For all the dire warnings, most Americans welcome a five percent cut in overall federal spending this year. But the defense budget is another matter. The public by nearly 2-1, 61-33 percent, supports cutting the overall budget along the lines of the sequester that took effect last Friday. But by nearly an identical margin, Americans in this ABC News/Washington Post poll oppose an eight percent across-the-board cut in military spending. See PDF with full results, charts and tables here. These views come before the $85 billion in cuts this year have taken hold, leaving open the

On March 4, the House of Representatives put forth a spending bill that adds $2 billion for embassy and consulate security in a bid to prevent another Benghazi-like attack. This is part of the larger bill that keeps the government running through Sept. 30, 2012, and which prevents the military from facing sequester cuts before that date. The additional funds for embassy and consulate security come as a result of State Department review that called for "a more serious and sustained commitment [to embassy security] from Congress."

Since CBS News learned that the Obama administration delivered Benghazi documents to the Senate Intelligence Committee last Thursday, a source who has viewed the documents is telling the network that someone “in a federal agency ‘press shop’ was involved in changing the talking points to remove al-Qaeda.” (Snip) In fact, CBS’s source says the docs say that there were warnings from Libya that were sent to Washington days before the deadly attack on the U.S. mission that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens that specifically alerted the

Less than two months into his second term, President Barack Obama´s approval rating has dropped and Americans blame him and his fellow Democrats almost as much as his Republican opponents for a fiscal mess. A Reuters/Ipsos online poll released on Wednesday showed 43 percent of people approve of Obama´s handling of his job, down 7 percentage points from February 19. Most of that steep drop came in the week to February 26 when it was becoming clear that Washington was going to be unable to put aside partisan differences and agree to halt automatic budget cuts

A new policy that was created in part with the consultation of Planned Parenthood of Illinois will require Chicago Public School students from kindergarteners and up to receive sexual health education instruction beginning in 2015. According to the Chicago Public Schools website, the new policy passed last week requires “minimum instructional minutes” for students, and instructional material is tailored around age-appropriateness and “medically accurate information.” “It is important that we provide students of all ages with accurate and appropriate information so they can make healthy choices in regards to their social interactions, behaviors,

When the Obama administration finalized its regulation requiring health care plans to provide cost-free coverage for sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs, House Speaker John Boehner — as this column noted last year — was one of those who correctly argued that the regulation was an attack on religious freedom and that Congress must not let it stand. On Wednesday, in craven contradiction to that position, Boehner plans to lead the Republican-controlled House in enacting a continuing resolution that will fund the government for the rest of fiscal 2013 and

Congratulations to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who has advanced into the ranks of GOP presidential timber candidates targeted for destruction by the political establishment. The latest evidence, coming in the wake of publication of his new book, The Last Line of Defense, is convincing. The National Journal, which targets the Washington political set (and charges a lot of money for its insider reports - "Make the power connection"), has published a profile questioning Cuccinelli´s political viability because he is a skeptic on Anthropogenic Global Warming theory. The article by Cora Davenport casts him as an anti-science nut

A shiver to remind him of his own mortality should have danced over President Barack Obama upon hearing about the death of his book-giving friend and fellow traveler in Socialism Hugo Chavez. Both men shared so much in common. Both held and hold a stranglehold over millions of people in their respective countries; both worshipped and still worship at the altar of socialism. Both were made omnipotent courtesy of the Boob Tube. Chavez was 57, Obama is 51. But as powerful as he was and with as much control as he exerted over the masses

The text of the new CR was posted online in the House document depository at 2:21 p.m. on Monday. The House leadership has now informed members that the chamber will start the final vote on this CR between 12:45 p.m. and 1:00 pm today.

A pro-immigration Republican super-PAC led by former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez could support primary challenges against GOP lawmakers who take a hard line on the issue. Gutierrez, the head of the newly formed Republicans for Immigration Reform, told The Hill that his group’s main push will be to give cover to Republicans who support immigration reform. But if anti-immigration Republicans face their own primary challenges, Gutierrez said, he’d take a hard look at spending against them as well. “We focus primarily on ‘take the vote now and we’ll support you.’ Those who don’t take

Though Robinson allowed that "freedom of speech suffered greatly" under Chavez, he praised, "He provided medical attention that the poor of Venezuela hadn´t received before, and, and, frankly, it was the first time in many decades that a leader had paid that kind of attention to the poor majority in Venezuela." BEIJING -- Pack your own toothbrush. That´s an order. Military officials descending on China´s capital for the country´s biggest political event have been told to bring their own toiletries. Legislative delegates arriving at the airport no longer find welcoming teams of photogenic, waving women, and police aren´t clearing their way through Beijing´s traffic snarl. Once feted with banquets of lobster and sharks´ fin, the delegates now serve themselves at drab buffets, and stay in guesthouses instead of luxury hotels. China´s new leader Xi Jinping has declared a ban on official extravagance, and that has banished some of the usual pomp

WASHINGTON - The U.S. government shut down on Wednesday ahead of a fierce snowstorm packing heavy, wet snow that had blanketed the Midwest, leaving thousands without power and forcing hundreds of flights to be canceled. Washington could get slammed by its biggest snowfall in as much as two years, with 6 inches to 12 inches (15 cm to 30 cm) expected after the storm moved eastward into the mid-Atlantic states, the National Weather Service said. The government, already hit by $85 billion in overall budget cuts that took effect last Friday, ordered 375,000 federal workers in the Washington area

Like the "Chief Calligrapher," Patricia A. Blair, who has an annual salary of $96,725, and her two deputies, Debra S. Brown, who gets paid $85,953 per year, and Richard T. Muffler, who gets paid $94,372 every year. In all, the White House appears to employ 3 calligraphers for a yearly total of $277,050.

Sen. Paul was responding to comments by Holder released Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee approved the nomination of John Brennan, President Obama´s pick to be his next C.I.A. Director. Paul said in a statement obtained by Fox News that Holder sent him two letters regarding the constitutionality of the use of legal force such as drones against Americans

Like virtually every single American who used to have ambition, we´ve been aroused by President Obama´s unifying rhetoric to stop striving for wealth ourselves and simply start hating those who already have it. It´s so much easier to criticize than to emulate. So, when the one-time Chicago slumlord attorney points out the outrageous inequality of the American tax system, we agree on the need for radical Alinsky-style change. If the top 2% of the American public pays only 45% of federal taxes, there´s something obviously unfair.

WASHINGTON — As political re-entries go, Jeb Bush’s has been rocky. After watching from the sidelines since before President Obama was first elected, Mr. Bush, a former Republican governor of Florida, injected himself into the debate over revamping the nation’s immigration system this week — and in the process opened the door just a crack to a 2016 run for the White House. The vehicle for Mr. Bush’s return to the national conversation was, as it often is for politicians these days, the publication of a new book. In Mr. Bush’s case, the book argues for an

Vanity Fair has published a few excerpts of Zev Chafets’ forthcoming biography of FOX News chief Roger Ailes – who admits that he likes Vice President Joe Biden. “I have a soft spot for Joe Biden,” he said. “I like him. But he’s dumb as an ashtray.” Other interesting nuggets include Ailes’ disdain for Newt Gingrich – “He’s a sore loser and if he had won he would have been a sore winner,” he asserts. While Obama was running for President, Ailes explains, he was concerned about the way that Sean Hannity portrayed him on the network.

WASHINGTON — With Republican leaders in Congress forswearing budget negotiations over new revenues, President Obama has begun reaching around them to Republican lawmakers with a history of willingness to cut bipartisan deals. Mr. Obama has invited about a dozen Republican senators out to dinner on Wednesday night, after speaking with several of them by phone in recent days, according to people familiar with the invitation. And next week, according to those people and others who did not want to be identified, he will make a rare foray to Capitol Hill to meet separately with the Republican and
