The Obama administration denied an appeal for flexibility in lessening the sequester’s effects, with an email this week appearing to show officials in Washington that because they already had promised the cuts would be devastating, they now have to follow through on that. In the email sent Monday by Charles Brown, an official with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service office in Raleigh, N.C., Mr. Brown asked “if there was any latitude” in how to spread the sequester cuts across the region to lessen

RUSH: We´ve been talking about the sequester. Obama is purposefully inflicting pain on people in order to experience political gain. Now, one of the challenging things about this, as you all know, is we are attempting outreach to the low-information voters out there. I´ve heard people say, "But, Rush, by definition low-information voters are not listening to you." Oh, yes, they are. You must understand, folks, that most low-information voters don´t think of themselves as low-information voters. You remember when Mitt Romney made his campaign appearance last May to the usual batch of Republican donors,

Let´s dwell on that interesting exchange at Friday´s press conference between President Obama and CNN´s Jessica Yellin: Yellin: Mr. President, to your question, what could you do--first of all, couldn´t you just have them down here and refuse to let them leave the room until you have a deal? Obama: I mean, Jessica, I am not a dictator. I´m the President. So, ultimately, if Mitch McConnell or John Boehner say, we need to go to catch a plane, I can´t have Secret Service block the doorway, right? When we first heard Obama´s "I am not a dictator," as

For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, federal airport screeners will allow passengers to carry onto a plane small knives, as well as golf clubs, hockey sticks and pool cues. The policy change, which will take effect April 25, was immediately criticized by flight attendants, who say the move will create an unnecessary risk and further crowd the already limited space in the overhead bins. "While we agree that a passenger wielding a small knife or swinging a golf club or hockey stick poses less of a threat to the pilot locked

Yes, there´s been a shift of power in Arlington, which may or may not be the same as a power struggle, but the end result is the same. Either way, Jon Daniels wins and a guy named Rick George wins, because the ownership group of the Texas Rangers decided that was the direction to go. And the loser in all this? Nolan Ryan. All the above is a surprising development, and a risky development — I also say it’s a stupid development, because why jack with what has worked so well — but all of the above has been thoroughly sourced.

A very courageous fifth-grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools has written a scathing critique of the almost comical misery she and her students endured when they participated in a massive February 28 event kicking off Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools campaign. The First Lady’s campaign is an effort to improve (and in some cases, bring back) physical education in American schools. White House officials called the event “a groundbreaking, earth-shattering, awesomely-inspiring day.” Lisa Putnam and her fifth grades most certainly did not experience the event the same way, however.

While some focus on the freak show aspects of the coming Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) meeting — does anyone really care what Sarah Palin will say, and is anyone except joyous Democrats and suicidal Republicans not yet bored by what Ted Cruz says? — the real show will lie in the Bush v. Rubio battle over immigration. Former Florida Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, who is likely running for president, has fired an anti-immigration shot over the bow of current Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who is likely running for president, by opposing a path to citizenship on immigration.

Dennis Rodman, just back from visiting Kim Jong Un, was escorted out of the Time Hotel in Midtown on Sunday after spending hours at the restaurant bar loudly telling anyone who would listen what a great guy the North Korean dictator is. “He was at the bar at Serafina for three hours,” says a spy. “He kept saying what a nice guy Kim is, and how Kim just wants to talk to President Obama about basketball. He was waving around a signed copy of the dictator’s huge manifesto, telling everyone they should read it.”

Don’t tell the Tea Party, but the tag team of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell are currently mopping the floor with Barack Obama. The president convincingly won a second term in November, but since that time, the congressional Republican leadership has outfoxed, outmaneuvered and plain out-strategized him on just about every issue. On taxes, McConnell (R-Ky.) just flat-out beat Joe Biden. He preserved 98 percent of the Bush tax cuts in perpetuity, which from a policy perspective is huge. He also made sure that the payroll tax holiday came to a conclusion, thereby making sure that every American

In the days leading up to sequestration, President Obama and other administration officials often singled out Head Start as one of the vital programs that would be severely impacted by the automatic spending cuts. Phrases like "70,000 kids get thrown off of Head Start" and "70,000 young children would be kicked off Head Start" were common refrains. On Friday, as the sequester went into effect, President Obama himself said: [F]olks who suddenly -- might have been working all their lives to get an education,

George Zimmerman´s attorneys stunned court observers Tuesday when they waived their client´s right to a "Stand Your Ground" hearing slated for April that might have led to a dismissal of the charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin a year ago. However, the defense lawyers didn´t say whether they would waive the immunity hearing outright. They left open the possibility for that hearing to be rolled into Zimmerman´s second degree murder trial. Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain in his Florida subdivision, shot and killed the teen, who was visiting a house

Convicted fraudster Anthony Marshall has been caught in yet another scam — this time trying to sell off a century-old Astor family heirloom that’s actually a phony, The Post has learned. Marshall, who was convicted in 2009 of conspiring to steal $60 million from his mother, Brooke Astor, has been hawking a gold pocket watch that he says his grandfather John Jacob Astor IV wore when he died on the Titanic in 1912, sources said. The timepiece does exist — but it was purchased by a West Coast developer in 1997,

Barack Obama´s threats to use military force to prevent Iran securing a nuclear weapon are more than idle bluffs, vice-president Joe Biden told the biggest pro-Israeli lobbying group Aipac on Monday. Biden said that while the US preferred a diplomatic solution to the standoff with Iran, a military option remained on the table. "The president of the United States cannot, and does not, bluff. President Barack Obama is not bluffing," Biden told the audience in Washington. Israel is seeking assurances of support from the US, should it decide to launch air strikes against Iran´s nuclear facilities.

Never say the White House isn’t affected by sequestration. The Visitors Office just notified Congress that tours of the White House are cancelled until further notice. “Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House Tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice,” the White House email to legislative offices explains. “Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule affected tours. We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular Spring touring season.” Here is the email:

Nate Thayer, a veteran journalist, posted on his blog an email exchange between The Atlantic’s global editor — Olga Khazan — and himself, that is guaranteed to frustrate you if you’ve ever freelanced. Thankfully, Thayer deals with the emails in the best way possible. It began with Khazan emailing Thayer to ask about republishing something he had written on The Atlantic. This part is great. Any freelancer would be ecstatic to have such a respected publication (or any publication, really) contact them. Typically freelancers are the ones doing the asking.

New York - The UN security council is considering imposing some of the toughest sanctions yet conceived against North Korea as senior diplomats from the 15 council member nations began discussions on a draft resolution framed by the US and China that would seek to deflect Pyongyang from its belligerent nuclear path. (Snip) In a statement delivered to the security council, Rice said the sanctions would target the "illicit activities of North Korean diplomatic personnel, North Korean banking relationships, illicit transfers of bulk cash and new travel restrictions". New York - The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday was investigating a commercial pilot´s report that he saw a drone in the sky as he approached John F. Mr Obama´s approval rating last week fell by seven points to 46 percent, its lowest level since he won re-election last November. His disapproval rating also rose to 46, a record high for the same period. The poll findings appeared to represent an abrupt end to a post-election "honeymoon", during which Mr Obama scaled heights of popularity that he had not enjoyed for some three years. They emerged after Mr Obama tried to blame Republicans for inflicting "unnecessary and inexcusable" damage on the economy by allowing the $85 billion (£56 billion) in across-the-board annual cuts. The so-called "sequestration" of public

Colorado´s Democratic lawmakers considering more gun control in the state have once again proven they are way in over their heads when it comes to discussing the issue of rape and concealed carry on campus. Three weeks ago, Democratic Rep. Joe Salazar suggested rape whistles and call boxes were sufficient enough for women to prevent rape. Another Democratic lawmaker, Jesse Ulibarri suggested people use ballpoint pens to fight back against a gun wielding madman on a rampage. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs suggested women vomit and urinate on their rapist.

Nairobi, Kenya - Uhuru Kenyatta, a Kenyan politician who has been charged by the International Criminal Court with crimes against humanity, was leading by a wide margin in the Kenya election on Tuesday, with nearly half the votes counted. Mr. Kenyatta, who comes from one of the richest, most powerful families in Africa and has been accused of bankrolling death squads that killed women and children during the chaos of Kenya’s election five years ago, was leading 54 percent to 42 percent over the second-place candidate, Raila Odinga, Kenya’s prime minister. But there was a wrinkle.

As President Obama launches into the next phase of budget negotiations with Congress, recent estimates may lend credence to Republican claims that the federal coffers are well fed on taxes. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the federal government is on pace to bring in a record $2.7 trillion in tax receipts this fiscal year. The increase reflects a steady post-recession rise in revenues. They ticked up 6 percent in 2012, but according to the CBO could jump 11 percent in 2013. The expected tax boost comes after Congress and the White House struck

John Kerry became the latest to criticize Dennis Rodman in the aftermath of the former NBA star´s trip to North Korea and visit with the reclusive communist country´s leader, Kim Jong Un. But the secretary of State phrased his comments about the controversial basketball player in the nicest way possible, telling NBC News from Doha, Qatar on Tuesday: “Dennis Rodman was a great basketball player. And as a diplomat, he is a great basketball player. And that’s where we’ll leave it.” See what he did there? Perhaps a little lesson in diplomacy for Rodman, who has called Un "a good guy" and "my friend"
