Last week, Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s prosecutorial style of questioning Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s nominee for Defense Secretary, came so close to innuendo that it raised eyebrows in Congress, even among his Republican colleagues. Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, called Cruz’s inquiry into Hagel’s past associations “out of bounds, quite frankly.” The Times reported that Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, rebuked Cruz for insinuating, without evidence, that Hagel may have collected speaking fees from North Korea. Some Democrats went so far as to liken Cruz,

NEW YORK- With its violent crimes, high unemployment, dwindling population and financial crisis, Detroit was named on Thursday as the most miserable city in the United States. It toppled Miami, which held the title last year, and surpassed Flint, Mich., Rockford and Chicago in Illinois, and Modesto, Calif., which rounded out the five most unhappy urban areas on the list. Rockford was ranked third due to its 11.2 percent unemployment rate, Forbes said. Forbes cited violent crime, high foreclosure rates and declining home prices as the reason it pushed Chicago into the fourth spot, along with

The number of double-digit hikes to health insurance premiums has fallen dramatically because of President Obama´s healthcare law, the Health and Human Services Department said Friday. The average increase in health insurance premiums has fallen significantly since the healthcare law — and its provisions allowing the health department to review certain rates — took effect in 2010. The agency said rate review has contributed to those declines. The average premium increase in 2012 was 30 percent lower than in 2010, according to a report

When people talk about Rupert Murdoch´s ambitions in the U.S. newspaper market, they´re usually talking about the Tribune Co´s Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. But with the Boston Globe up for sale, there´s speculation Murdoch might make a play there, too. Columnist Michael Wolff, a Murdoch biographer, talks to the Boston Herald: Rupert would be terrifically interested in the Boston Globe... Rupert is now in the process of shopping for American newspapers but doing that in the context of that this is the bottom of the market... He is — first, last and always — a newspaper publisher.

President Obama´s "longest lasting legacy" will be helping to create a new group of Republican leaders, says Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). Cruz, speaking at the Cuyahoga County GOP Lincoln Day dinner in Ohio on Thursday, made the comments while assessing why Republicans lost the 2012 presidential race. Cruz said Democrats controlled the perception of their party and the Republican Party. "You want to know what happened last election cycle? We didn´t win the argument for the American people," Cruz said Thursday night according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

President Obama said people won’t lose the right to vote if the Supreme Court strikes down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. Speaking Thursday to “The Black Eagle” radio show on SiriusXM, Obama said listeners shouldn’t worry too much that discrimination against minority voters will increase. The Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments about Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act next week. “I know in the past some folks have worried that if the Supreme Court strikes down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, they´re going

Would that our bureaucrats had this kind of attitude. CNN: Sen. Rand Paul cut another six-figure check to the United States Treasury Wednesday, taking the money he said he didn´t need from his office´s budget to make a tiny dent in the nation´s massive federal debt. "We watch every purchase," Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, said at an event next to an oversized check for $600,000. "We watch what computers we buy, what paper we buy, the ink cartridges. We treat the money like it´s our money, or your money, and we look at every expenditure."

Thursday morning, Glenn Kessler, so-called “fact checker” for the Washington Post, gave three Pinocchios to Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) for his claim in a chart that “Total Welfare Spending Equates To $168 Per Day For Every Household In Poverty.” What was wrong with the chart? As it turns out, nothing. But that didn’t stop hack Kessler from assigning Sessions to the liar category on the chart. Sessions based his chart on the fact that there are 80 welfare programs under the federal budget. He assigns to that list means-tested programs like Medicaid. “Medicaid is a federal program that is

On Thursday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott decision to expand Medicaid and establish state exchanges as called for by Obamacare can be perceived as an “honorable” endeavor. Scott, a fierce critic of Obamacare, helped lead the charge agains the health care law in the courts. “[I] think as a Republican conservative, who opposed Obamacare, taking it as a governor — I think you can act honorably either way,” Krauthammer said. “You can oppose it and have opposed it all the way

BRUSSELS— Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his NATO counterparts are considering leaving 8,000 to 12,000 troops in Afghanistan after 2014, but it was unclear how much of that force would be American, U.S. officials said Friday. A dispute flared, but was quickly dissipated at the NATO defense ministers gathering here to discuss the endgame of the 11-year-old war in Afghanistan. German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere told reporters that a post-2014 force of 8,000 to 10,000 American troops would remain in Afghanistan. Panetta denied that, saying the force of 8,000 to 12,000 would be international and

Earlier today, liberal Democrat Lanny Davis affirmed that the substance of Sen. Ted Cruz´ (R-TX) inquiry into Chuck Hagel´s undisclosed source of income derived from various speeches was "absolutely correct." He just quarreled with the way in which Cruz conducted his line of inquiry. So, in keeping with Lanny Davis´ assertion, I would like to give Sen. Cruz a lesson in the acceptable way for a Senator to behave. If you are Sen. Hillary Clinton, it is OK for you to tell a Four-Star General that he is a liar: "I think that the

President Obama is displaying a more emotional side of his personality as he works to sell his second-term agenda to the public. The Spock-like Obama criticized for being aloof has been ditched in favor of a president who tells personal anecdotes about his life, shares locked-away thoughts from his past and on several occasions has wiped away a tear or two in public. While Obama has more flexibility to be himself now because he doesn’t face reelection, the personal touches are also in tune with a White House effort to enact an agenda that includes gun control, immigration reform

PRETORIA, South Africa — After four days of combative hearings, a South African magistrate on Friday granted bail for Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee track star accused of murdering his girlfriend, in a case that has horrified and fascinated the nation and much of the world. (Snip) Magistrate Nair said bail was not a matter of guilt and innocence, but about determining whether justice would be served by holding a defendant in custody. But he took issue with the testimony and actions of the prosecution’s lead investigator, Detective Warrant Officer Hilton Botha, who has since been removed from the case

The driver of a Maserati who was killed in a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas strip on Thursday bragged about stashing a gun in his $120,000 Italian sports car. Kenneth Cherry, aka Kenny Clutch, was killed when men inside a black Range Rover opened fire on his car while he was sitting at a red light. He accelerated into the intersection and crashed into a taxi. Cab driver Michael Boldon and his passenger died when the taxi burst into flames. Family members said Boldon had recently moved to Las Vegas to take care of his ailing mother.

A furor over slavery has erupted at a Midtown elementary school, after a teacher handed out math homework that include questions asking kids to tally the killing and beating of slaves. The shocking questions were given to at least one class of 9-year-olds at PS 59 in Manhattan — which included the kids of United Nations personnel. The inflammatory queries were only uncovered after a student teacher was asked to hand them out to a second class. “What a shock! It seems so over the top,” said NYU professor Charlton McIlwain, who instructed the student teacher,

Imagine if Republicans in Utah or Alabama, responding to a horrifying sex crime, introduced a bill allowing warrantless searches of homosexuals’ homes to make sure they weren’t holding little boys as sex slaves. The national media would be discussing this gross violation of the Fourth Amendment incessantly, using it as an example of how fundamentally fascist the Republican Party is — everywhere. In a revealing presentation at Claremont McKenna College, birth-control activist Sandra Fluke said the U.S. military should accept transsexual recruits. The demise of the Pentagon’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” program, she said, should be only a first step toward a more inclusive American fighting force. Referring to what she called “the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning” community, Fluke said lawmakers didn’t go far enough in ending the military’s official but often unenforced ban on homosexuals. “We still don’t let trans-folk join the military,” Fluke said February 13. “That needs to change.”

We’re a fractious people, always have been, and our politics have been especially colorful. I’m a nearly lifelong fan of John C. Calhoun’s line about Henry Clay: “Like a mackerel by moonlight, he shines and stinks …”. Our political candidates have been mocked for their love affairs, their wooden legs, their false teeth, and their drinking habits. It’s not elegant, but rude, insulting talk is one of the products of free speech. It’s worth reminding ourselves that free speech around the world is still a rarity, and seems to be becoming even rarer. Lots of countries have

By denying coverage to spouses, employers not only save the annual premiums, but also the new fees that went into effect as part of the Affordable Care Act. This year, companies have to pay $1 or $2 “per life” covered on their plans, a sum that jumps to $65 in 2014. And health law guidelines proposed recently mandate coverage of employees’ dependent children (up to age 26), but husbands and wives are optional. “The question about whether it’s obligatory to cover the family of the employee is being thought through more than ever before,” says Helen Darling,

The European Central Bank this week, for the first time, published details of its former bond-buying initiative, known as the Securities Markets Program. The timing of the release, on the eve of Italy´s Feb. 24-25 elections, is as interesting as the data. The bank used to publish weekly information on the total amount of bonds it purchased under the program, until August last year when ECB President Mario Draghi replaced it with a new one called Outright Monetary Transactions. At times during the financial crisis, this indicator was watched more closely than any other,

The Washington Post has a blog post entitled “President Rahm? (Snip)Well, now there is recent credible polling on Emanuel, and it’s not good for the mayor. A Crain’s/Ipsos poll out Thursday finds that the mayor’s popularity has fallen sharply since voters were last surveyed in September: Just 2 percent of Chicagoans surveyed said they strongly approve of the mayor´s job performance, with 12 percent somewhat approving and 5 percent leaning that way.
