WASHINGTON - The U.S. government shut down on Wednesday ahead of a fierce snowstorm packing heavy, wet snow that had blanketed the Midwest, leaving thousands without power and forcing hundreds of flights to be canceled. Washington could get slammed by its biggest snowfall in as much as two years, with 6 inches to 12 inches (15 cm to 30 cm) expected after the storm moved eastward into the mid-Atlantic states, the National Weather Service said. The government, already hit by $85 billion in overall budget cuts that took effect last Friday, ordered 375,000 federal workers in the Washington area

Finally after several years of the intrigue associated with the biggest leak of government classified documents to the WikiLeaks website, the perpetrator, Pvt. Bradley Manning, has admitted guilt to lesser counts of the charges against him. (Snip)We have another high profile case involving a military man, Maj. Nadal Hasan, who shot and killed 13 people and wounded 30 others at Fort Hood, Texas. This happened on Nov. 5, 2009, a full 40 months ago. Our government, by the way, does not call it an act of terrorism, but rather defines it as workplace violence, even after there is proof

With the White House closing its doors to public tour groups in order to save money for the sequester, it´s worth remembering some of the other costs the White House incurs annually. Like the "Chief Calligrapher," Patricia A. Blair, who has an annual salary of $96,725, and her two deputies, Debra S. Brown, who gets paid $85,953 per year, and Richard T. Muffler, who gets paid $94,372 every year. In all, the White House appears to employ 3 calligraphers for a yearly total of $277,050.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is blasting Attorney General Eric Holder´s assertion that the government could conceivably use drones against its own citizens in the U.S. as "frightening," saying such an action would violate the Constitution. Paul was responding to comments by Holder released Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee approved the nomination of John Brennan, President Obama´s pick to be his next C.I.A. Director. Paul said in a statement obtained by Fox News that Holder sent him two letters regarding the constitutionality of the use of legal force such as drones against Americans

Like virtually every single American who used to have ambition, we´ve been aroused by President Obama´s unifying rhetoric to stop striving for wealth ourselves and simply start hating those who already have it. It´s so much easier to criticize than to emulate. So, when the one-time Chicago slumlord attorney points out the outrageous inequality of the American tax system, we agree on the need for radical Alinsky-style change. If the top 2% of the American public pays only 45% of federal taxes, there´s something obviously unfair.

WASHINGTON — As political re-entries go, Jeb Bush’s has been rocky. After watching from the sidelines since before President Obama was first elected, Mr. Bush, a former Republican governor of Florida, injected himself into the debate over revamping the nation’s immigration system this week — and in the process opened the door just a crack to a 2016 run for the White House. The vehicle for Mr. Bush’s return to the national conversation was, as it often is for politicians these days, the publication of a new book. In Mr. Bush’s case, the book argues for an

Vanity Fair has published a few excerpts of Zev Chafets’ forthcoming biography of FOX News chief Roger Ailes – who admits that he likes Vice President Joe Biden. “I have a soft spot for Joe Biden,” he said. “I like him. But he’s dumb as an ashtray.” Other interesting nuggets include Ailes’ disdain for Newt Gingrich – “He’s a sore loser and if he had won he would have been a sore winner,” he asserts. While Obama was running for President, Ailes explains, he was concerned about the way that Sean Hannity portrayed him on the network.

WASHINGTON — With Republican leaders in Congress forswearing budget negotiations over new revenues, President Obama has begun reaching around them to Republican lawmakers with a history of willingness to cut bipartisan deals. Mr. Obama has invited about a dozen Republican senators out to dinner on Wednesday night, after speaking with several of them by phone in recent days, according to people familiar with the invitation. And next week, according to those people and others who did not want to be identified, he will make a rare foray to Capitol Hill to meet separately with the Republican and

Italian police have broken up a huge money-laundering scheme run by the IRA and the Mafia which has allegedly duped hundreds of holiday home investors across Europe. A British man, said to be involved with the republican terrorist organisation, is being sought by detectives investigating the £390m fraud which was based around a development on the beautiful coast of Calabria in Southern Italy. Italian authorities arrested 16 people in dawn raids and issued a warrant for the arrest of Henry James Fitzsimons, 63, from Belfast, saying he was "a subject considered by the British authorities to be close to

Implementation of the taxes and fees from President Obama’s healthcare law is on track despite the cutbacks at the IRS from sequestration. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010 and derided by Republicans as “ObamaCare,” contains the broadest set of tax changes enacted in some two decades — more than 40 alterations in all, including penalties on people who choose not to purchase insurance.

In Spain, which experienced a drought in the summer of 2012, the olive harvest is predicted to be down by as much as 60 per cent this year compared to last – from 1.6 million tons to 700,000 tons. This has created a shortage in extra virgin olive oil and pushed up prices as a result. British supermarkets already use olive oil as a loss leader, which means they use the low price to attract shoppers who will then buy more expensive products on top. But experts are now saying the cheap prices are unsustainable given the shortage.

The media threat to our democracy is a clear and present danger to our nation´s future. This is more than merely "A Slobbering Love Affair," as described by Jonah Goldberg in his book subtitled: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media. No. The blind and rabid media support and political activism for their de-facto socialist party and president is the most significant contributor to our social destruction.

The Army’s 7th Armoured Brigade Headquarters will return from Germany and become part of a new infantry unit that will only be equippped with wheeled reconnaissance vehicles, the MoD admitted. The move ends the armoured role of a tank force that won fame in North Africa under General Bernard Montgomery with victories in battles including El Alamein. Tank crews fighting under the famous black and red badge also fought with distinction against Iraqi forces in both the first and second Gulf Wars. Another celebrated unit, the 4th Mechanized Brigade, known as the Black Rats, will also lose its role

Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly on Tuesday night repeatedly accused liberal radio talk show host Alan Colmes of "lying" during a heated shouting match on "The O´Reilly Factor." O’Reilly kicked off his show by saying President Barack Obama does not want to “solve the fiscal mess" and that he is too focused on flipping the Republican-held House back to the Democrats to deal with the country´s economic issues. “That is very disturbing,” O’Reilly said. Fox News contributors Colmes and Monica Crowley then stopped by to discuss the issue — and Colmes and O’Reilly quickly found themselves at odds.

Barack Obama’s position on gay marriage hasn’t so much “evolved” as revolved. In 1996, as a state Senate candidate in Illinois, he told Outlines (which became the Windy City Times), a gay magazine based on Chicago’s North Side, that he supported “legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight any effort to prohibit such marriages.” Even some on the left acknowledge that he and his aides have been lying about his supposed evolution on gay marriage for years. “He always supported it,” David Plotz of Slate has written.

Many conservatives, myself included, find themselves in despair about the combination of Barack Obama’s reign of narcissism and the Republican opposition’s incapacities. We might take heart, however, in considering the possibility that the sandworm has begun to turn against The One. At least a few small signs indicate that Obama might have pushed his hyperactive self-regard too far. Obama’s job approval, as per Gallup, has dropped from +13 to dead even — 46-46 — in just about a week. Even the rabidly liberal Bill Keller of the New York Times is slamming Obama’s handling of the sequester.

Fox News chief Roger Ailes calls former House Speaker Newt Gingrich "a p***k" and a "sore loser" in an excerpt from a forthcoming biography by Zev Chafets, an exclusive excerpt of which has just been published in Vanity Fair. Ailes remark about Gingrich came during the 2012 campaign season when Gingrich, a former Fox News contributor, complained that the network was giving too much support to Mitt Romney. According to Chafets´ report, Ailes found the complaint self-serving and disloyal, and told his spokesman Brian Lewis to “brush [Gingrich] back." “He’s a sore loser and if he had won

In Chicago, voters are familiar with human nature. This may explain why no one believes Mayor Rahm Emanuel when he says concern for children is the motive for his promotion of anti-speeding cameras to milk money from the city´s motorists. A Chicago Tribune poll finds even those most inclined to support the cameras were cynical about Mayor Rahm´s motives: "Senior citizens and women voters were evenly split on whether they favored or opposed cameras, but they showed broad consensus that they believed Emanuel sought cameras to raise revenue, not save lives." When governments are engaged in sleazy new forms

The past couple of weeks have played out very strangely in Venezuela. In the span of a few days, we were told that Hugo Chávez was probably dead then probably not then definitely so. But where´s the body? Conspiracy theorists are going to have a ball with this. Before we start exploring the crazy world of crackpot conspiracy theories, let´s get one thing straight. Hugo Chávez is dead. He was very sick with cancer for a very long time, and despite the Venezuelan people´s holding out hope that he would recover, Chávez succumbed to his illness.

When in a hole, keep right on digging. That´s the attitude of a number of movement conservatives, who, in reaction to last year´s shellacking, seem to want to make certain they never climb out. The plan, should there be one, seems to come in three parts: First, whine, lament and rend garments in public; second, blame everyone else for your failure to win much since Reagan left office, and third, having come out of a cycle in which you lost increasing numbers of various people, do try your hardest to lose even more. As to point one, shut up, because nobody cares
