Yamoussoukro - Chad´s President Idriss Deby appealed to West African leaders on Wednesday to urgently speed up deployment of their forces to northern Mali where Chadian and French forces are locked in bitter fighting with al Qaeda-linked rebels.(Snip) Regional heavyweight Nigeria has deployed some 1,200 soldiers in a bid to snuff out links between the alliance of Islamist groups in Mali, which includes al Qaeda´s north African wing AQIM, and its home-grown Boko Haram militant movement. But most African units remain in southern Mali, leaving French and Chadian forces responsible for security in the recaptured northern towns

Many conservatives and Republicans are greeting the looming sequestration spending cuts with a collective yawn. "The much-ballyhooed ´sequester´ is a cut of $85 billion in a nearly $4 trillion federal budget. Good, let’s do it," writes one contributor to National Review Online´s symposium on sequestration. It´s true that sequestration is a tiny cut to total federal spending. But it is also true that sequestration is a major cut to defense spending. According to the House Armed Services Committee, the 2011 Budget Control Act (the law that imposed both

Reaching up to an extraordinary 23ft in length, they are one of the largest living fish and have developed skeletons of cartilage rather than bone. It was almost inevitable. The American Conservative Union has announced that Dr. Ben Carson will be a featured speaker at CPAC 2013 - the 40th annual Conservative Political Action Conference in mid-March. “Dr. Ben Carson represents the optimism and hope of the future of the conservative movement, while at the same time he articulates the deep fiscal and social challenges that our nation faces,” says chairman Al Cardenas. Dr. Carson, director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, has been on conservative radar plenty since his straightforward speech about the state of America

RUSH: You know, this really is unprecedented. It´s not getting any attention. It´s not getting any commentary whatsoever. It´s barely even being reported. But, I mean, this is serious stuff. The president of the United States has opened up the jails. The president of the United States, because of budget cuts which have not happened yet, has released 500 or so illegal immigrants, and, by definition, of law, they are criminals. We mentioned this late in the program yesterday. Hundreds of illegal alien

Pulling the Plug on Federal Agencies´ TVs

Back in the 1980s, a friend of mine was laid off from a defense contractor. That night he unplugged the cable box to his TV — to send his family a message that things were going to be tough for a while. I suggest that, especially in light of the sequester, the federal government follow my friend’s example and get busy pulling the plug on unnecessary televisions and cable TV contracts.

But after four years of focusing on the body, she’d do well to spend these next four on building strong minds.´´ Milloy says there´s been too much attention paid to Michelle´s body (her arms, bangs, designer clothes), and not enough attention paid to her ivy league education: "Where is that intellectually gifted Princeton graduate, the Harvard-educated lawyer and mentor

"A Democratic group is under sharp criticism for controversial online messages about Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell´s wife," reports WFPL-FM, an NPR station in Louisville, Ky. For months Progress Kentucky, a liberal super PAC, has been stalking McConnell, the Bluegrass State´s senior senator, holding "demonstrations at his offices and home." But the attack on Mrs. McConnell, who in public goes by her maiden name of Elaine Chao, took place on Twitter. The station quotes a Progress Kentucky tweet dated Feb. 14: "This woman has the ear of (Sen. McConnell)—she´s his wife.

The descriptions of the post-sequester landscape that have been coming out of the Obama Administration have been alarming, specific--and, in at least some cases, hyped. “There are literally teachers now who are getting pink slips, who are getting notices that they can’t come back this fall,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” When he was pressed in a White House briefing Wednesday to come up with an example, Duncan named a single county in West Virginia and acknowledged, “whether it’s all sequester-related, I don’t know.”

But given how much attention Sarah Palin´s latest Facebook post has gotten, it´s probably worth the two minutes it takes to debunk one of its more outlandish claims—especially given the conspiracy theory was already debunked before she even wrote about it. Sarah Palin says America will eventually default on its debt and claims that the federal government is “stockpiling bullets in case of civil unrest” to prepare. “If we are going to wet our proverbial pants over 0.3% in annual spending cuts when we’re running up trillion dollar annual deficits, then we’re done. Put a fork in us. We’re finished. We’re going to default eventually and that’s why the feds are stockpiling bullets in case of civil unrest,” Palin wrote in a Facebook message Tuesday. For the past several years, congressional Republicans have focused relentlessly on a single message: Washington — led by President Obama — is spending too much money, and it needs to stop. But according to new Washington Post-ABC News polling, that laser-like focus isn’t helping Republicans win the argument over federal spending — with 67 percent of those tested disapproving of the “way Republicans in Congress are handling federal spending.”

Demographics are destiny. Nothing else makes history. When the changes ahead are shipped into denial is when chaos and disaster ensue. And the potential disasters America faces today do not come from global warming, nuclear weapons, the Russians, the hippies or the rednecks. They come from the economic division of America between the red states, which are rising in capital and prosperity, and the left and right coasts, which are receding in economic power. Demographer Joel Kotkin well outlines the transition in a Wall Street Journal essay yesterday title, “America’s Red State Growth Corridors.”

The Hub’s top earner in 2012 is a grade school teacher who once said she had the “urge to kill” her boss, comments school officials used to fire her and later, paid for — to the tune of nearly $400,000 in back pay after a judge ruled they had no grounds to boot her. Teresa D. Underwood topped the city’s payroll last year with $427,522.71, an eye-popping number that dwarfed the next highest earner — Superintendent Carol R. Johnson — by more than $100,000. Former Boston Latin teacher Jonathan Bonds filled out the top three with $318,158 in pay,

Spring Break chaos has arrived early in Mexico´s Cancun this year with American college students already beginning their revelry across the resort. Hundreds of students have been pictured starting the party early in the Mexican city today, drinking heavily and dancing the night away with marines on patrol to ensure no one gets too carried away. This year Cancun was found to be the number one destination for students looking to enjoy the typically wild week-long holiday which doesn´t usually get going until March. However, some college students were out in force last night drinking and partying

Chilean government slashes fuel

Finance Minister Felipe Larraín confirmed Tuesday that the government would significantly drop the gas tax this week via its Sipco mechanism, which reduces fuel taxes when gas prices spike strongly. The announcement will come as welcome news to Chilean motorists, who have seen the price of regular 93-octane fuel rise nearly 9.9 percent from US$5.41 per gallon in November to US$5.95 per gallon last week. The Sipco requires gas prices to rise 10 percent over a period of one month to a year in order for the tax rebate to kick in.

Today, White House Spokesman Jay Carney asked during a press briefing what Congressman Mike Pompeo, R-Kansas, would say to defense workers facing furlough because of the President’s sequester plan. WASHINGTON — Only days before the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman was due to leave Norfolk, Va., for the Persian Gulf this month, the Pentagon abruptly canceled the deployment, pleading poverty. With cuts in the federal budget scheduled to take effect Friday, Pentagon officials said they feared that sending the carrier on a six-month cruise to the Middle East would empty their operations accounts. President Obama on Tuesday alluded to the decision to hold back the Truman. "The threat of these cuts has forced the Navy to cancel the deployment," he said in a speech in southeastern Virginia,
