The markets came under dramatic selling pressure in late trading on Monday. WASHINGTON- The U.S. Treasury Department said it realized $156.4 million from sales of General Motors stock in January. The department is expected to unload its approximately 300 million shares on the open market by the end of 2014. It plans to do so gradually, using a trading plan that has not been made public so that hedge funds cannot corner the market, The Detroit News reported Monday. A federal prosecutor came in for some biting criticism today from Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Stephen Breyer for a racially charged remark made during a criminal trial. The comment by the justices came as the court declined to hear the appeal of a man who was convicted in a Texas federal court of being in on a drug conspiracy. The issue for the defendant, Bongani Charles Calhoun, was whether he knew that the people he accompanied on a road trip were about to buy illegal drugs, or whether he was merely along for the ride.

Gas prices continue to go in the wrong direction. Atlantans were paying an average of $3.79 a gallon for gasoline early Monday, an increase of nearly a dime since a week ago and 67 cents more than the mid-December price. The current national average price is $3.78, and the national average for the month of $3.63 is the highest ever for the month of February, according to AAA. The average has surpassed $4 a gallon in four states, “and a couple others are only a few cents shy of reaching the $4 mark,” said Jessica Brady, a spokeswoman for AAA.

Allowing the $85 billion sequester to go forward will make the United States more vulnerable to a terrorist attack, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday. Napolitano added that the blunt nature of the $85 billion in automatic spending cuts set for March 1 “makes it awfully, awfully tough” to mitigate threats faced by the nation. “I don´t think we can maintain the same level of security at all places around the country with sequester compared to without sequester,” said Napolitano, whose agency includes the Transportation Security Administration.

San Francisco — A Sacramento man was arrested early Monday after he shot up a man´s Western Addition home with an automatic rifle, San Francisco police said. Kareem Benton, 42, got into an argument Sunday night with another man on the 1000 block of McAllister Street and followed the man to his home nearby, said Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman. Benton then pulled out a fully automatic AK-47 and "sprayed" the man´s home with bullets just after 7:30 p.m., Esparza said. The victim, who was in his home, was shot in the leg and is expected to survive.

What a surprise in the White House list of federal outlays that will be cut in New York State because of the sequester. It turns out that the impact will be largely positive in a state with one of the highest combined tax rates in the country. The White House list is too long to include in its entirety. But the President has cut shrewdly, and here is a sense of it. One big gain will be a $42.7 million savings that taxpayers won’t have to pay to teachers and schools.
