What in the hell was Karl Rove thinking? This has been the question on the minds of many political observers since the Republican super-strategist opened up a nasty new front in the ongoing civil war between his party’s purists and its pragmatists. he storm broke February 6, when Rove, via the front page of The New York Times, debuted his newest venture, the Conservative Victory Project: an aggressive battle plan for the midterms that involves his super PAC, American Crossroads, intervening in the GOP primaries to try to ensure that the strongest, most electable candidates—not necessarily the most ideologically pristine ones—prevail.

The White House kept its press corps in the dark about first lady Michelle Obama´s Oscar video appearance to present Argo the best picture Academy Award Sunday night--the latest sign in the fractured relationship between the president´s team and the media that cover them. When she appeared on TV to present the award, it was the first the press corps knew it was happening. The pool report issued at 12:31 a.m. Monday morning revealing the details of first lady´s event ended with this sentence: "WH kept the event hush-hush in advance.

On Meet the Press, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal said that President Obama should delay Obamacare to cancel sequestration: "But the president needs to step up to the plate and say to Congress, here’s how you cut 85 billion dollars. I’ve got an idea for them," said Jindal. "Right," the host interrupted. "But he-- but he has-- he has said it, just Congress doesn’t want to raise-- doesn’t want to raise the revenues." Jindal continued, "Just delay the Medicaid expansions, delay the health care exchanges so they can work with states on waivers, on flexibility.

CNN’s “Reliable sources” host Howard Kurtz and Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik debated on Sunday whether MSNBC’s hiring of former Obama officials Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod is punditry or propaganda. “Two of President Obama’s fiercest and most visible defenders are now becoming television pundits,” Kurtz said, asking Zurawik, a frequent “Reliable Sources” guest, about the move. “They are smart guys,” Zurawik said. “And, look, there is an advantage, Howie, I think, to having people who are in the room at key moments at this high level on your cable channel or network. That’s important.

In the aftermath of the 2012 elections, Republicans took solace in the idea that while the GOP isn’t doing well in Washington, it’s winning in emphatic fashion elsewhere. Republicans have historic levels of dominance in governorships and state legislatures, and that’s led a number of conservatives to pronounce the states as where the right’s focus ought to be for the next several years, as Washington finds itself in constant gridlock. Yet the failures of Republican governance aren’t limited to Washington – they can make mistakes in the states, too.

TRENTON — For a man who championed the Republican brand as keynote speaker at its national convention last year, Gov. Chris Christie has been spending a lot of time making nice with Democrats. Most famously, Christie was complimentary of Democratic President Barack Obama’s response to superstorm Sandy just before last year’s election. He then almost as famously ripped House Speaker and fellow Republican John Boehner about playing politics with federal storm aid. Early on, his re-election campaign has consisted of endorsements by two unions and two Democratic mayors, as well as fundraisers in Hollywood and Silicon Valley.

Eddie Haskell was the real star of the 50s classic TV series “Leave It to Beaver.” Eddie constantly stirred up trouble, blamed the hapless Beave and Wally when things went wrong, but whose misdeeds were found out in the end by Ward and June Cleaver. That was a different day and age, but the Eddie Haskells are still with us, and they are in very high places. Barack Obama is our first “Eddie Haskell President.” He stirs up mischief, for which he blames the rascally Republicans, while professing his own innocence or non-involvement. He levitates above the

In an appearance late Sunday afternoon at a predominantly black church in Trenton, embattled U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez drew broad parallels between himself and other minority leaders such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The Democrat from Hudson County blamed his current troubles, which include questions about his relationship with a contributor and the possibility of a Senate Ethics Committee investigation, on right-wing bloggers. Speaking to a crowd of roughly 300 people who gathered at The Shiloh Baptist Church for a Black History Month celebration, Menendez appeared to surprise his own staff by using the venue to offer

According to a new analysis of foreign born populations by demographer, Wendell Cox, the fastest growth in the numbers of newcomers is taking place in unusual spots around America, all essentially in Red States. Topping the list is Nashville, which has doubled its number of immigrants in the last decade. “Besides the Grand Old Opry, the city also boasts the nation’s largest Kurdish population, and a thriving ‘Little Kurdistan,’ as well as growing Mexican, Somali and other immigrant enclaves,” says Joel Kotkin,

Jane Mayer of the New Yorker seized on a speech Cruz gave three years ago in which he asserted that when he was at Harvard Law School, shortly after Barack Obama, there were twelve Marxists on the faculty and one Republican. That, Mayer alleges, is evidence of Cruz’s innate McCarthyism--and hence, she implies, ought to discredit Cruz’s
