Thomasville — The symbolic end of a company that sustained for generations the town for which it was named came neither with a bang nor a whimper. No, it came in the form of the FOR SALE sign that went up in front of the building that once housed Thomasville Furniture Industries global headquarters. For the low, low price of just $2.25 million, a buyer could own 225,000 square feet that includes 7 acres of land, showrooms, office space and a garden courtyard in the middle that ties it all together. Oh, and it also comes with plenty of free parking,

Little Rock — Little Rock may not be a likely terrorism target or a gang crime hotspot, but the Arkansas capital has decided to follow the example of high-security cities by expanding electronic surveillance of its streets. A police car with a device that photographs license plates moves through the city and scans the traffic on the streets, relaying the data it collects to a computer for sifting. Police say the surveillance helps identify stolen cars and drivers with outstanding arrest warrants. It also allows authorities to monitor where average citizens might be at any particular time.

Seattle’s ban on plastic bags may be good for the planet, but some local store owners say it has proven catastrophic for their bottom line. Mike Duke, who runs the Lake City Grocery Outlet grocery store, said that since the City Council unanimously passed the ban last July, he has lost at least $5,000 in shoplifted produce and between $3,000-$4,000 in swiped frozen food. ‘We’ve never lost that much before,’ Duke told KBOI News.(Snip) But according to Duke, the ´green´ canvas totes make it much harder for loss-prevention officers to detect what the customers have purchased and

Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey consulted with a battery of theologians while preparing The History Channel miniseries The Bible. The spiritually strong couple wanted to get every detail right for an adaptation of the most popular book of all time. The couple also heeded the wisdom of their own teenagers who gently cautioned them not to make the special effects “lame.” Burnett and Downey understand the potential impact of The Bible, the 10-part series which begins at 8 p.m. EST Sunday. They also grasp how impressionable viewers, particularly teens, could take the project to heart.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry is also billed in the top category.

London, England - A new wealth tax is being proposed by the leftist wing (The Liberal Democrats) of our coalition government that will come with unprecedented powers to enter our homes and root through our personal possessions to value rings, necklaces, paintings and furniture, anything that might raise more taxes. If we refuse to be inspected or get our own valuations wrong, we would be facing fines, maybe even a jail sentence. This brainchild was conceived by the Lib Dems for their next election manifesto and is part of a series of measures planned to tax the better off.

Denver - A popular hunting shotgun could be banned under one of the bills moving through the state Capitol. A pump or semi-automatic shotgun is the gun most hunters in Colorado use. It’s a gun state Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, says could be banned under a bill that’s already passed the House and Gov. John Hickenlooper says he’ll sign. “They’re coming after the standard shotgun,” Brophy told CBS4 Political Specialist Shaun Boyd. Brophy says if Democrats succeed in passing a bill limiting large capacity magazines in Colorado, they’ll outlaw the most popular selling firearm for hunting.

The Superintendent of Capitol tried to assure staff on Friday that employees will not receive a cut in pay as a result of sequestration, despite President Barack Obama’s claims to the contrary. In a news conference earlier in the day, Obama warned that starting on Saturday “the folks who are cleaning the floors at the Capitol” and “the janitors, the security guards” would face a pay cut. But in a letter to supervisors and building staff, obtained by POLITICO, superintendent Carlos Elias said “the current sequestration plan does NOT include ‘Reductions in Force’ or Furloughs.

The government watchdog group Judicial Watch is suing the Treasury Department for records pertaining to the department’s decision to grant a Chinese government-backed company access to oil deposits in the Gulf of Mexico, a move that will benefit Obama donors. The Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) reached a “definitive agreement” with Nexen, Inc., a Canadian energy company, announced on July 23, 2012, to buy all of the company’s outstanding public shares. Nexen has holdings in the Gulf of Mexico and Canada, giving the Chinese government access to millions of barrels of

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Instead of making a move, Tiger Woods was stuck in neutral Saturday at the Honda Classic. Woods never found his tee shot that plugged into the bank below the par-3 17th green and eventually made double bogey. That ruined a good start and sent him to a third straight round of even-par 70 that left him in the middle of the pack. "If you play well, you can shoot about 5- or 6-under par, there´s no doubt," Woods said. "There are some accessible pins. The greens are perfectly smooth out there. They

There must be some fans of The Walking Dead at the White House and the DNC these days, because there are apparently some bad ideas which never die, no matter how many stakes you drive through them. One of these is the carbon tax, not so subtly invoked during the State of the Union address, and now making a comeback with some of the usual list of suspects in Congress. But this time it may be coming with a twist. You want your Keystone XL pipeline and all of the jobs, opportunity and energy advantages it offers?

Heroic officers likely thwarted

It was a scene that held all the potential for a bloodbath. Two men chose to execute Courtney Jackson on Thursday night, in the middle of the Dudley Square bus station, in front of a bus loaded with ?passengers. That Brian Cooper and Jamel Bannister were captured within minutes after Jackson was shot is a testament to the fearlessness of Boston police officers Wilfredo Coriano, Dominic Columbo, Brian Holmes and Kevin Plunkett. What is more amazing is the fact that the only shot fired in the midst of this chaotic scene was the one that ended Courtney Jackson’s 26-year-old life.

The Democrat style of madcap tax-and-spend waste and fraud is nicely captured by the sad aftermath of this year’s big political convention, as reported by the Charlotte Observer: Duke Energy won’t be repaid the $10 million line of credit it guaranteed for Charlotte to host last year’s Democratic National Convention, the company confirmed Thursday. As the credit line came due, Duke made official what it had signaled to shareholders in an earnings report last November. Because Duke can claim the money as a business expense for tax purposes, shareholders will foot $6 million of the cost.

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court has rejected the state of Alaska’s attempt to remove polar bears from the threatened species list. Friday’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has major implications, because polar bears were the first species to be listed solely on the basis of threats to their survival from global warming. The D.C. appeals court affirmed a lower court ruling supporting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to put polar bears on the federal threatened list.
