Comptroller John Liu has blasted a major city contractor for allegedly cheating taxpayers of $163 million — but that wasn’t enough to stop Liu’s office from quietly doing business with the same firm, The Post has learned. Liu excoriated the Bloomberg administration last year for allowing overbilling in its $2 billion-plus contract with Hewlett-Packard for the massive 911 call center project, and he recently threatened to reject future contracts with the company — all while quietly inking his own deal with HP. Two months after issuing a searing audit charging HP with $163 million in overbilling, Liu awarded the company

President Obama’s nominee to lead the Treasury Department, Jacob J. Lew, got a $685,000 severance payment when he left a top post at New York University in 2006 to take a job at Citigroup. The payment, which a university official acknowledged on Monday, is considered unusual by outside experts in benefits and raises questions about why a tax-exempt university would give a large exit bonus to an executive who was departing voluntarily. (Snip) He had typically earned $700,000 to $800,000 a year since his hiring in 2001, and sometimes more, according to the university’s tax records.

To hear President Obama talk about the so-called budget cuts known as sequestration, his two-year-old idea of those required slashes in federal spending didn´t turn out to be such a good idea after all. As usual with President Obama, however, the failure of his own plan is not his fault. The president, his Cabinet secretaries and his press secretary are describing a veritable fiscal Armageddon for the country if the cuts he proposed in 2011 start taking effect on Friday.

He may be dealing with gun legislation, immigration reform and massive budget cuts at work, but President Obama is also struggling with a crisis at home: his two daughters growing up. Michelle Obama has revealed that her husband is still learning to cope with watching his daughters, 14-year-old Malia and 11-year-old Sasha, become teenagers. ´There´s nothing like the look on his face when Malia dresses up for a party, and she´s heading out,´ Mrs Obama said in an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. ´She walks past him, and you can see his face sort of just drop

WASHINGTON — Dozens of prominent Republicans — including top advisers to former President George W. Bush, four former governors and two members of Congress — have signed a legal brief arguing that gay people have a constitutional right to marry, a position that amounts to a direct challenge to Speaker John A. Boehner and reflects the civil war in the party since the November election. The document will be submitted this week to the Supreme Court in support of a suit seeking to strike down Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative barring same-sex

Blimey, I´m up for a prize--my first ever Bloggie award nomination. I´d be so pleased if I won because, unlike most journalistic awards, the Bloggies aren´t decided by a cabal of pinkos and unimaginative, career-safe lametards from the decaying, dead-tree establishment but by the only people who really matter--you the readers. See that subtle, sucking-up thing I did there?[Snip]Without your vote I don´t win a prize. President Obama’s transparent mendacity about his responsibility for the sequester is revealing. The obtuse Chuck Todd doesn’t think it’s a story; he characterizes it as a traditionally sterile argument about who is to blame for the unpleasantness (which is the way the New York Times treats the issue it when it deigns to touch it). Todd can’t be that stupid, can he? True, it would be nice to know how we got here. Thanks to Bob Woodward — the establishment reporter at DC’s establishment newspaper — we know definitively how we got here. No thanks to Chuck Todd.

To read most conservative websites you´d have to believe that Hollywood is the holy mecca of liberal hypocrisy, a swarming hive of limousine liberals, and the indulgence capital of the world. And I do happen to believe the truth of that, an assessment arrived at decades ago and acted upon by my absolute absence in movie theaters for those same decades. For conservatives, going to the movies long ago became a form of self-flagellation where one pays exorbitant prices for admission and confections

Warning: this blog post does not tackle the big issues of the week. But it is about one of life´s recurring frustrations. Printers. Guardian Money reported yesterday how printing companies are screwing consumers with smaller cartridges. Measure-for-measure, ink is now more expensive than vintage champagne. Hewlett Packard cartridges, for example, are five times worse value than a decade ago. The other manufacturers are just as bad, making cartridges smaller and harder to refill. They´ve got ink on their hands. Epson say the technology is more efficient now, meaning it´s better value. They´re efficient all right, when they work.

According to TV critic David Zurawik, MSNBC´s hiring of ex-Obama officials David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs makes the so-callend news network almost "a bona fide organ of state propaganda." Hours after this was published Monday, Hardball´s Chris Matthews offered his services to Hillary Clinton - along with those of MSNBC contributors Howard Fineman and Joan Walsh - in order to get her elected president in 2016 (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary): At the end of a lengthy discussion about Clinton´s chances in 2016 - never mind that Election Day is 44 months away!

Sequester: If you want to know how misleading the Obama administration is being about the effects of the sequester, look no further than Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood´s dark warnings about flight delays. LaHood showed up at the daily White House press briefing Friday to claim the sequester — automatic spending cuts President Obama insisted on that are now scheduled to take effect in March — will "be very painful for the flying public." [snip] But LaHood, taking his cues from Obama, is needlessly trying to panic the public.

Despite what the president may say when the Day of Reckoning finally arrives, he is ultimately responsible for what is likely to take place. Unbeknownst to most Americans and despite the fact that inflation at the grocery store and at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll, the simple fact that the dollar is the global reserve currency has protected U.S. citizens from the kind of commodity price increases that set off the Arab Spring in Tunisia. But things are beginning to change rapidly. Iran is moving ahead with its plan to trade oil

This just in from our Republican Insider, who has been very busy of late regarding the impending sequestration conflict that is being played out 24/7 by the Mainstream Media and the Obama White House. (Snip) Word of that compromise got out and reached the White House. I am guessing it was someone working for Reid who relayed that information. Regardless, it was the very next day that a staffer for one of the Senators working the compromise deal received word from Legislative Affairs to not under any circumstances continue to produce a compromise, or publicize any such deal.

It is an orchestrated rollout with all the precision of a presidential campaign. Another day, another warning of the calamity to come.In an effort to pressure the GOP to avert the automatic spending cuts slated for Friday, the Obama administration is dribbling out the painful details. And some Republicans are accusing the White House of exaggerating the sequester’s impact for partisan reasons. Former Mississippi governor Haley Barbour told me that Obama is “crying wolf.”

MSNBC has long been as bad as Fox News when it comes to ideological bias. But with the hiring of longtime Team Obama loyalists David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs, it’s official: MSNBC is worse. The cable channel that flies under the banner of NBC News is now all but a bona fide organ of state propaganda, an information channel that speaks in the same dominant voice as the folks running the government–and tries to mask what it is up to.

Here is one thing that Obama should do to elevate America’s public discourse: Stop lying. Obama has been caught red-handed lying about the sequester, the $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that commence Friday, unless Congress panics and scuttles this 2.4 percent reduction in Washington’s heroin-strength spending addiction. “The sequester is not something that I’ve proposed,” Obama said in his October 22, 2012, debate with GOP nominee Mitt Romney. “It is something that Congress has proposed.” “Congress didn’t compromise,” Obama whined on February 19

Almost daily we witness things that make no sense. A few examples, from the profound to the trivial.Rich Without Being Rich-The president, as is his wont, blasted the “one percent,” the “millionaires and billionaires,” and the “well-connected” in his recent State of the Union speech — and then he flew off to golf and hang out with the one percent of the one percent in South Florida while his wife and kids jetted to Aspen to ski. Then Obama flew back for more class-warfare rhetoric over so-called sequestration, ridiculing the Republicans as again being for the “rich”

A sharply divided Senate is scheduled to cast a final vote on the contested nomination of secretary of defense nominee Chuck Hagel Tuesday, ending a months-long battle that has centered on the nominee’s controversial past statements. Hagel, a former Republican Nebraska senator, faced criticism from Republicans and some Democrats immediately following his nomination by the president last month. Critics have accused Hagel of being anti-Semitic, overtly hostile to Israel, and cozy with Iran’s ruling regime, which has endorsed him.

In The K-12 Implosion, an Encounter books "broadside", I suggest that public education may be in trouble. (Snip) It seems that teachers -- overwhelmingly female -- just might be prejudiced against boys and it´s hurting their grades. Stereotyped as "naughty," boys quickly learn that they are thought of as dumber and more trouble than girls. And that has consequences. "When boys aged seven to eight were told that they tend to do worse at school than girls, they scored more poorly in reading, writing and mathematics tests than those who were not primed for failure.

During President Barack Obama´s meeting with U.S. governors at the White House Monday, the president dismissed members of the press to hold a private, hourlong discussion with the visiting state executives. Whatever was said after the cameras left the room especially incensed South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley. (Snip) She said that when she asked Obama if he would consider a last-minute plan to shave about 2 percent from the annual federal budget without increasing taxes, the answer was "no." "My kids could go and find $83 billion out of a $4 trillion budget," Haley said. "This is not
