Rice dampens rumors

SAN FRANCISCO—Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday signaled that she currently has no plans to run for president in 2016, saying she will continue to stay involved in public service by lending her voice to the immigration debate and efforts to improve the education system in the United States. "I learned that running for office really wasn´t in my DNA when I helped [President] George W. Bush run in 1999. We´d go to maybe five campaign events in a day..and at the end of the day, he was raring to go and

Obama trading Keystone

There must be some fans of The Walking Dead at the White House and the DNC these days, because there are apparently some bad ideas which never die, no matter how many stakes you drive through them. One of these is the carbon tax, not so subtly invoked during the State of the Union address, and now making a comeback with some of the usual list of suspects in Congress. But this time it may be coming with a twist. You want your Keystone XL pipeline and all of the jobs, opportunity and energy advantages it offers?

Heroic officers likely thwarted

It was a scene that held all the potential for a bloodbath. Two men chose to execute Courtney Jackson on Thursday night, in the middle of the Dudley Square bus station, in front of a bus loaded with ?passengers. That Brian Cooper and Jamel Bannister were captured within minutes after Jackson was shot is a testament to the fearlessness of Boston police officers Wilfredo Coriano, Dominic Columbo, Brian Holmes and Kevin Plunkett. What is more amazing is the fact that the only shot fired in the midst of this chaotic scene was the one that ended Courtney Jackson’s 26-year-old life.

Duke Energy soaks shareholders to

The Democrat style of madcap tax-and-spend waste and fraud is nicely captured by the sad aftermath of this year’s big political convention, as reported by the Charlotte Observer: Duke Energy won’t be repaid the $10 million line of credit it guaranteed for Charlotte to host last year’s Democratic National Convention, the company confirmed Thursday. As the credit line came due, Duke made official what it had signaled to shareholders in an earnings report last November. Because Duke can claim the money as a business expense for tax purposes, shareholders will foot $6 million of the cost.

Theses days, little Kayden is eating like a champ, but a few weeks ago he was malnourished and fighting for his life. "I was scared out of my mind, I was scared out of my mind about his not getting enough," said Kayden´s mother, Cierra Kelley. "He was two days old when I took him to the hospital. He was only two days old, I didn´t know what was going on. So he went to see a lactation specialist at Piedmont health."The lactation specialist is just one of the services available through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

Chocola: Rove only cares

Club for Growth President Chris Chocola charged that Republican establishment figure Karl Rove cares more about the Republican brand than Republican "core beliefs." "What Karl Rove and some of the establishment groups only care about is the brand," he said during an appearance on CBS´ "Face to Face." "They only care if someone´s a Republican or not. They don´t really care what their core beliefs are. I think voters actually care what their core beliefs are." Rove and Chocola are expected to butt heads in 2014 over a number of upcoming House and Senate races,

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court has rejected the state of Alaska’s attempt to remove polar bears from the threatened species list. Friday’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has major implications, because polar bears were the first species to be listed solely on the basis of threats to their survival from global warming. The D.C. appeals court affirmed a lower court ruling supporting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to put polar bears on the federal threatened list.

SEFFNER, Fla.- The effort to recover a Florida man´s body from a sinkhole that opened up beneath his bedroom resumed Saturday morning, officials said. Jeff Bush, 37, was in his bedroom Thursday night when the sinkhole opened up and trapped him underneath his house, CNN reported. Rescue workers left the site Friday night, saying the hole is still expanding and the house could collapse at any time. "Until we know where it´s safe to bring the equipment, we really are just handicapped and paralyzed, and can´t really do a whole lot more than sit and wait,"

Left Tries To Divide Conservatives

In the soul-searching saga that has followed Mitt Romney’s defeat in November, some leading Republicans claim that to stave off political oblivion the GOP must wholeheartedly embrace comprehensive immigration reform including amnesty for those illegal aliens already in the country. This is wishful thinking, of course. According to various studies including a Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) report, pandering to Latino voters will not gain the Republican Party Hispanic-American votes. Latinos are particularly hard to win over to the Republican side because they tend to be

Lobbying giant Patton Boggs has laid off 65 lawyers and staff, including 23 from its Washington, D.C. practice, according to multiple reports. The firm´s revenue and net profits had fallen between 2011 and 2012. Lobbying revenue declined five percent from $48.4 to $46 million, according to calculations by The Hill. The layoffs are an attempt to "align head count with revenue," managing partner Edward Newberry told the Wall Street Journal. "We´re trying to be very disciplined in managing expense and operations," Newberry said. The move responds to increasing market pressure and is expected

Rory McIlroy’s already bad ear just got worse Much worse. Golf’s boy wonder did the inexcusable on Friday, borrowing from the worst of John Daly’s sorry repertoire and quitting mid-round at the Honda Classic. After walking off PGA National, where he was defending champion, the world No. 1 gave reporters a less-than-satisfactory explanation for his early departure. “I can´t really say much, guys. I´m just in a bad place mentally,” he said. Of course, not many professional golfers would be in a good place, mentally or otherwise, after playing eight holes in seven strokes over par.

Gay marriage advocates are touting the number of Republicans — more than 130 at the moment — who have signed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn California’s popularly-approved ban on same-sex marriage. With a few exceptions, the list is made up of former office holders, many appointed rather than elected, plus various strategists and donors. One notable thing about the brief is that the list of signers includes several top officials from the Romney presidential campaign. Mitt Romney strongly opposed gay marriage during the 2012 race. Do we have a president or a perpetual candidate? It´s not an entirely unfair question. Even as Barack Obama was warning of the dreadful consequences of the budget sequester looming on March 1, he spent days away from Washington, apparently out of touch with Democratic as well as Republican congressional leaders. In the meantime, Obama fans were lobbing verbal grenades at none other than the Washington Post´s Bob Woodward. His offense: He´s continuing to make it clear, as he did in his book "The Price of Politics," that it was Obama´s then-chief of staff and now Treasury Secretary

Is Barack Obama the Vladimir Lenin of American Presidents? No, Lenin was competent in an evil sort of way. Obama is more like Leonid Brezhnev: an ultra left-wing, belligerent doofus who isn´t laughed at by the general population primarily because the mainstream media liberals say nice things about him out of fear that they´ll end up in a gulag if they´re too harsh. Of course, we don´t have gulags, but reporters who criticize Obama would be snubbed by their peers at cocktail parties in Manhattan and Old Town, which seems almost as bad to liberals.

Meet Mayor Bloomberg, diet guru. Only you´re probably not going to like his advice for losing weight -- just eat less. "If you eat less than 2,000 calories you´ll lose weight," the mayor said on his weekly WOR radio show today. "If you eat more than 2,000 calories, you´ll gain weight. Now some things metabolize more quickly than others. And everyone says I should go on this kind of diet or that kind of diet. Don´t eat and you´ll lose weight." Exercise, by Bloomberg´s reckoning, is not a substitute for reducing intake.

Thirteen years ago, researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum began the grim task of documenting all the ghettos, slave labor sites, concentration camps and killing factories that the Nazis set up throughout Europe. What they have found so far has shocked even scholars steeped in the history of the Holocaust. The researchers have cataloged some 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps throughout Europe, spanning German-controlled areas from France to Russia and Germany itself, during Hitler’s reign of brutality from 1933 to 1945. The figure is so staggering that even fellow Holocaust
