WASHINGTON — A White House official says President Barack Obama on Monday will appoint a new energy secretary and new head of the Environmental Protection Agency. Obama is nominating MIT scientist Ernest Moniz to head the Energy Department and EPA veteran Gina McCarthy to run the environmental agency. She currently serves as EPA´s assistant administrator for air and radiation. Obama will announce the nominations during a White House ceremony Monday morning. Both posts require Senate confirmation. The official requested anonymity in order to confirm the nominations ahead of the president´s formal announcement.

Multiple attacks against security forces in Kenya on Monday killed at least 12 people as Kenyans waited in long lines to cast ballots five years after more than 1,000 people died in election-related violence. A group of 200 secessionists armed with guns, machetes and bows and arrows set a trap for police in the pre-dawn hours, killing five officers, Inspector General David Kimaiyo said. One attacker also died. The group - the Mombasa Republican Council - had threatened election day attacks. A second attack by MRC secessionists in nearby Kilifi killed one police officer and five attackers, Kimaiyo said.

Conservatives should welcome the decline of academia as we know it. I, for one, will celebrate its death by engaging in the same activity that characterized my four years at what some call its pinnacle– drinking a lot of Coors Light. There is still nostalgia among conservatives, especially older ones who have forgotten what college is really like, for the idea of higher education as a rigorous venue for intellectual growth, an environment of exciting and vibrant ideas shared by wise, caring educators dedicated to the pursuit of truth. Today, it is nothing of the sort.

Our feckless leaders may be incapable of passing a budget, but, boy, can they pass the buck. The White House spent last week in full campaign hysteria, blitzing online followers with the message that heartless Republicans are prepared to transform America into “Les Misérables” in order to protect “millionaires and billionaires, oil companies, vacation homes, and private jet owners.” Republicans retort that the budget-cutting Doomsday device called sequester was actually invented by the White House. In fact, the conceptual paternity of sequester was bipartisan. Both sides agreed that Congress should set in

The mystery of the Hindenburg disaster has finally been solved 76 years after the in-flight exposition occurred. The cause of the May 6, 1937, incident that killed 35 of the 100 passengers and crew members on board was static electricity, says a team of experts who have been looking into the real trigger. They say that after the ship flew into a thunderstorm a build up of hydrogen led to the explosion. The iconic airship had reportedly become charged with static as a result of the electrical storm and broken wire or a sticking gas valve leaked the hydrogen into

The Queen is spending a second day in hospital being treated for a stomach illness, but has insisted the rest of the Royal family should carry on with their official duties instead of visiting her. Her Majesty, who will be 87 next month, does not want to "inconvenience" staff at the King Edward VII Hospital in London by having to make arrangements for royal visitors, insisting her hospital stay should be "as low key as possible", sources said. The Duke of Edinburgh will attend a function at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London this evening in his capacity

During his Friday podcast, comedian Adam Carolla skewered California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom for not having a clear answer about why poverty strikes African-Americans and Hispanics in such high numbers. Newsom was a guest on Carolla’s show to promote his book “Citizenville,” which he co-authored with Lisa Dickey. But the Democratic politician invited an attack when he made said both African-American and Hispanics struggle with being prepared for financial hardship. “Think about it — half of African-Americans in the state of California, roughly half of Latino families have no access to a checking account or an ATM

Tuesday it will have been a half-century since the premature death of Patsy Cline deprived the world of one of the finest and most charismatic musical stylists of the 20th century (or of any other century, come to that). Patsy’s many fans, which include me, have every reason to wonder what might have been had she been given a few more decades to perform and record. And every reason to mourn what is surely a considerable loss. But damn I’m glad we had her while we did. What she left behind is a treasure.

The White House’s media management team will be in the public spotlight this week following a series of days in which it leveraged the media to distribute what turned out to be misleading or false information. President Barack Obama told reporters that Capitol Hill workers were facing pay cuts as a result of the looming budget sequester. Education Secretary Arne Duncan cited the same cause when he incorrectly claimed that a school district was already laying off teachers. And White House spokesman Jay Carney understated by a factor of 10 the number of illegal immigrants administration officials released

CAPE TOWN, South Africa—In geology, old is gold. According to the local mining lore here, senior geologists tend to do their work the old-fashioned way. They avoid radar technology, preferring instead to examine termite and ant mounds; they study vegetation and carry divining rods. They´re famous in the often cutthroat industry for their efficiency—also for wearing neckties in the blistering heat. "I only hire old geologists," says Norman Slater, managing director of Slater Coal, a South African coal company. People such as Kevin Petzer, a 65-year-old Zimbabwean who still roams South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia from his base

WASHINGTON — Detroit, near death after years of being crushed by the weight of its own industrial decline, political malfeasance and insurmountable debt, needs a savior. Michigan’s governor will soon appoint an emergency financial manager for the city, giving him or her ?18 months to execute a plan to pull the Motor City out of its financial sinkhole. And Mitt Romney has every reason to volunteer for that job. Romney, appearing this weekend on Fox News in his first set of interviews since losing his presidential bid last fall, said the toughest part

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning pleaded guilty Thursday to 10 charges related to the misuse of federal documents. He will likely spend 20 years in prison for these offenses. He may face further charges, and we hope the military prosecutes him on as many of them as possible. Manning dumped thousands of pages of classified and confidential information into the hands of a foreign entity with an obvious animus against the United States. As employees of a newspaper, we appreciate the help of people inside the government who provide nonpublic information.

Last week, the Partnership for a Secure America (PSA), led by former Democratic representative Lee Hamilton and former Republican senator Warren Rudman, released a letter signed by 36 other formerly important people insisting that the United States must take action on climate change for national-security reasons. The letter begins: The effect of climate change in the world’s most vulnerable regions present[s] a serious threat to American national security interests. As a matter of risk management, the United States must work with international partners, public and private, to address this impending crisis. . . .

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is taking a lot of guff, rightly so, I think, from conservatives over excluding New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and groups like GOProud from its gathering. When the newest conservative hero, Dr. Ben Carson, tells you you’ve screwed up, maybe it is time to rethink the strategy of systematically shrinking the tent. (Snip)The right is not divided into moderates and conservatives, as a smart pollster told me, but between those who can count and those who cannot. Sixty-three months ago Barack Obama officially declared his candidacy for President. Only now are some among the so-called media and ruling elites in America slowly awakening from their self-induced infatuation and beginning to understand who he is. It has become difficult to ignore the overt intimidation, demagoguery and deliberate falsehoods spewed forth by Obama relative to sequestration -- a miniscule cut in the growth of federal spending. However, any cursory examination of his past reveals that these tactics are second nature to the man who currently occupies the Oval Office.

Mayor Bloomberg was booed yesterday as he walked in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade in the hurricane-ravaged Rockaways. The jeers grew so loud toward the end of the Queens parade that mayoral candidate and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn appeared to break away from the mayor to march separately. A spokesman for Quinn later said she always intended to walk separately from the mayor.

As if we hadn´t already seen enough Biblical events this year, a plague of over 30 million locusts swarmed over Egypt´s cities and farms just three weeks before Passover begins. But put your apocalyptic fears to rest. This happens every year as part of the locusts´ natural migration pattern, though this year´s swarm is especially large. That doesn´t mean Egyptians aren´t freaked the heck out by millions of nasty bugs buzzing through the air at all hours of day and night, possibly descending upon the agriculture fields where they´re known to destroy entire crops,

Millions of people around the world watched two global powerhouses conduct their most important business in public last week. One did it with dignity and respect. The other was the government of the United States. The solemn transition marking the end of Pope Benedict’s reign stood in dramatic contrast to the seedy events in Washington. It was the difference between something done right, with pride, and the undignified, embarrassing way our government does things these days. When did it become standard procedure for American leaders to behave like contestants in a freak show? When did it become acceptable for a president

Why do presidents get in trouble in their second terms? They think they have a mandate when they don’t. They believe they’re stronger politically than they really are. They’re convinced they can get away with things other presidents couldn’t. They think too highly of themselves personally and act accordingly. President Obama hasn’t hit the second-term skids—yet. And he insists he knows the perils of four more years in the White House and how to avoid them. But there are signs of trouble ahead, signs that Obama and his advisers appear not to have recognized. Sign number one is the sequester.

Former NBA start Dennis Rodman stood by his controversial trip to North Korea and remarks about its dictator Kim Jong-Un on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Rodman downplayed his trip that some are calling “basketball diplomacy” saying that he is not a diplomat while brushing aside allegations about North Korean death camps by saying “we do the same thing here.” Rodman, wearing sunglasses indoors and dressed in a money jacket and blue polo baseball cap, said he did not talk about politics with Kim, sticking to basketball and having a good time with the North Korean dictator.

Guns: An Illinois court has ruled that the Second Amendment means what it says and has ordered the state legislature to adopt a law by June that lets citizens bear arms in self-defense, not just keep them. On Feb. 22, a 5-4 majority of the 10-member U.S. Seventh Court of Appeals upheld the Dec. 11 decision, which had been rendered by a three-member panel, to address absurdity and inconsistency of Illinois gun laws that allowed ownership of a firearm, but not the right to carry it outside the home.

SELMA, Ala. — The vice president and black leaders commemorating a famous civil rights march on Sunday said efforts to diminish the impact of African-Americans´ votes haven´t stopped in the years since the 1965 Voting Rights Act added millions to Southern voter rolls. More than 5,000 people followed Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma´s annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee. The event commemorates the "Bloody Sunday" beating of voting rights marchers — including a young Lewis — by state troopers as they began a march to Montgomery in March 1965.

We found a leader, but hardly anybody noticed. Never mind Rubio and Ryan, or people named Bush. Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama is the best we’ve got, and he’s plenty good. In fact, his words on the Senate floor when he implored his colleagues to reject the nomination of Jack Lew for Treasury secretary are as good as it gets. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard anything as elegant, compelling, honorable, and philosophically coherent as Sessions’ speech on the 27th of February. You probably missed it, what with all the excitement of the epic gladiatorial combat

In the aftermath of the increasing strange story about Bob Woodward being threatened by the White House, there seem to be a few competing entries in the, “what does it all mean” sweepstakes. There is clearly some debate over precisely how much of a “threat” it really was or was intended to be, but does that mean that it was a big nothingburger? Matt Lewis seems to be leaning that way, opining that we’ve all been played. Sperling’s email eventually does say, “I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret
