Will Ray Nagin continue to resist the lure of a plea?

If more people charged with crimes in this country were like former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, chaos would overtake the justice system. Nagin may yet fall in line, but, so far, he seems inclined to plead not guilty. If even 50 percent of defendants refused to roll over, the courts would be swamped. They could never handle that many trials. It is such a rare case, state or federal, that does not end with a plea bargain that we must conclude either that prosecutors hardly ever file erroneous charges or possess great coercive powers. In 2011, according to

A health insurance company headed by an old friend from when President Obama was an Illinois state senator got a $340 million federal loan to establish Obamacare co-ops in New York, New Jersey and Oregon despite having a chronic record of consumer and regulatory complaints. The New York-based Freelancers Insurance Company has been rated the "worst" insurer for two straight years by state regulators, and data compiled by a national insurance association show an extremely high rate of consumer complaints. The firm was founded in 2008 by Sara Horowitz, who worked with Obama while he was in the

Misunderstanding, misstatements and all the classic contortions of partisan message management surround the sequester, the term for the $85?billion in ugly and largely irrational federal spending cuts set by law to begin Friday. What is the non-budget wonk to make of this? Who is responsible? What really happened? The finger-pointing began during the third presidential debate last fall, on Oct. 22, when President Obama blamed Congress. “The sequester is not something that I’ve proposed,” Obama said. “It is something that Congress has proposed.”

A four-year FBI investigation into the transfer of classified weapons technology to China and other countries from NASA’s Ames Research Center is being stonewalled by government officials, sources tell FoxNews.com. Documents obtained by FoxNews.com, which summarize these and other allegations and were given to congressional sources last week by a whistle-blower, described how a “secret grand jury” was to be convened in February 2011 to hear testimony from informants in the case, including a senior NASA engineer. But federal prosecutor Gary Fry was removed from the case, which was then transferred

Gun Control: The silent media ignore a Colorado Democrat who says women don´t need firearms to defend themselves from predators and a patronizing vice president who says women can´t handle an AR-15 anyway. On Monday, the Colorado House passed four gun control bills. Among them is HB13-1226. It would ban concealed weapons on college campuses, as if creating more gun-free zones, such as the one around the Aurora, Colo., theater, where 12 were killed and another 59 wounded, will prevent more massacres. Colorado is a concealed-carry state, as was Virginia at the time of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Propaganda: Among Oscar´s favorites, "Argo" claims to be a broadly accurate retelling of real events in the Iranian hostage crisis. But it´s historic revisionism masquerading as revelation. And that revisionism, carried out by Democrat activists Ben Affleck and co-producer George Clooney, conveniently makes the Democrat laughingstock of the crisis, former President Carter, look good. The more we learn about the project, the more it smells like a bad Hollywood plot to rehab Carter´s legacy as one of the worst presidents in history. It turns out that Carter quietly collaborated on the film, and has breathlessly

Obama´s Hyperbolic Sequester Pla First responders arrayed behind him at a press conference. Teachers furloughed from the classroom. Air-traffic controllers furloughed from the control towers. Everything but pay for the troops at risk in the armed forces. President Obama wants us to taste austerity. He wants us to see what it would be like if our representatives in Congress — and this is all Congress´ fault, in his version of events — fail to get back to Washington and avoid the sequester scheduled to take place on March 1. Can we live with fewer firemen and teachers and more

The Obama administration touts early childhood education as a ladder out of poverty. In reality, it´s a dubious solution to a misdiagnosed problem. No matter how much solid science you throw at it, nothing shakes the faith of so many in the transformative power of so-called "high-quality" schooling for preschool-age children. Late last year, the Department of Health and Human Services released results of a rigorous study showing that the Head Start program, costing $8 billion a year, has had little or no effect on the cognitive, physical or emotional well-being of kids once they reach third grade.

At the Associated Press yesterday, Michael Kunzelman managed to write a 500-word story about the arraignment of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin on bribery charges without once mentioning that Nagin is a Democrat. That´s probably not a "Name That Party" record for "Most Words Used in an AP Story about a Democratic Politician Tainted by Scandal and/or Corruption," but it´s especially galling, given the mayor´s culpability (along with then-Governor Kathleen Blanco) for failing to ensure that New Orleans was evacuated on a timely basis in anticipation of Hurricane Katrina, and given the national press´s non-stop blaming of

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, police officers confiscated hundreds of firearms. The West Virginia House of Delegates has taken a major step in ensuring something similar doesn´t happen here. House Bill 2471 passed the House unanimously Feb. 22. The bill, introduced by Speaker Rick Thompson, D-Wayne, would prohibit the restriction on lawful use of firearms and ammunition during a declared state of emergency. The bill is backed by the National Rifle Association and also creates a legal course of action for those whose weapons are unlawfully confiscated under this bill.

This must be Barack Obama’s way of thanking our veterans for serving. US veterans are receiving letters from the government informing them that they are disabled and not allowed to own, purchase or possess a firearm. If the veteran does decide to purchase a firearm he will by fined, imprisoned or both. This comes on page 2 of the VA letter. (Snip for graphic)Constitutional Attorney Michael Connelly, J.D. reported this at Red Flag News. How would you feel if you received a letter from the U.S. Government informing you that because of a physical or mental condition

RUSH: Okay, now, ladies and gentlemen, everybody agrees. They might not all say it, but everybody now agrees that even with the sequester, the government is going to be spending more money. You heard Jonathan Karl of ABC News admit that even with the sequester, the government will spend $15 billion more this year than last. Now, $15 billion when compared to $3,700 billion is chump change. But we´re still going to be spending $3,700 billion this year! We´re gonna be spending more this year than next, and even with sequester now, people are admitting it.

Zem Joaquin had a furniture dilemma. In 2005, the interior designer was trying to make her Marin County house a healthy environment for her two toddlers. But virtually all the couches on the market, she learned, contain foam with toxic flame retardants, the unintended result of a 1970s California law. So with a furniture maker´s help, Joaquin designed her own sofa. Yellow and big enough to seat seven, it is made of sustainably harvested wood, natural latex foam, organic wool - and no flame retardants. "I ended up actually designing my own furniture because there wasn´t an alternative out there yet,

By Hollywood standards, Lincoln has done respectable business at the box office and Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance as America’s 16th president is stunning, but a botched marketing campaign and a lack of ideological diversity among those who made the film have left tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars on the table — money that could have lined the coffers of legendary director Steven Spielberg and his partners, Disney and 20th Century Fox. First, there was the team that brought forth this film about the president who founded the Republican party, a team led by the blue-state heroes Steven Spielberg,

The feds plan to chase down disgraced bike racer Lance Armstrong for the sponsorship money his team earned from the US Postal Service, a federal government source told The Post today. The Justice Department will join a whistleblower lawsuit filed by ex-Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis, the source said. Landis’s suit, filed in 2010, says Armstrong committed fraud against the Postal Service because he raced while using performance-enhancing drugs. From 1998 to 2006, the Postal Service is believed to have paid around $30 million to back Armstrong’s team.

What do you get when you invite outspoken conservative firebrand Ann Coulter to debate outspoken libertarian John Stossel in front of an audience of 1,000+ libertarian students? Fireworks, that’s what. On tonight’s episode of Fox Business Network’s Stossel, Coulter got into a heated debate with Stossel and the students over a variety of social issues, in the process calling libertarians “pussies” and receiving lots of jeering for her remarks. Once a year, Stossel (full disclosure: my former boss) tapes a show at the International Students for Liberty Conference in Washington, D.C. He typically brings on friendly libertarian guests,

Yesterday, I wrote about the silliness of requiring a file clerk to have a college degree. This morning, a friend sent me the following note about the narrowing of opportunity in modern America: (Snip) It seems to me that a similar version of that narrowing-entry option is occurring in many fields. You´ve written in the past about how the top banks have steadily narrowed the pool of candidates whom they´ll consider - e.g., only 5-6 schools will even be looked at. A similar phenomenon has been occurring in law as well, and not just post-08 . . .

They do pretty good.” He then added with a smile, “They’re still not as good as their dad.” Obama, a Hawaii native, said he intends to

Joe Biden, a gun nut. Who knew? The veep never fails to entertain, even when he’s trying not to, and this time his boss is probably not amused. Joe famously pushed President Obama to endorse same-sex marriage by sniffing the orange blossoms first, but if his advice for Americans to buy a shotgun to protect the homeplace was an attempt to convert the president to a Second Amendment aficionado, he’ll no doubt fail. Joe’s endorsement of domestic mayhem in the cause of survival predictably infuriated those who are so terrified of guns that on certain playgrounds even little boys

In an utterly unsurprising development this week, a town meeting in Westford, Massachusetts debated whether or not to ban so-called "assault weapons." However, in a rather surprising development, the ban was not only withdrawn, but it was withdrawn to the cheering of hundreds of residents. CBS Boston even described the applause as "thunderous" It´s incredible to see hundreds of Americans stand up for their rights in one of the most liberal anti-gun enclaves in the country.

Stony-faced and emotionless, Oscar Pistorius looks deep in thought as he headed to a relatives´ home this evening. The Paralympic superstar is pictured next to his devoted sister after leaving the courthouse where he was released on bail. It follows a ruling by a magistrate that he should not be locked up until his trial for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. However, it emerged this evening that Pistorius may have to wait more than a year before his trial into Miss Steenkamp´s death takes place because of the creaking justice system in South Africa.

Let´s see LeBron James do this. Ashlee Arnau, a cheerleader at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss., made an incredible front-flip half-court shot Thursday night at halftime of the school´s men´s basketball game that became an instant Internet sensation. The ball was placed on the floor at midcourt. Arnau approached it with a running start, did a front-flip, grabbing the ball while she was upside down, and then launching it toward the basket while her legs swung forward. Swish! "I really don´t practice at all," Arnau told the AP in a phone interview.
