An Iranian dhow seized off the Yemeni coast was carrying sophisticated Chinese antiaircraft missiles, a development that could signal an escalation of Iran’s support to its Middle Eastern proxies, alarming other countries in the region and renewing a diplomatic challenge to the United States. (Snip) The missiles were labeled QW-1M and bore stencils suggesting that they had been assembled at a factory represented by the state-owned China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation, sanctioned by the United States for transfers of missile technology to Pakistan and Iran.

The Obama campaign is identifying high-dollar fundraisers for the fourth quarter of 2012. The updated list of bundlers on the campaign´s web site includes roughly a dozen new names in the $500,000 and above category. They include actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, as well as clean-energy venture capitalist Steve Westly. Westly was bumped up from the $200,000 to $500,000 range, while the Smiths are on the list for the first time. The couple hosted a glitzy fundraiser at their California home in October. The full updated list is here. The new names in the half-million-dollar range:

Cairo - Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday it is vital that Egypt revive its economy and that the country´s fractious political parties reach agreement on painful economic reforms to secure an IMF loan. (Snip) The Islamist government of President Mohamed Mursi said on Thursday it would invite an IMF team to reopen talks on a $4.8 billion loan that was agreed last November but put on hold at Cairo´s request during street violence the following month. On an October afternoon 40 years ago, on a beautiful block in Park Slope, Brooklyn, a crime occurred in a split second that was as permanent as it was cruel. Grown-ups tried to make sense of it, even use it as a cautionary tale for their children, but in the end, many just put it out of their minds. How could they not? It was just too awful, its lessons too hard to fathom. The victim was named Josh Miele. He was 4. On that day, Oct. 5, 1973, he was playing in the backyard

The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrung his hands above his head in triumph as he emerged as Pope on to the balcony of St Peter’s eight years ago. He had won! He had longed to be Pope. He has loved being Pope. He expected to die as Pope. (snip) The real reason he has quit is far more spectacular. It is to save the Catholic Church from ignominy: he has voluntarily delivered himself up as a sacrificial lamb to purge the Church of what he calls ‘The Filth’. And it must have taken courage.

Caracas, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who has been out of public view since his December surgery for cancer, is undergoing another round of chemotherapy in a bid to stop the spread of the disease, Vice President Nicolas Maduro said. (Snip) Maduro said the chemotherapy Chavez was receiving is typical for patients after such surgeries. Washington - Fired up as once-unimaginable spending cuts start to slice the federal budget, Republicans are launching a new phase in their austerity campaign — resurrecting the party´s cost-cutting plan to turn Medicare into a voucher-like system for future seniors. Despite public uncertainty Saturday about the $85 billion in so-called sequester cuts, (Snip) Rep. Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, the former Republican vice presidential nominee, is preparing a budget blueprint that aims to balance revenue and spending in 10 years. But his effort has run afoul of the GOP vow not to change Medicare

President Obama, now facing the consequences of automatic spending cuts and the complications they raise for his broader domestic agenda, is taking the most specific steps of his administration in an attempt to ensure the election of a Democraticcontrolled Congress in two years. “What I can’t do is force Congress to do the right thing,” Obama told reporters at the White House on Friday after a fruitless meeting with Republican leaders to avert the country’s latest fiscal crisis, known as the sequester. “The American people may have the capacity to do that.” Obama, fresh off his November

WASHINGTON- It´s not the first time that government economic engineering has produced a time bomb with a short fuse. Back in 2011, few lawmakers, if any, thought deep and indiscriminate spending cuts, totaling about $85 billion and now starting to kick in, were a smart idea. The across-the-board cuts, set up as a last-resort trigger and based on a mechanism used in the 1980s, are a reality largely because President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, failed to find a way to stop them. Republicans, influenced by tea party and other conservative factions, insisted on just

One person described it as the “ultimate nerd sin.” Others didn’t think it’s so bad. But President Barack Obama took heat online for tangling the Jedi mind trick with the Vulcan mind meld. Obama said Friday he didn´t have the power to "somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what´s right" on reaching a deal to avert the forced budget cuts known in Washington as the sequester. The comment came in response to a question from CNN chief White House correspondent Jessica Yellin after the president met with top congressional leaders

President Obama and top administration officials are struggling with accuracy in explaining the impact of billions in federal budget cuts known as sequester that kicked in Saturday morning -- even getting called out by a Capitol Hill superintendent about furloughs for support staffers. Carlos Elias, the Capitol Building superintendent, sent out a memo Friday reminding staffers that the current sequestration plan does not include “reductions in force or furloughs” and that “pay and benefit of each of our employees will not be impacted.” Though not directly mentioning Obama by name,

Insanity. It’s not just a mental illness. It’s also an identity. Men in dresses claim that gender is in the mind, not in the body. If you think you’re a woman, then you are a woman. What used to be a minor form of eccentric insanity has now become educational policy in schools. But why stop at gender when you can also do species? There are people who believe that their true identity is that of an animal. And who is to say that species isn’t in the mind, just like gender is in the mind?

One of the biggest problems in education today is grade inflation and the devaluation of the B grade, according to education expert Wendy Mogel ("The Blessing of a B Minus"). The wine-rating equivalent of a B grade (85-89 points) can mean a wine might be hard to sell or might not show up on certain store shelves, especially when the competition scores 90

Washington -Just hours after across-the-board spending cuts officially took effect, President Barack Obama pressed Congress on Saturday to work with him on a compromise to halt a fiscal crisis that threatens the economy and his broader domestic policy agenda. The failure by Obama and Republicans to agree to halt the $85 billion ´sequester´ cuts virtually guaranteed that fiscal issues would remain center stage in Washington for weeks, crowding out Obama´s proposals to reform immigration, tighten gun laws and raise the minimum wage. The economic effects of the spending cuts may take time to kick in, but political blowback has

Bob Woodward, Lanny Davis and any others with the cojones to speak out against the anti-American policies of the Obama regime should take a page from the book of the savvy Dr. Ben Carson. With the Marxist strategies of the regime, coupled with a complicit media at play, it is a mistake to lay bare plans, or to give any kind of heads up to in-the-tank Obama minions. Don’t show your hands, fellas, use the kind of successful strategy employed by on-the-rise folk hero Ben Carson.

Little Rock — Little Rock may not be a likely terrorism target or a gang crime hotspot, but the Arkansas capital has decided to follow the example of high-security cities by expanding electronic surveillance of its streets. A police car with a device that photographs license plates moves through the city and scans the traffic on the streets, relaying the data it collects to a computer for sifting. Police say the surveillance helps identify stolen cars and drivers with outstanding arrest warrants. It also allows authorities to monitor where average citizens might be at any particular time.

The couple also heeded the wisdom of their own teenagers who gently cautioned them not to make the special effects “lame.” Burnett and Downey understand the potential impact of The Bible, the 10-part series which begins at 8 p.m. EST Sunday. They also grasp how impressionable viewers, particularly teens, could take the project to heart.

London, England - A new wealth tax is being proposed by the leftist wing (The Liberal Democrats) of our coalition government that will come with unprecedented powers to enter our homes and root through our personal possessions to value rings, necklaces, paintings and furniture, anything that might raise more taxes. If we refuse to be inspected or get our own valuations wrong, we would be facing fines, maybe even a jail sentence. This brainchild was conceived by the Lib Dems for their next election manifesto and is part of a series of measures planned to tax the better off.
