Silicon Valley investors that helped build the solar industry are shifting cash into electricity-grid technology and energy-storage developers after bets on panel manufacturers failed to pay off. Companies including VantagePoint Capital Partners and Khosla Ventures are stepping up funding for systems to manage electricity, which are typically less capital intensive than solar-panel factories. Venture capital and private-equity financing for renewables dropped to its lowest in at least six years in 2012, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.(Snip) Investment flowing from private equity and venture capital firms into renewable energy fell 34 percent to $5.75 billion last

Raleigh, N.C. — A strategy memo circulated recently among liberal-leaning groups prescribes "crippling" legislative leaders and Gov. Pat McCrory with bad press and pressure tactics. The memo, which was first reported by The Charlotte Observer, details communications strategy, political tactics and polling data that progressive groups can use to push the policy agenda in Raleigh, where Republicans control both the governor´s mansion and the legislature. According to documents included with the memo and interviews, the strategy outline was produced by Myers Research and Strategic Services for Project New America. It was originally provided to Progress North Carolina, a liberal nonprofit

Why is Wal-Mart worried?
Payroll tax could cut

NEW YORK Retailers are preparing for a triple whammy as the restoration of the payroll tax, surging gas prices, and stagnant employment and wages take a bite out of consumers’ disposable income, leaving them with less cash to spend on clothing, groceries, and eating out. As a result, more than three years after the recession officially ended, American consumers might be preparing to downshift again, if only slightly, with low-income consumers hit the hardest. Sensing consumer trepidation, retailers are scrambling to adjust. Retailers, restaurants, and consumer goods companies like Wal-Mart are lowering sales forecasts

Republicans do badly with young voters, and one of the main reasons is that they’re seen as uncool. This is probably unfair — it’s not Republicans who are imposing college speech codes on students — but it’s the perception. As a reader of my blog named Jeff Wimble wrote: “Everything comes down to the movie ‘Footloose.’ For a large majority of people, the political question is, ‘How would the sanctimonious preacher from the movie ‘Footloose’ feel about this subject?’ They answer the question, and then take the opposite position.

At a Friday event billed as a Black History Month press conference, Star Parker said African Americans in Congress who support gun control efforts by President Barack Obama and his administration should consider the history of blacks in this country and people around the globe who were oppressed, including being banned from owning firearms. CNSNews.com asked Parker, who is the founder and president of the Center for Urban Renewal and Education (CURE): “There are a lot of African Americans and people of color in Congress who are backing Obama’s plan for gun control.

A top Republican lawmaker countered warnings about the purportedly devastating impact of looming budget cuts, calling on the administration to lessen the blow by taking two simple steps -- stop hiring, and stop traveling. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., in a letter to the White House budget office, called Monday for a "hiring freeze" on non-essential positions. He pointed out that, amid pronouncements about the dire impact of spending cuts poised to hit starting this Friday, the administration is still advertising for a host of "lower priority jobs" -- like a staff assistant to answer phones

The whole thing began, as many cryptic scandals do, with an apparently innocuous phone call. In the spring of 2011, a friend that Gianluigi Nuzzi hadn´t heard from in quite some time asked to meet for coffee in Milan. Nuzzi´s friend didn´t work in journalism, which is Nuzzi´s business, and he didn´t mention that he might have the seeds of a story. At the café they exchanged pleasantries, caught up.

The department is expected to unload its approximately 300 million shares on the open market by the end of 2014. It plans to do so gradually, using a trading plan that has not been made public so that hedge funds cannot corner the market, The Detroit News reported Monday. In January, it sold about 5.4 million shares for $27.61 to $29.16 per share, the News reported. The department, at one point, expected to lose $44 billion in bailouts

Last week President Obama announced he will finally visit Israel. But there’s no guarantee that it will be a pleasant trip. (Snip)Comparisons will inevitably be drawn between Obama’s 2009 trip to Cairo and his impending one to Jerusalem. His fanciful Cairo speech—delivered with no evident recognition that each and every one of the Arab countries was at that moment on the precipice of chaos—was a shoddy and slippery job, historically so misleading on so many matters that one can hardly attribute it to innocent error.

A federal prosecutor came in for some biting criticism today from Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Stephen Breyer for a racially charged remark made during a criminal trial. The comment by the justices came as the court declined to hear the appeal of a man who was convicted in a Texas federal court of being in on a drug conspiracy. The issue for the defendant, Bongani Charles Calhoun, was whether he knew that the people he accompanied on a road trip were about to buy illegal drugs, or whether he was merely along for the ride.

Gas prices continue to go in the wrong direction. Atlantans were paying an average of $3.79 a gallon for gasoline early Monday, an increase of nearly a dime since a week ago and 67 cents more than the mid-December price. The current national average price is $3.78, and the national average for the month of $3.63 is the highest ever for the month of February, according to AAA. The average has surpassed $4 a gallon in four states, “and a couple others are only a few cents shy of reaching the $4 mark,” said Jessica Brady, a spokeswoman for AAA.

Allowing the $85 billion sequester to go forward will make the United States more vulnerable to a terrorist attack, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday. Napolitano added that the blunt nature of the $85 billion in automatic spending cuts set for March 1 “makes it awfully, awfully tough” to mitigate threats faced by the nation. “I don´t think we can maintain the same level of security at all places around the country with sequester compared to without sequester,” said Napolitano, whose agency includes the Transportation Security Administration.

At the beginning of the year, President Barack Obama´s new 501(c)4 political nonprofit, Organizing For Action, was launched with all the usual bells and whistles. But the tech wizards at OFA forgot one important rule in today´s Internet world: Register all the iterations of your website address before someone else does. Now Obama´s team is filing complaints against the folks smart enough to get the addresses before he did. As Obama´s OFA made its debut, no one in his purportedly Internet-savvy campaign had obtained the corresponding .com, .net, .org or .us sites,

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said Sunday that the sequester could cut millions of dollars in healthcare research in New York, which she said would lead to both job cuts in her state and less research into life-saving medical technologies. "I urge House leadership to avoid triggering a sequestration of federal funding that will impose draconian cuts to the research and development programs that are our hope for the future," Maloney said Sunday. "I am determined to join colleagues in both parties and both houses of Congress to prevent our nation from being forced into this entirely manufactured fiscal crisis."

Right now, the White House, the leaders in the Senate and the House of Representatives are in negotiations.” Warren called the $85 billion in automatic cuts

A Texas Republican on Monday said President Obama´s gun control campaign is a fraud based on fake messages over Twitter. Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) accused Obama of trying to make support for his position look stronger than it really is by flooding Twitter with messages from people who don´t exist. "Obama´s anti-gun campaign is a fraud," Stockman said. "Obama´s supporters are panicking and willing to do anything to create the appearance of popular support, even if it means trying to defraud Congress," he added. This week’s upcoming vote to confirm Chuck Hagel as Defense secretary feels joyless and anti-climatic. After a poor performance during his Senate confirmation hearings, he walks into the job looking like a dullard. And where is the victory for Republicans? They succeeded only in making themselves look petty by delaying the vote. They vainly used the time they created to seek dirt with which to smear their fellow Republican, merely because he is President Obama’s nominee. Never before has the minority party in the Senate filibustered a president’s nominee for a Cabinet post,

What a surprise in the White House list of federal outlays that will be cut in New York State because of the sequester. It turns out that the impact will be largely positive in a state with one of the highest combined tax rates in the country. The White House list is too long to include in its entirety. But the President has cut shrewdly, and here is a sense of it. One big gain will be a $42.7 million savings that taxpayers won’t have to pay to teachers and schools.

"They are no longer worried, I think, about our economy being overwhelmed either by Europe writ large, the EU, or China somehow swallowing up every bit of innovation that exists in the world. They are no longer, I think, worried about our economy being overwhelmed beyond our shores.

In the words of George Will, “gridlock isn’t an American problem. Gridlock is an American achievement.” The media, representatives, and senators all claim to be yearning for some re-entrenchemnt of compromise in government. The American people like it, and left-leaning pundits like it. They say it’s essential to good governance, but history paints a different picture. Compromise was the cancer that kept the institution of slavery alive in the United States. The Compromises of 1820 and 1850 did little to assuage the friction between free states and slave states. Why?
