Gun control stampede misguided

In response to the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, a flurry of laws are being proposed across the nation to keep guns out of the hands of Americans who have been diagnosed with mental disorders and could be dangerous. The New York legislature was first out of the gate when it passed the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act (SAFE) in January. Other states were quick to follow. (Snip) Let´s be thoughtful. These proposals are rushed and are about "doing something," but a more deliberate and effective approach is the one Virginia took after the Virginia Tech massacre

Will Smith once stood as arguably the most bankable film star in Hollywood. That was so 2007. The actor suffered a rare box office disappointment a year later with Seven Pounds, and then he kept out of the limelight until last year´s obligatory sequel Men in Black III. This year offers the biggest challenge to Smith´s star status. Can the erstwhile Fresh Prince survive a film project directed by Hollywood laughingstock M. Night Shyamalan as well as a blow to his bipartisan appeal? Over the weekend we learned Smith was one of President Barack Obama´s superbundlers,

During her Google Hangout today, First Lady Michelle Obama reminded the audience that dogs need a proper diet and exercise, just like children do. The First Lady admitted that President Obama liked to tease their own dog, “Bo” for being lazy, but that they encouraged her girls to take him on walks. “Dogs are no different,” Michelle Obama explained to a woman on the chat. “You want to make sure they are eating a balanced diet, and if they are not an active dog, make sure that their food is reflective of an inactive dog and

Vice President Biden said Monday that President Obama is not "bluffing" about his willingness to use military force to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon -- as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Iran is inching closer to what he calls the "red line." Both leaders spoke at the annual conference for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful pro-Israel lobby. Netanyahu made clear he does not think Iran has yet crossed the "red line" -- which he defines as making 90 percent of the progress toward bomb-ready uranium. But he warned that Iran is getting closer

Workers at a sandwich shop allowed to tell customers food handlers may have the flu. A car dealer told his policy that employees be courteous to customers is illegal. And employees at a nursing home told they can’t keep complaints and concerns about co-workers confidential. Over the last year, the National Labor Relations Board has made 341 rulings, including some that have prompted critics to call it the most activist, pro-worker board ever. And now that a federal court has ruled the current board was put together with unconstitutional recess appointments by President Obama,

President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Naval Academy´s graduation in May. Vice Adm. Michael Miller, the superintendent, told the academy´s Board of Visitors on Monday the president had committed to speak at the May 24 commissioning ceremony. Judy Campbell, an academy spokeswoman, says 16 U.S. presidents have addressed graduating classes at the academy in Annapolis, which is about 30 miles from Washington. Miller told board members more presidents have spoken at Naval Academy graduations than any other service academy. Campbell says Obama will be the sixth president to have spoken twice

Comedy and television icon Bill Cosby slammed Republicans who failed to stand for President Obama’s State of the Union speech, likening them to racists who opposed desegregation. “I think we have people sitting there,” he said, referring to the president’s SOTU speech, during a CNN television interview reported by Mediaite, “who are as bad as the people who were against any kind of desegregation.” His comments came in context of a discussion about racism and the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across Selma, Ala., Mediate reported. Hello everybody. This is a guest post courtesy of Bufo75. It´s a small skirmish in the war against what is arguably the global environmental movement´s biggest lie apart from CAGW--the great "species loss" meme.[Snip]Over to you, Bufo. As my avatar Bufo may indicate one of my interests is herpetology. When my boys were younger I took them on reptile- and amphibian-hunting expeditions all over the world. So naturally whenever I read a headline like the one by John Vidal in last’s week’s Guardian “One in five reptile species faces extinction” my gut response is deep concern

"EPA is on the frontlines of climate action. It is more important than ever that President Obama and the new EPA administrator continue to enforce laws cutting climate pollution," said Climate Reality Project CEO Maggie Fox. Virginia Beach resident Trevor Snowden found this out the hard way when he fired "a shotgun through the door" and faced charges for "reckless handling of a firearm." The 22-year old Snowden fired through a door after seeing two masked men by a window of his residence. Pollster Scott Rasmussen is questioning the media´s interpretation of polling data that suggest the American public oppose spending cuts and favor spending increases for a variety of programs. In fact, Rasmussen says, Americans favor spending cuts. The misinterpretation, he says, is a result of the fact that the public and the political class interpret the word "cut" differently: in Washington, holding spending steady is defined as a "cut." In a recent, widely reported Pew Research Center poll, Rasmussen notes, a majority of Americans wanted to increase funding or maintain it at current levels for 18 out of 19 programs

Federal investigators confirmed Monday that errors by the nation’s air traffic controllers have increased sharply, challenging the Federal Aviation Administration’s contention that most of the jump was due to better data collection. The inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation, in an audit released Monday, said that “the increase in reported errors was linked, in part, to a rise in actual errors rather than increased reporting.”

RICHBURG, SC — Nikki Haley, the self-proclaimed jobs governor, has sold a business on South Carolina again. Haddon House Food Products chose to expand its 25-year-old distribution center in Chester County rather than build a new one in Florida because of incentives and support Haley offered during a 45-minute phone conversation with the New Jersey-based company’s chief executive. “I assumed it would be a three- to five-minute conversation at best,” said a surprised Haddon House boss David Anderson Sr. during a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday with the governor an hour north of Columbia. When Democrats in the Texas House met in late January to elect Rep. Yvonne Davis of Dallas as their leader by the slimmest of margins, she promised to listen to their voices and not to unelected outsiders, specifically, Houston Democratic benefactor Steve Mostyn. Almost immediately, the phone of the successful plaintiff´s lawyer lit up with text messages from lawmakers lamenting the remarks of the woman they had just elected as their leader. After all, Mostyn and his wife, Amber, have infused $25 million into Democratic efforts in the past two election cycles. Surely, some respect was owed.

When Chris Wallace asked Mitt Romney on Fox News Sunday why he lost the election, one of the reasons Romney gave was, “Obamacare was very attractive, particularly [for] those without health insurance, and they came out in large numbers to vote, so that was part of a successful campaign.” Like much of the Republican response to the 2012 election, this is exactly the opposite conclusion from that which should be drawn. Obamacare was the one issue that most pegged Obama as a big government liberal in the eyes of the American citizenry.

Funny what our leaders could learn by sweeping the stairs. This thought occurred to me the other day while I was morosely mulling the state of politics in Washington, and found an analogy in my living room. Actually, my wife found it -- clumps of dirt tracked inside by her husband and son. I wanted to whine and dissemble and divert. I wanted to blame my kid – or at least debate who was most at fault. I wanted to fold my arms and stomp my feet until somebody else cleaned up the mess.

He denied claims, however, that another Islamist leader in the region, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, had been killed, saying that Belmokhtar “is in the Gao region, waging the fight against he enemy.”

The first months of President Obama’s second term are being built around a simple premise: No caving. From the sequester to immigration reform to the broader debate about the role of government in American life, Obama is in an ultra-assertive mood, practically daring Republicans to defy his wishes. It is a clear change for a president who, during his first term, faced criticism from his left flank for being too conciliatory toward the GOP on healthcare reform and, later, during deficit battles. Liberal voices argued that Obama was mistaken in thinking the Republicans had any

The Obama Justice Department is arguing in the United States Supreme Court that children do not need mothers. The Justice Department’s argument on the superfluity of motherhood is presented in a brief the Obama administration filed in the case of Hollingsworth v. The Justice Department presented its conclusions about parenthood in rebutting an argument made by proponents of Proposition 8 that the traditional
