The Pentagon on Friday grounded its fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade in one plane. The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, California, of an F-35A, the US Air Force version of the sleek new plane. The Navy and the Marine Corps are buying other versions of the F-35, which is intended to replace older fighters like the Air Force F-16 and the Navy F/A-18. Britain is also purchasing the aircraft for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. All versions - a total of 51 planes - were grounded Friday pending a more in-depth evaluation of the problem discovered at Edwards.

LEEVILLE, La. – At the 85th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, an independent Louisiana-shot film, Beasts of the Southern Wild will be up for four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, for its fictional account of a desolate band of folks living beyond the levees. Nearly 2,000 miles away, this fishing community deep in the bayous of southern Louisiana is the real-life place beyond the levees, a place where residents eke out a living selling bait fish, brace for destruction each time a large storm looms and watch the Gulf of Mexico´s steady march toward their front porches.

In many ways, last night´s ratings downgrade by Moodys was helpful. As Iain Martin writes, it represents a personal embarrassment for a Chancellor who has staked his all on his credibility with the markets. However, it may help pull the wool from some eyes in Westminster. If what we get is realism, then the price will be worth paying. Being credible is not the same as being a useful fool.[Snip]The only people who will get burned when the gilt bubble bursts is the man on the street whose pension fund and annuities have had their bond element completely mispriced.

Fashion designer David Meister is known for dressing big celebrities—bombshells like Sophia Vergara and Elizabeth Hurley, whose tightly draped forms practically leave burn marks on Hollywood´s red carpet. But to please his newest client, Mr. Meister had to think small—4-foot-8½ to be exact. He also needed to ditch details like plunging necklines and studs, trading them for more youthful touches such as sparkles and bows. Most important, the styles had to have what he calls "the twirl factor." That´s because his client is, well, a girl:

In 2004, CBS News anchor Dan Rather was given a series of memos purporting to show how George W. Bush had avoided service in Vietnam during the early 1970s. Rather wanted so badly for the document to be real that he put it on the air without much thought. He even sexed up his sourcing a bit, claiming (falsely) that the documents had been authenticated by experts. It took nearly two weeks for the fake documents to be exposed and for this highly damaging story about George W. Bush to be disproven. For most of that period, CBS News and Rather

Senate aides confirmed Friday that Republicans are coalescing around an alternative to the sequester that would keep the lower spending levels in place, but give federal agencies greater flexibility to determine where the cuts are implemented. The exact details of the Republican proposals are unclear. A GOP Senate aide told Business Insider that Republicans are considering a plan that would fund the government at the levels dictated by the sequestration — which amounts to about $85 billion in spending cuts for fiscal year 2013 — while giving the Obama administration the flexibility to reprogram the cuts at their discretion,

First responders arrayed behind him at a press conference. Teachers furloughed from the classroom. Air-traffic controllers furloughed from the control towers. Everything but pay for the troops at risk in the armed forces. President Obama wants us to taste austerity. He wants us to see what it would be like if our representatives in Congress — and this is all Congress´ fault, in his version of events — fail to get back to Washington and avoid the sequester scheduled to take place on March 1.

A federal appeals court allowed a legal challenge to the National Labor Relations Board to move forward on Friday, casting additional doubt on the legitimacy of the Obama administration’s embattled labor arbiter. A three-judge panel from the D.C. Circuit Court ordered the board to file a written response defending President Barack Obama’s recess appointments. The ruling stems from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation’s (NRTW) appeal to an NLRB ruling that forced non-union employees to pay for union lobbying costs. National Right to Work attorney Glenn Taubman said the board’s decision violates Beck Rights,

How Should We treat American Jihadists?

If a plane full of 200 American citizens is hijacked by foreign jihadists, the law does not tell us whether the president should shoot down the plane or let it be plowed into a skyscraper and kill 3,000 American citizens. It is the kind of excruciating decision that war makes necessary. Legal niceties do not tell us how to resolve it. That is the problem with our debate over the treatment of U.S. nationals who join the enemy’s forces in wartime — most urgently, over the targeted killing of our fellow citizens. We want the legal answer.

This week I received an e-mail with the subject line: “Please Colbert, write about Jesse Jackson Jr and father.” The message from Dennis Flynn was brief: “Please write about the part genetics play in the problems in the Jackson family lineage. Out of marriage children by a Minister. Fraud and stealing by a congressman. What an example for young African Americans.” It was a racial taunt, perhaps best ignored. But the attempt to twist the knife also displayed ignorance. The writer chose to view the fall of Jesse Jackson Jr. through the lens of race, ignoring how widespread

Strange things happen when a country kills people but refuses to give even a rough estimate of how many. Have American drone strikes killed 2,000 humans? 3,000 humans? 4,000 humans? 5,000 humans? 6,000 humans? No one knows for sure. President Obama avers that citizens are right to debate the killings. But he won´t reveal how many men, women, and children are killed. In response, several nonprofits have endeavored to parse media reports from Pakistan and beyond. They´re our best sources until the truth outs, as it eventually tends to do. Enter Senator Lindsey Graham, who sits

Prepare for the end of food safety as we have known it. For a breakdown in public order. For little children languishing in ignorance. If only Edward Gibbon were here to chronicle the devastation. On March 1, the fabric of our civilization begins to unwind. That’s when the economy begins to stall and we turn our back on our values, all because the federal government will have to begin to cut a few tens of billions of dollars from the largest budget the world has ever known. This is the lurid fairy tale spun

Dads matter. President Barack Obama said it recently in Chicago, a city on track for 600 murders this year, the equivalent of two Sandy Hooks per month. Too bad he still does not understand that his left-wing ideology is the problem. (Snip) Obama, in Chicago, finally talked about the lack of fathers and the impact this has on crime rather than complain about the number of rounds in a magazine: "For a lot of young boys and young men in particular, they don´t see an example of fathers or grandfathers, uncles, who are in a position to support families

Teddy Turner, son of billionaire media mogul Ted Turner and Republican candidate for Congress, said his father’s marriage to Jane Fonda prompted his major left turn. “I was raised in a different time at the Turner household … a very conservative household with capitalism and all of that kind of stuff,” the younger Turner told Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show.” Teddy Turner is running for Congress in South Carolina, where he faces former Gov. Mark Sanford in a Republican primary. His platform includes opposition to taxes and same-sex marriage and he is a global warming skeptic –

Forbes put Detroit Mayor Dave Bing on its cover in 2011 for a story with the optimistic headline: “City of Hope.” The premise was that the city had hit rock bottom and was poised for a turnaround. “Right now, it’s all about survival,” Bing told Forbes. Two years later, Detroit’s problems continue to multiply, sadly. It is still dealing with high levels of violent crime and unemployment. Home prices, already at historic lows, plummeted a further 35% during the past three years to a median of $40,000 as net migration out of the city continued. The latest blow

Electric cars never really made any sense. They are cloaked in the sanctimony of the green movement, because they don´t use nasty fossil fuels like gasoline. Instead, they use electricity, which is sent out through power lines from big power plants, which generate this electricity—how? Oh yes, by burning fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas. This is known as the "long tailpipe," which goes from the car charging up in your garage all the way back to the smokestack of a coal-fired power plant. And don´t forget, electric cars also have giant batteries made from nasty toxic metals

Sometimes, silence really is golden. In politics, taking the path of highest visibility isn’t always the smartest way to do things. This week presented two good examples of that principle being violated, one by a Democrat and the other by a Republican. As we watch President Obama stumping for comprehensive immigration reform, the question arises: Does his high-visibility association with this issue make reform more or less likely to happen? The challenge of achieving comprehensive immigration legislation is not in winning the votes of House and Senate Democrats; it’s in getting enough Republican votes to pass it

The story has more irony than a Greek tragedy. Three sisters from a devoutly Catholic family have seen their personal and political careers ruined by a scandal that began with, of all things, a letter to some nuns. Thursday´s conviction of suspended Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin along with her aide and sister, Janine Orie, on campaign corruption charges mean they might join a third sister — former state Sen. Jane Orie — in state prison. No sentencing date has been set. The former senator was sentenced last year to 2½ to 10 years for using

From Oscar contenders to Lady Gaga, it seems everybody who is anybody in Hollywood has a security detail in their entourage and there are some who see it as a big business opportunity. Kent Moyer, who got his start working security for the Playboy Mansion, founded the World Protection Group 12 years ago as a bodyguard training program to produce professional alternatives to the hired thug. "If you look at some of the Hollywood people and what we call the so-called ´bodyguard-type,´ big people, no training, maybe bouncer from clubs, maybe friends that they picked that are really tall, big,

Just prior to the 2008 elections, Barack Obama boldly stated, "We are 5 days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America" (October 30, 2008) Many among my conservative friends took that to be so much fluff; pretty much liberal boilerplate consistent with his whole "Hope and Change" campaign message. Given, however, Obama´s background, cutting his teeth with the radical leftists/communists of his day (i.e., Frank Marshall Davis, Bernadine Dorn, Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright) I chose to take him at his word.

WASHINGTON — A congressional aide says the White House has agreed to give the Senate Intelligence Committee documents related to the attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. Republicans had demanded the documents as a condition of voting on the nomination of John Brennan to be CIA director. The congressional aide says the documents include emails between top national security officials showing the debate within the administration over how to describe the attack and other documents the committee had been asking for. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity

WASHINGTON- Michelle Obama says she´s eyeing another campaign in 2016 and, contrary to speculation, it doesn´t involve running for public office. During her first appearance on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Friday, the host asked her to consider a Michelle-Hillary ticket for president in 2016. The latter is former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who lost the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination to Mrs. Obama´s husband. Speculation is rampant that Clinton is gearing up to run again in 2016. "You know, I have my eye actually on another job. And I hear that when Jay Leno retires

A legal brief the Justice Department filed with the Supreme Court Friday asking the justices to strike down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act is raising hopes among gay rights advocates that President Barack Obama is on the verge of embracing a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage. The brief formally urges the court to declare unconstitutional the portion of the 1996 law barring recognition of same-sex marriages by the federal government for income tax purposes, federal employee benefits, immigration and myriad other programs

Chicago hasn’t had a Republican mayor in over 80 years. Democrats have controlled the Illinois governor’s mansion and both houses of the legislature for more than a decade, with Democrats ruling the Illinois House for 28 of the last 30 years. No matter, Chicago violence is the fault of Republicans. We learned that this morning on CNN Newsroom when anchor Carol Costello asked her “Talk Back” guests about Retired Lt. General Russel Honore’s suggestion to use National Guard troops to curb murders in Chicago. Democratic strategist Robert Zimmerman astutely pinpointed the reason for Chicago’s
