The Senate Judiciary Committee was expected to take up several gun control measures today and mark up final legislation. The Committee, however, has put off action for at least week. The principal reason for the delay is to allow more talks on a possible compromise over the issue of background checks. For the past several weeks, Sens. Schumer, Manchin, Coburn and Kirk worked to finalize a bi-partisan compromise to expand background checks on private gun sales. The chief obstacle to a deal is the question of giving federal authorities the ability to collect records of private gun sales. Conservatives fear

The new head of NARAL Pro-Choice America is ready to redefine “choice.” It’s the right to end a pregnancy — and the right to start one, including access to pricey fertility treatment. Once a baby is born, parents should have paid family leave to take care of them. (Snip) “It’s not like the definition of choice 40 years ago necessarily is the same definition. It will always be access to safe and legal abortion. … But that’s the beginning of the conversation; that’s not the end of the conversation.” That doesn’t mean abortion isn’t central to her mission.

The White House is coming under pressure from liberal Democrats in the House and Senate to press for a minimum wage hike as high as $10.10. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) argues President Obama “missed the mark” in calling to raise the minimum wage to $9 in his State of the Union address, and his staff met with White House staff last week to argue for a higher number. The veteran senator, who will retire at the end of this Congress, is working with Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) on legislation that would

The White House on Thursday threatened to veto the Senate Republican sequester bill in the unlikely event it passes Congress. “If the President were presented with S. 16, his senior advisors would recommend that he veto the bill,” the White House said. The Senate GOP bill, sponsored by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), would give the administration added power to determine how to implement the $85 billion in spending cuts, known as the sequester, set to take effect Friday. “The Administration strongly opposes S. 16, which would protect tax loopholes for the wealthy

The White House repeatedly asked Ben Carson for his speech before the rising Republican star criticized President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast earlier this month. Carson, a prominent neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University, declined to do so, noting that he doesn’t put his speeches down on paper beforehand. “I told them that I don’t have an advance copy because I don’t write out my speeches and I don’t use teleprompters …they asked more than once ...I gave them the [Biblical] texts around which the remarks would be framed ...

Cops were called to Holy Cross Church in St Helens, Merseyside, on Saturday evening following reports that the men were brawling inside. One eyewitness said: "There looked to be around 40 of them running riot. "Police had to stop the mass because they were fighting. Quite a few elderly people were upset. The men seemed to be speaking a foreign language. "Most of the elderly people went out through a side door, while the fighting carried on in Parade Street." Police found one man with a cut to his head, but he refused medical attention. They confirmed

Back last year when I was columnizing for the Rolling Stone website, I started explaining to the rest of the country what Rahm Emanuel’s tenure as mayor of Chicago felt like on the ground here in my hometown—and not, say, from the rarified altitude of national mainstream publications who treated the half-baked, potentially self-dealing ideas he rammed through a Kremlin-like City Council as if emanations from some sort of public policy Nirvana; unquestioningly took the mayor at his word even in his most pie-in-the-sky, pot-of-gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow pronouncements; and fawned over him as some sort of new-breed reformer because,

The polls tells us that New Jerseyans love Gov. Chris Christie, even though they disagree with him on a range of issues, from the minimum wage to gay marriage. One reason is that he is not a bobblehead partisan who spouts the predictable lines every time his button is pushed. This man speaks his mind. We saw that when he went after House Speaker John Boehner in defense of the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Boehner, a fellow Republican, had delayed the vote on relief, 10 weeks after the storm, and then wouldn’t return calls. The governor went ballistic.

Dennis Rodman has done some crazy things in his day, but if reports coming out of North Korea are true, he may have just topped them all. Rodman, who is in North Korea as part of an HBO documentary on "basketball diplomacy," watched a basketball game in Pyongyang with North Korea´s leader, Kim Jong Un, on Thursday. According to a spokesman for the film crew, Rodman told Kim that “You have a friend for life.” Rodman and Kim talked as they watched players from North Korea and the U.S. play on mixed teams, Alex Detrick,

Bye bye Walter Cronkite, Brian Williams and Scott Pelley. Hello Google, Yahoo and Drudge. A new Rasmussen Reports poll finds that traditional network news continues to fall as the nation´s source for news. The internet now is a bigger source of news for Americans than network TV, by a point, 25 percent to 24 percent. Cable TV is still king, with 32 percent of the 1,000 likely voters Rasmussen polled getting their news from that source. Newspapers barely register a 10 percent, and radio is the source of news for 7 percent of the country.

We don´t really know how they´re going to act. I think it´s laughable to assume they are going to show up under this alternate status, you know, and act like good citizens. Here are people who on multiple occasions have cross the border. Which means every time they are deported across

As we reported on Tuesday, eclectic former basketball star Dennis Rodman visited North Korea as part of a VICE series on the NBA wildman and members of the Harlem Globetrotters running a basketball camp for local youth. As it turns out, Rodman also got to meet with the nation’s “Supreme Leader” (read: dictator) Kim Jong-un, and reportedly told him: “You have a friend for life.” Rodman apparently made the comment before a crowd of thousands, after sitting and chatting with Kim during an exhibition game between two mixed teams in Pyongyang.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict left the Vatican on Thursday after pledging unconditional obedience to whoever succeeds him to guide the Roman Catholic Church at one of the most crisis-ridden periods in its 2,000-year history. The US soldier accused of leaking large amounts of secret data to Wikileaks has pleaded guilty to a series of 10 lesser charges, US media report. But Pfc Bradley Manning, 25, may still be prosecuted for the most serious charge against him, aiding the enemy. A military judge will now decide whether to accept the guilty plea, and will allow him to read a statement. Pfc Manning last spoke in court in November about his treatment in Kuwait and in the US after his arrest. He described being locked up alone for 23 hours a day in a small cell

Concerns about the environment have reached a two-decade low since the start of the financial crisis, a global survey has revealed. Fewer people now consider pollution, species loss and fresh water shortages to be ´very serious´ problems than at any time since tracking began 20 years ago. Fears over global warming are far lower than they were between 20003 and 2008, with less than one person in two regarding it as ´very serious´. Concern about air and water pollution, as well as biodiversity, is significantly below where it was even in the Nineties, found the poll of more than 22,000

So Bob Woodward says he was threatened by …. Gene Sperling. I guess I’m just off the reservation on this whole thing. Now, I think Woodward’s reporting is trustworthy — on this (I don’t always take his version of events as gospel. See Bill Casey’s deathbed confession). But the “threat” thing strikes me as exaggerated. I expressed this view last night on twitter and a lot of friends on the right leapt to defend Woodward’s interpretation. “He’s been around, he knows what a threat looks like” seemed to be the general attitude.

NOTE: This post will be continually updated… Also, I´m not including open partisans in this list, like Josh Marshal of Talking Points Memo. Those listed below pose as "objective" journalists. The media stands by its own, at least until one of its own upsets The Narrative. Not even a living legend is immune from this rule. In the case of Bob Woodward, his detailed and lengthy reporting on sequester has resulted in the possible derailing of the most crucial Narrative the White House and media are likely to launch this year.

Organizing for Action, the purported "issues advocacy" social welfare organization established in January, sent out a campaign-style email on Wednesday to an extensive email list of Obama supporters developed by its predecessor organization, the Obama for America presidential campaign committee, attacking congressional Republicans. The email pushes the boundaries of the standard that defines allowable communications that can be sent out by "issues advocacy" social welfare non-profit groups organized under Section 501(c)4 of the Internal Revenue code. In effect, Wednesday´s OFA email constitutes one of the first campaign

After reviewing new information released by the White House on Feb. 26--information intended to put some distance between CIA Director nominee John Brennan and the Benghazi attacks--many Republican Senators are now persuaded that Brennan may have had a role in crafting the talking points to describe Benghazi as a protest gone bad. After seeing the information, Senate Intelligence Committee Vice-Chairman Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) said simply: "Brennan was involved." And Senator James Risch (R-ID), said the new information "did not alleviate [his] concerns" in the slightest. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Susan Collins (R-ME) both expressed similar concerns.

Breitbart News has learned exclusively that Clint Eastwood has signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, supporting the right of same-sex couples to marry. The brief, which will be released later this evening, has signatures from more than 100 Republican and conservative activists. It involves the case before the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn CA´s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state. A well-placed GOP source provided Breitbart News with an early glimpse of the brief. Whether same-sex couples should have access to civil marriage divides thoughtful, concerned citizens.

First Lady Michelle Obama is continuing her road trip celebrating the 3rd anniversary of her “Let´s Move” initiative, appearing on Good Morning America with Robin Roberts on Tuesday and at an event with Rachael Ray on Wednesday. The initial press release last week gave “Let´s Move” credit for halting and even reversing the childhood obesity trend of the last thirty years, though the White House did not provide data to back up its claim. Now, a new White House press release links to a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report to bolster its claims, but

Late Wednesday, the Obama administration awarded an aviation contract to Brazil-based Embraer. The contract is for a fleet of Light Air Support (LAS) aircraft that will be used by the nascent Afghan air force in its fight against the Taliban. Two firms vied for the contract, Embraer and Hawker Beechcraft, which is based in Wichita, KS. The contracting process was plagued with bias against Hawker, which has yet to be accounted for or explained. The Obama administration’s decision sends most of the 1,400 jobs the contract will create out of the United States to Brazil, and to
