Barack Obama´s threats to use military force to prevent Iran securing a nuclear weapon are more than idle bluffs, vice-president Joe Biden told the biggest pro-Israeli lobbying group Aipac on Monday. Biden said that while the US preferred a diplomatic solution to the standoff with Iran, a military option remained on the table. "The president of the United States cannot, and does not, bluff. President Barack Obama is not bluffing," Biden told the audience in Washington. Israel is seeking assurances of support from the US, should it decide to launch air strikes against Iran´s nuclear facilities.

Never say the White House isn’t affected by sequestration. The Visitors Office just notified Congress that tours of the White House are cancelled until further notice. “Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House Tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice,” the White House email to legislative offices explains. “Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule affected tours. We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular Spring touring season.” Here is the email:

Nate Thayer, a veteran journalist, posted on his blog an email exchange between The Atlantic’s global editor — Olga Khazan — and himself, that is guaranteed to frustrate you if you’ve ever freelanced. Thankfully, Thayer deals with the emails in the best way possible. It began with Khazan emailing Thayer to ask about republishing something he had written on The Atlantic. This part is great. Any freelancer would be ecstatic to have such a respected publication (or any publication, really) contact them. Typically freelancers are the ones doing the asking.

New York - The UN security council is considering imposing some of the toughest sanctions yet conceived against North Korea as senior diplomats from the 15 council member nations began discussions on a draft resolution framed by the US and China that would seek to deflect Pyongyang from its belligerent nuclear path. (Snip) In a statement delivered to the security council, Rice said the sanctions would target the "illicit activities of North Korean diplomatic personnel, North Korean banking relationships, illicit transfers of bulk cash and new travel restrictions". House investigators learned Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials developed plans to release about 5,000 illegal immigrant detainees, although Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has denied responsibility for the decision. “An internal document obtained by the House Judiciary Committee shows that Administration officials at ICE prepared cold calculations to release thousands of criminal aliens onto the streets and did not demonstrate any consideration of the impact this decision would have on the safety of Americans,” committee chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., announced.

Mr Obama´s approval rating last week fell by seven points to 46 percent, its lowest level since he won re-election last November. His disapproval rating also rose to 46, a record high for the same period. The poll findings appeared to represent an abrupt end to a post-election "honeymoon", during which Mr Obama scaled heights of popularity that he had not enjoyed for some three years. They emerged after Mr Obama tried to blame Republicans for inflicting "unnecessary and inexcusable" damage on the economy by allowing the $85 billion (£56 billion) in across-the-board annual cuts. The so-called "sequestration" of public

Colorado´s Democratic lawmakers considering more gun control in the state have once again proven they are way in over their heads when it comes to discussing the issue of rape and concealed carry on campus. Three weeks ago, Democratic Rep. Joe Salazar suggested rape whistles and call boxes were sufficient enough for women to prevent rape. Another Democratic lawmaker, Jesse Ulibarri suggested people use ballpoint pens to fight back against a gun wielding madman on a rampage. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs suggested women vomit and urinate on their rapist.

Nairobi, Kenya - Uhuru Kenyatta, a Kenyan politician who has been charged by the International Criminal Court with crimes against humanity, was leading by a wide margin in the Kenya election on Tuesday, with nearly half the votes counted. Mr. Kenyatta, who comes from one of the richest, most powerful families in Africa and has been accused of bankrolling death squads that killed women and children during the chaos of Kenya’s election five years ago, was leading 54 percent to 42 percent over the second-place candidate, Raila Odinga, Kenya’s prime minister. But there was a wrinkle.

TARPON SPRINGS --From the Athenian columns flanking the school to the maritime decor and sea sponges housed inside, it´s clear Tarpon Springs High School is proud of the town´s Greek heritage. Students and faculty like to boast that its mascot, the Sponger, is the only one in the world. But their tribute to the sponge divers that founded the town was recognized last week, when the school´s mascot was selected by USA Today editors to compete for the title of High School Sports´ Best Mascot. As President Obama launches into the next phase of budget negotiations with Congress, recent estimates may lend credence to Republican claims that the federal coffers are well fed on taxes. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the federal government is on pace to bring in a record $2.7 trillion in tax receipts this fiscal year. The increase reflects a steady post-recession rise in revenues. They ticked up 6 percent in 2012, but according to the CBO could jump 11 percent in 2013. The expected tax boost comes after Congress and the White House struck

John Kerry became the latest to criticize Dennis Rodman in the aftermath of the former NBA star´s trip to North Korea and visit with the reclusive communist country´s leader, Kim Jong Un. But the secretary of State phrased his comments about the controversial basketball player in the nicest way possible, telling NBC News from Doha, Qatar on Tuesday: “Dennis Rodman was a great basketball player. And as a diplomat, he is a great basketball player. And that’s where we’ll leave it.” See what he did there? Perhaps a little lesson in diplomacy for Rodman, who has called Un "a good guy" and "my friend"

The Transportation Security Administration announced Tuesday that U.S. airline passengers will soon be allowed to carry small knives in their carry-on bags, a move that prompted swift condemnation from a flight attendants union. The union for Southwest Airlines flight attendants called the decision "dangerous" and "designed to make the lives of TSA staff easier, but not make flights safer." The changes were made public by TSA Administrator John Pistole during an aviation conference in New York. Starting April 25, passengers going through U.S. airports can bring on board Swiss

Those who prefer speculating about the next presidential election rather than beating their heads against the wall trying to figure a way out of the sequester impasse got something to think about this week courtesy of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Bush, who is making the rounds of every news and talk show that will have him this week to promote a new book, generated some genuine buzz when he specifically refused to rule out running for president in 2016. Throughout the prelude to the 2012 election the younger brother of the 43rd president always avoided

New York - The scene: a Manhattan art-house theater. The cause: a campaign against the gas drilling process known as fracking that’s being led by more than 100 celebrities, including Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Robert Redford, Mark Ruffalo and Mario Batali. It’s an evaluation from your child’s school, but it’s not the kind of report card you were expecting. A Massachusetts school sent home letters in the mail that used body mass index testing to determine weight class percentiles for students, according to a report by Boston Fox affiliate WFXT. The letter labels students as underweight, of a healthy weight, overweight and obese. Cameron Watson, a 10-year-old North Andover athlete and student, fell into the obese category after the screening, according to WFXT. His mother Tracy Watson, told WFXT last week that she was offended by the “fat letter”

He also disclosed on the record for the first time his visit to a Benghazi survivor at Walter Reed, saying he doesn’t know why survivors haven’t yet been heard from.

Washington - A Republican and a Democrat in the US House of Representatives introduced legislation that would make Israel a "major strategic ally," a one of a kind designation. The bill, introduced Monday by Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), was timed for the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, and 13,000 activists are expected to lobby for it and for Iran-related bills on Tuesday. The "major strategic ally" bill codifies a number of existing facets of the relationship, including annual defense assistance and cooperation on missile defense, energy research and cyber security.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Monday blasted Washington for failing to prevent the sequester, saying the debate showed a lack of “real leadership.” “Real leadership would get this fixed. You get everybody in the room and you fix it, and you don’t let them leave until you fix it,” Christie said at a press conference in Jersey City, N.J. “That’s what real leadership is, not calling a meeting two hours before the thing’s going to hit to have a photo-op in the driveway at the White House,” he added. “That’s not real leadership.”

On CNN last night with host Piers Morgan, former CBS broadcaster Dan Rather explained that the sequestration cuts was proof that the political leaders were failing America. Listen, nobody wants to say it and some can accuse me of the harshness of the language, but we have been parachuting into the ‘Valley of the Stupid.’” Rather said bluntly. “And that’s the way it’s viewed around the world. The United States . . . this is dumb.” Rather blamed Republicans for creating the controversy to boost their chances in the 2014 midterm elections.

A Saudi prince has claimed that a list charting the world´s richest richest people has understated his massive wealth. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has severed ties with Forbes magazine after its annual list estimated his net worth at $20billion (£13billion). The figure saw the investor ranked at number 26 on the rich list joint with American Carl Icahn and Canadian media mogul David Thomson. But the prince´s office has claimed that his net worth is more like $29.6billion (£19.5billion), a figure that would have put him in Forbes´ top ten just behind L´Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt.

A group of House Republicans said Tuesday that a bill to fund the federal government should include provisions targeting the contraception mandate in President Obama´s healthcare law. GOP lawmakers reintroduced a bill Tuesday to repeal the contraception mandate. They also pressed their party´s leaders to roll back the provision as part of a continuing resolution later this month to keep the federal government operating. "This attack on religious freedom demands immediate congressional action," the 14 lawmakers wrote. "Nothing short of a full exemption for both nonprofit and for-profit entities will satisfy the demands of the Constitution and common sense."

The impending sequester did not prevent the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from acting in late February to seal a $50-million deal to purchase new uniforms for its agents--uniforms that will be partly manufactured in Mexico. Soon after this new investment in TSA uniforms, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Americans that the lines are already lengthening at airports due to the sequester.
