Hollywood producer and Obama fundraiser Harvey Weinstein arranged First Lady Michelle Obama’s Oscars appearance, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Silver Linings Playbook producer and promoter approached the Academy Awards’ president and Oscar show producers who “loved the idea.” Michelle Obama, who said, “we watch movies all the time at the White House,” also liked the idea. Complicated plans—which one Oscar show producer likened to a CIA mission—were then made for the surprise appearance. Weinstein also hired former Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter to lobby for Silver Linings,

During a news conference on Monday, President Barack Obama addressed a gathering of the nation’s governors and warned about the impact that sequestration cuts could have on their states. He advocated for increased spending on infrastructure projects around the nation, and lashed out at Congressional Republicans who “reflexively oppose any idea that I put forward, even if it’s an idea that they once supported.” Obama advocated for new infrastructure spending as a way to put unemployed Americans back to work, as well as to repair up the nation’s failing roads and bridges.

It was the trip witnessed ´round the world: While making her way to the stage to accept the award for Best Actress at Sunday´s Academy Awards, Jennifer Lawrence stumbled and fell on a short flight of stairs, landing on her knees and hands. But while the world was Tweeting, updating, and pinning about the epic fall, Lawrence´s awesome night was just beginning. She got a hand from Hugh Jackman: She simultaneously addressed her mortification and dismissed it, by starting her acceptance speech with the perfect opener: "Thank you, you guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano admitted that the upcoming sequester cuts would have a negative effect on her department warning of fewer border guards, longer lines at the airport, and longer waits for cargo inspections. “It’s almost an out of body experience.” Napolitano said, remarking that she was just pressured by Congress to strengthen security at the border. “The very next day, I was in the Appropriations Committee saying ‘well you’re taking it all back through sequestration,’” she added with disbelief. Napolitano added that the DHS would continue

Speaking to American governors this afternoon, President Obama insisted that spending money wasn’t the federal government’s biggest problem. “Folks who think spending really is our biggest problem should be more concerned than anybody about improving our infrastructure right now,” Obama said explaining that the nation’s infrastructure was crumbling. “We’re talking about deferred maintenance here. We know we’re going to have to spend the money. And the longer we wait, the more it’s going to cost.” Obama asked the governors in the room to pressure Congressional members to

Jerusalem - Israel carried out a successful first test on Monday of its upgraded Arrow interceptor, which is designed to destroy in space the kind of missiles held by Iran and Syria, defense officials said. The U.S.-backed Arrow III will deploy "kamikaze" satellites that track and slam into ballistic missiles above the earth´s atmosphere, high enough to allow for any chemical, biological or nuclear warheads to disintegrate safely. Monday´s test was the first flight of the system, but did not involve the interception of any target. Israel deployed the previous version, Arrow II, more than a decade ago

Lucrative union contracts have driven five Connecticut nursing homes at the center of a labor dispute into bankruptcy. HealthBridge Management has entered five of its nursing homes into Chapter 11 bankruptcy to escape labor contracts that left the company losing $1.3 million each month, according to senior vice president of labor relations Lisa Crutchfield. “The centers have a bright future if they can operate under labor agreements that reflect today’s financial realities, but the fact is the centers will not survive unless we have relief from the crushing burden of unsustainable labor costs, especially the spiraling

In an op-ed for USA Today, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) says that a $9 per hour minimum wage is not enough. He says, “While I was heartened to hear President Obama make the minimum wage a centerpiece of his State of the Union Address, I believe that his proposal of $9 per hour does not go far enough to ensure that working families can make ends meet.” But might I ask you Mr. Harkin how the small business owners that employ these minimum wage workers will afford more than $9 an hour? What now small business owners aren’t

Jeffress and the church have been accused of promoting hate speech and anti-Semitism simply for believing that marriage should be between one man and one woman and that salvation through Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. In the midst of the controversy, NFL quarterback Tim Tebow backed out

Although they’re never labeled as such, the San Francisco Chronicle typically has two to three articles each week demonstrating the inherent dysfunctions of liberalism. One recent example was a front page story “No Quick Fix for Life in Projects.” The article chronicles the disheartening experiences of the thousands of residents in the city’s 6,476 units in its 45 public housing projects. “Residents who live in public housing told the Chronicle they constantly deal with violence, units infested with roaches and mice, heating that doesn’t work and major mold and mildew problems.”

Hunters across Louisiana are outraged after state health officials ordered a rescue mission to destroy $8,000 worth of deer meat because venison is not allowed to be served in homeless shelters. The Dept. of Health and Hospitals ordered the staff at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission to throw 1,600 pounds of donated venison in garbage bins – and then ordered then to douse the meat with Clorox – so other animals would not eat the meat. “Deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment

One member of the College of Cardinals will sit out next month’s papal conclave — but it’s not the one you might have expected. Scottish Cardinal Keith O’Brien abruptly retired as Archbishop overnight after several priests in his diocese leveled accusations of inappropriate sexual advances toward them. O’Brien also declined to take part in the conclave, although he technically remained eligible to do so: Cardinal Keith O’Brien says he will be skipping the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI after resigning as archbishop in the wake of misconduct allegations.

In an embarrassing slip of the tongue, Mr Kerry last week praised US diplomats working to secure "democratic institutions" in the Central Asian country, which does not exist. The newly minted diplomat was referring to Kyrgyzstan, a poor, landlocked nation of 5.5 million, which he appeared to confuse with its resource-rich neighbour to the north, Kazakhstan. The State Department kindly omitted the error in the official transcript of Wednesday´s speech, which Mr Kerry delivered on the eve of his first foreign trip as secretary of state. Mr Kerry´s flub was all the more awkward, because Kyrgyzstan is a key ally

The true national debt

How big is the national debt? You’d think this would be an easy question. Surely we know how much the government owes. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. The true national debt could be triple the conventional estimate, anywhere from $11 trillion to $31 trillion by my reckoning. The differences mostly reflect explicit and implicit “off-budget” federal loan guarantees. In another economic downturn, these could result in large losses that would be brought “on budget” and worsen already huge deficits. That’s the danger. My purpose is not to scare or sensationalize. It’s simply to illuminate the problem.

The latest from “moderate” Libya: Four foreign Christians, including an American with dual Swedish citizenship, have been arrested on suspicion of being missionaries who have been distributing Christian literature. They were apprehended in Benghazi, the jihadist hotbed where U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were murdered in September. The missionaries could face the death penalty under Islam’s sharia law, which forbids the proselytizing of creeds other than Islam, imposes capital punishment on Muslims who convert to Christianity, and similarly discourages any speech that might sow discord among Muslims. Freshman Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is just the latest in a long series of public figures to be reviled for "McCarthyism" following his recent questioning of Chuck Hagel, President Obama´s nominee for secretary of defense. The response? Conservatives have rushed to defend their own against the charge. To understate the case, that´s not enough. It´s time to debunk McCarthyism itself. No matter how much evidence vindicating the late Sen. Joe McCarthy comes out, what we call McCarthyism remains anathema in American life. Simply to utter the word is to deep-freeze debate, even thought itself.

Will Republicans Be

Republicans supporting a massive legalization program as part of immigration “reform” must have blinders on. They must not see the perverted way the Obama administration simply refuses to enforce existing immigration laws — damning any promised “get tough” enforcement policy included in any immigration deal. The Republican advocates of immigration reform argue that America should secure the border, legalize at least 11 million illegal immigrants, and vigorously enforce the immigration laws in the future. This goal — to start over while at the same time preventing future illegal immigration once and for all — has great appeal.

It was a better than average Oscar show last night. Host Seth MacFarlane came under fire for some less than tasteful jokes, but there were also a few terrific highlights. A great night for Bond fans, with wonderful performances from Dame Shirley Bassey (Goldfinger) and Adele (Skyfall), with Adele winning Best Original Song. Unusually there were no excruciating acceptance speeches, which were kept remarkably brief and politics free. The main awards were spread across several powerful films in a very strong year for movies. Daniel Day-Lewis was a thoroughly deserving winner for Best Actor for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln

How acute is the shortage of comity, compromise, and true leadership in Washington? Bad enough that the closest example of political courage is a Virginia conservative whom Democrats dubbed "Governor Ultrasound." Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is set to sign a bipartisan transportation package approved last weekend by lawmakers in Richmond, steering up to $1 billion a year to the state’s battered transportation infrastructure. It trims the gas tax, adds new taxes on wholesale gasoline and diesel sales, and increases the sales tax. “If you are a conservative,” influential conservative blogger Erick Erickson writes, “remember Bob McDonnell thinks you’re an idiot.”

What in the hell was Karl Rove thinking? This has been the question on the minds of many political observers since the Republican super-strategist opened up a nasty new front in the ongoing civil war between his party’s purists and its pragmatists. he storm broke February 6, when Rove, via the front page of The New York Times, debuted his newest venture, the Conservative Victory Project: an aggressive battle plan for the midterms that involves his super PAC, American Crossroads, intervening in the GOP primaries to try to ensure that the strongest, most electable candidates—not necessarily the most ideologically pristine ones—prevail.
