Former congressman Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) is mourning the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez today, praising Chavez as someone who made a difference for poor people. Kennedy told the AP that Chavez helped 2 million Americans through a heating assistance program that the two men worked on together through Kennedy’s Citizen’s Energy charity. Kennedy said Chavez donated 200 million gallons of heating oil over eight years.

As the father of two small boys, I’ve seen some tantrums these last few years. They follow a predictable script. • Child wants something • Dad says no (Snip)The government wants something. It wants to spend $3,803,000,000,000. It’s been told that it may only spend $3,759,000,000,000. (Please notice that nine zeroes are left unmolested.) And so now the government is going to throw a tantrum. It will hide its aircraft carrier, stop food-safety inspections, close the White House to tourists who flew in from hundreds or thousands of miles away. In other words,

With $6 trillion down the drain, you might think that wild, drunken spending of other people’s money that we do not have is President Obama’s single greatest talent. Turns out there is something else he is even better at. That would be the hysterical, doom-and-gloom fear mongering we have witnessed these past few weeks over comparatively small cuts to the federal government. [Snip] What is truly astonishing and breathtaking here is that all of this doom and gloom Mr. Obama has predicted is precisely what he wants for this country.

President Barack Obama hopes to spark a pitchfork revolt against Republicans over sequester-induced budget cuts — but many Democrats fret that he’s undermined that effort with an early strategy marred by hype, poor planning and muddled messaging. The stakes in the sequester debate aren’t quite as high as they were during the debt ceiling battle of 2011, but Democratic veterans of the Obama-Republican wars of 2009 and 2010 are getting a creepy sense of déjà vu from a White House messaging shop they believe fumbled the rollouts of the stimulus and health care initiatives.

Libyan officials warned Washington D.C. that an attack on the consulate was imminent days before the attack happened according to the documents the Obama admin turned over to satisfy Senate questions regarding "who changed the talking points" on Benghazi. It is also obvious that Al-Qaeda´s suspected involvement in the Benghazi attack was broadly known from the start. But officials are now contending that references to Al-Qaeda in the talking points were erased in the editing process by press officers from the White House, the DOD, and the FBI. The source said

The same Howard Kurtz who mercilessly ridiculed the idea that Fox News would hire the very successful and charismatic Herman Cain, today published a gushing love letter to the "ubertalented" Keith Olbermann that begged ESPN to re-hire him: I´m going to lead a chant: Let´s Go Keith!! It would be great fun to see him holding forth again on sporting matters. Is the guy supposed to stay sidelined for the rest of his life, just because he´s got a bit of a temper? Don´t the fans of America deserve better? Olbermann is reportedly an absolute nightmare

NEW YORK -- Actress Valerie Harper best known as wise-cracking neighbor Rhoda Morgenstern on television´s "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, People magazine reported on Wednesday. Doctors told Harper, 73, on January 15 that she had as little as three months left to live after a battery of tests revealed she has leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, according to People. The rare condition occurs when cancer cells spread into the fluid-filled membrane surrounding the brain. Harper previously battled lung cancer in 2009 and discussed that challenge in her new memoir "I, Rhoda."

Nothing angers President Obama and his allies more than suggesting that he bears even the minutest responsibility for resolving sequestration and the broader budget fights. He claims to be powerless to overcome a stubbornly antitax Republican Party -- short of executing a "Jedi mind-meld.” Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro doesn’t think it takes a Vulcan to deal with Republicans. Clear and strong leadership at the White House would suffice. “I think he needs to be a leader in the negotiation,” said the freshman House member from Texas who, along with his twin brother,

The snowquester has claimed yet another casualty: Wednesday´s House hearing on global warming. The House Science, Space and Technology Committee announced early Wednesday that it´s postponing its environmental subcommittee´s scheduled 10 a.m. hearing on the state of the science behind climate change. As a reason, it cited "weather." The panel hasn´t announced when the hearing will take place. The session was apparently designed to shore up the knowledge of subcommittee members ahead of expected new carbon regulations from President Barack Obama. As of Tuesday evening, a committee spokesman had insisted the show would go on.

For all the dire warnings, most Americans welcome a five percent cut in overall federal spending this year. But the defense budget is another matter. The public by nearly 2-1, 61-33 percent, supports cutting the overall budget along the lines of the sequester that took effect last Friday. But by nearly an identical margin, Americans in this ABC News/Washington Post poll oppose an eight percent across-the-board cut in military spending. See PDF with full results, charts and tables here. These views come before the $85 billion in cuts this year have taken hold, leaving open the

On March 4, the House of Representatives put forth a spending bill that adds $2 billion for embassy and consulate security in a bid to prevent another Benghazi-like attack. This is part of the larger bill that keeps the government running through Sept. 30, 2012, and which prevents the military from facing sequester cuts before that date. The additional funds for embassy and consulate security come as a result of State Department review that called for "a more serious and sustained commitment [to embassy security] from Congress."

Less than two months into his second term, President Barack Obama´s approval rating has dropped and Americans blame him and his fellow Democrats almost as much as his Republican opponents for a fiscal mess. A Reuters/Ipsos online poll released on Wednesday showed 43 percent of people approve of Obama´s handling of his job, down 7 percentage points from February 19. Most of that steep drop came in the week to February 26 when it was becoming clear that Washington was going to be unable to put aside partisan differences and agree to halt automatic budget cuts

When the Obama administration finalized its regulation requiring health care plans to provide cost-free coverage for sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs, House Speaker John Boehner — as this column noted last year — was one of those who correctly argued that the regulation was an attack on religious freedom and that Congress must not let it stand. On Wednesday, in craven contradiction to that position, Boehner plans to lead the Republican-controlled House in enacting a continuing resolution that will fund the government for the rest of fiscal 2013 and

Congratulations to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who has advanced into the ranks of GOP presidential timber candidates targeted for destruction by the political establishment. The latest evidence, coming in the wake of publication of his new book, The Last Line of Defense, is convincing. The National Journal, which targets the Washington political set (and charges a lot of money for its insider reports - "Make the power connection"), has published a profile questioning Cuccinelli´s political viability because he is a skeptic on Anthropogenic Global Warming theory. A shiver to remind him of his own mortality should have danced over President Barack Obama upon hearing about the death of his book-giving friend and fellow traveler in Socialism Hugo Chavez. Both men shared so much in common. Both held and hold a stranglehold over millions of people in their respective countries; both worshipped and still worship at the altar of socialism. Both were made omnipotent courtesy of the Boob Tube. Chavez was 57, Obama is 51. But as powerful as he was and with as much control as he exerted over the masses

A pro-immigration Republican super-PAC led by former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez could support primary challenges against GOP lawmakers who take a hard line on the issue. Gutierrez, the head of the newly formed Republicans for Immigration Reform, told The Hill that his group’s main push will be to give cover to Republicans who support immigration reform. But if anti-immigration Republicans face their own primary challenges, Gutierrez said, he’d take a hard look at spending against them as well. “We focus primarily on ‘take the vote now and we’ll support you.’ Those who don’t take

BEIJING -- Pack your own toothbrush. That´s an order. Military officials descending on China´s capital for the country´s biggest political event have been told to bring their own toiletries. Legislative delegates arriving at the airport no longer find welcoming teams of photogenic, waving women, and police aren´t clearing their way through Beijing´s traffic snarl. Once feted with banquets of lobster and sharks´ fin, the delegates now serve themselves at drab buffets, and stay in guesthouses instead of luxury hotels. China´s new leader Xi Jinping has declared a ban on official extravagance, and that has banished some of the usual pomp
