Michelle Obama’s
public school disaster
Human Events, by John Hayward    Original Article

First Lady Michelle Obama is running a campaign against childhood obesity called “Let’s Move!” In a bit of grim irony, the implementation of this program has been a teachable moment in Big Government stasis and ruling-class arrogance. A fifth-grade teacher named Leah Putnam wrote an account of the “Let’s Move!” ordeal at a forum for Chicago public school teachers – posted, I gather, by a different blog author, who professes themselves an admirer of Mrs. Obama but nevertheless agrees that “the treatment of school children by people who

Dying is effortless. That became clear to me as I lay on a gurney in an emergency department bay at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. It was 10 p.m., almost five hours since my primary-care physician Michael Cirigliano (better known as Dr. Mike from Fox29) diagnosed me as septic, bundled me into his car, and rushed me to the hospital. After several hours of intravenous antibiotics and four liters of fluid, my blood pressure was crashing, a hallmark of sepsis, a potentially fatal condition caused by an exaggerated immune response to injury or infection.

WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano promised to release more illegal immigrants into the United States, saying the budget sequester has left her no choice. Several hundred detainees have already released because of the sequester, she insisted. They were released on bail, or because their legal status had changed, she said. “We’re going to continue to do that … for the foreseeable future,” Napolitano said at a March 4 breakfast meeting hosted by Politico. “We are going to manage our way through this by identifying the lowest risk detainees, and putting them into some kind of alternative to release.”

President Obama plans to keep reaching out to Republicans to try to work out a long-term deficit reduction deal, he said Monday, after spending time over the weekend calling members of Congress. “I will continue to seek out partners on the other side of the aisle so that we can create the kind of balanced approach of spending cuts, revenues, entitlement reform that everyone knows is the right way to do that,” he said at the start of a Cabinet meeting, his first with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, both of

Supporters of industrial hemp gained a powerful ally in Washington several weeks ago when Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) joined fellow Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul and Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) as a co-sponsor of S.359, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013. The House companion, sponsored by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), has 28 co-sponsors. The bills would amend the Controlled Substances Act to exclude industrial hemp, the domestic production of which has been illegal since 1970. Though manufacturing hemp is currently just as illegal as growing smokable pot, 10 states already have frameworks

Last week establishment journalist Bob Woodward of Watergate fame walked back the initial reports that claimed he had been threatened by the Obama White House’s economic adviser Gene Sperling regarding his reporting that President Obama had moved the goal post on the sequester by seeking additional taxes/revenue. Woodward insisted that he had never used the word “threat.” “I think that was Politico’s word,” he said, “I said I think that language is unfortunate and I don’t think it’s the way to operate. . [Sperling’s] language speaks for itself. I don’t think that’s the way to operate.”

There is no "set price" to meet with President Obama, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday amid continued outcry over the role of Organizing for Action, the outside group supporting the president´s agenda. "Any notion that there is a set price for a meeting with the president of the United States is just wrong," Carney said during his daily briefing. Since OFA is intended to back the president´s agenda, it makes sense that Obama would meet with the group, Carney said. "As anyone would expect, the president would likely meet with their representatives to discuss his agenda."

Though there has been one and two-day statistical noise, for most of the year Gallup has shown Obama´s job approval rating safely and consistently at fifty or above. Since Friday, though, the three-day average dipped to a startling 46%. 02/27-03/1 : 47 approve -- 45 disapprove ~02/28-03/2: 46 approve -- 46 disapprove ~03/1-3/3: 46 approve -- 46 disapprove ~This could again be statistical noise or related directly to the sequester negotiations. As much as Democrats and the media want to blame the GOP, people still see Obama as in charge.

Will Smith once stood as arguably the most bankable film star in Hollywood. That was so 2007. The actor suffered a rare box office disappointment a year later with Seven Pounds, and then he kept out of the limelight until last year´s obligatory sequel Men in Black III. This year offers the biggest challenge to Smith´s star status. Can the erstwhile Fresh Prince survive a film project directed by Hollywood laughingstock M. Night Shyamalan as well as a blow to his bipartisan appeal? Over the weekend we learned Smith was one of President Barack Obama´s superbundlers,

Vice President Biden said Monday that President Obama is not "bluffing" about his willingness to use military force to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon -- as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Iran is inching closer to what he calls the "red line." Both leaders spoke at the annual conference for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful pro-Israel lobby. Netanyahu made clear he does not think Iran has yet crossed the "red line" -- which he defines as making 90 percent of the progress toward bomb-ready uranium. But he warned that Iran is getting closer

Rasmussen Questions Media´s

Pollster Scott Rasmussen is questioning the media´s interpretation of polling data that suggest the American public oppose spending cuts and favor spending increases for a variety of programs. In fact, Rasmussen says, Americans favor spending cuts. The misinterpretation, he says, is a result of the fact that the public and the political class interpret the word "cut" differently: in Washington, holding spending steady is defined as a "cut." In a recent, widely reported Pew Research Center poll, Rasmussen notes, a majority of Americans wanted to increase funding or maintain it at current levels for 18 out of 19 programs

The inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation, in an audit released Monday, said that “the increase in reported errors was linked, in part, to a rise in actual errors rather than increased reporting.”

When Democrats in the Texas House met in late January to elect Rep. Yvonne Davis of Dallas as their leader by the slimmest of margins, she promised to listen to their voices and not to unelected outsiders, specifically, Houston Democratic benefactor Steve Mostyn. Almost immediately, the phone of the successful plaintiff´s lawyer lit up with text messages from lawmakers lamenting the remarks of the woman they had just elected as their leader. After all, Mostyn and his wife, Amber, have infused $25 million into Democratic efforts in the past two election cycles. Surely, some respect was owed.
