, John Brennan ought to be good at interpreting signals.

The photos of the historic suffragette March on Washington on March 3, 1913, that were all over the place over the weekend were a reminder of how far America has come in the last century, and of how much American women have been at the forefront of pushing the international rights of women forward. But as I admired their bonnets and their courage, their side-buttoned boots and hooded woolen cloaks and looks of fierce determination, the women in the 100-year-old images also raised for me some slightly more prosaic questions. Why were some staging tableaux wearing breastplates

As Winter Storm Saturn heads farther east into the Atlantic Ocean, the rain and snow mixture in the Mid-Atlantic States will come to an end Wednesday night. Farther north, a rain and snow mixture changing to all snow will spread into the New York City metro area and southern New England Wednesday evening into early Thursday accompanied by strong, gusty winds.
