John Brennan, President Obama’s nominee for CIA director, does not believe we are at war with jihadists because “jihad is a holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one’s community, and there’s nothing holy, legitimate, or Islamic about murdering innocent men and women.” On May 26, 2010, speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Mr. Brennan said, “Nor do we describe our enemy as jihadists or Islamists.” That is Mr. Brennan’s view, but how about the view of the Islamist enemies who are fighting us? Osama bin Laden described his war against

Republican members of Congress have weighed in on the legal battle being waged over the Obamacare mandate requiring employers to provide contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs to employees. Eleven senators and congressmen filed an amicus brief, also known as a friend-of-the-court brief, with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit on Tuesday in support of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a Christian-owned and operated corporation that opposes the mandate based on its owners’ religious beliefs. Hobby Lobby filed suit against Health and Human Services and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Braulio Castillo, owner of Signet Computers, told CNSNews.com today he did not have a personal relationship with any Internal Revenue Service employee after the Associated Press reported that the House Oversight Committee was investigating whether a personal relationship between an IRS employee and Castillo "produced a series of government contracts worth about $500 million." “Do you have a personal relationship with somebody there at IRS,” CNSNews.com asked Castillo on Thursday. “Well, no,” Castillo said. In a letter to acting Treasury Secretary Neil Wolin, House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa said, “Witnesses

The District of Columbia seems not to want the public to know what it did — if anything — while investigating NBC News’ David Gregory for possession of an illegal 30-round magazine. The police refuse to turn over the public documents in the case, and the city council is allowing them to stonewall. Mr. Gregory wielded the “high capacity” magazine on his Dec. 23 “Meet the Press” show. Afterwards, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said that it had been asked by NBC if the multi-million dollar TV anchor could possess the illegal component and refused him. The police

Marana, Ariz.-The snow is gone from the Match Play Championship, and so are Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. In a stunning conclusion Thursday, Shane Lowry made a 4-foot par putt on the 18th hole to eliminate McIlroy in the opening round of golf´s most unpredictable tournament. It was the third time in the last four years the No. 1 seed went home after one round. Moments later, Charles Howell III beat the second-seeded Woods on the 17th hole. Howell nearly holed a wedge for birdie on the 16th and made a 25-foot birdie on the 16th to seize control.

Marana, Arizona - Three-times winner Tiger Woods was knocked out in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Thursday, losing 2&1 to fellow American Charles Howell III. Woods never led but got back to all square with four holes to play before Howell birdied the 15th and 16th to regain control. Howell almost holed out with his approach at the par-15th, his ball settling just inches from the cup, then sank a 24-footer at the par-three 16th to go 2up. Both players parred the 17th in fading daylight at Dove Mountain as Woods was eliminated

Cyberwar: A cybersecurity firm reports a secretive Chinese military unit is behind many recent "hack attacks" into U.S. computers, stealing trade and military secrets and developing a potentially crippling new weapon. In a 2009 editorial we noted that units of China´s armed forces, whom we dubbed its "Cybertooth Tigers" were developing capabilities to penetrate and potentially disrupt U.S. computer systems as part of the People´s Liberation Army´s focus on what is known as "asymmetrical" warfare, specifically cyber-warfare. Decline: French labor law and France´s lounging work culture are ruining a tire factory north of Paris. The French want a U.S. business to take over. But the company refused. It knows that Europe is a productivity pit. The money-losing Goodyear Dunlop plant in Amiens is scheduled for closure, ending the jobs of 1,173 workers at the facility. But calling many of these employees "workers" is being overly kind. Maurice Taylor, CEO of Titan International, a tire company that was asked to take over the plant, describes employees who are more like wards.

Sequester: Faced with suddenly being forced to cut 3%, a business would manage the challenge effectively — or go out of business. "America´s CEO" prefers politicized chaos and he should be held accountable. Someone who claims he has spent trillions of dollars of other people´s money wisely should be able to manage a pittance in spending cuts without falsely claiming that the sky is falling. How many times have we heard President Obama tout his ability to spend smart? "Making smart investments in our people that we pay for responsibly is the only proven way to both cut

Al-Qaeda´s list of 22 tips for dodging drone attacks - including at least one believed to originate with Osama bin Laden - has been found hidden inside a manila envelope in a building abandoned by Islamists in Mali. The document includes advice such as "hide under thick trees" (believed to be bin Laden´s contribution), and instructions for setting up a "fake gathering" using dolls to "mislead the enemy". Found by the Associated Press in a building in Timbuktu, the ancient city occupied by Islamists last year, the document is believed to have been abandoned as extremists fled

In the 1950s, Democratic politicians in Virginia, led by Sen. Harry Byrd Sr., undertook an effort called "massive resistance." Through various legislative and administrative means, they sought to circumvent the mandate for school integration that the Supreme Court had issued in the 1954 case of Brown v. Board of Education. Similar stirrings can be heard today in Illinois--specifically, from the Cook County State´s Attorney´s office, which prosecutes crimes in Chicago. At issue is not the 14th Amendment´s guarantee of equal protection before the law, but the Second Amendment´s guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms.

Do they honestly expect us to believe that if we add $1 billion to the $45 billion we´re spending, one more program to the 30-odd we have -- and, remember, this new program doesn´t replace any;

The illegal immigrant who applied to Trident Technical College earlier this week will not be eligible for state or federal financial aid, according to school officials. Israel Ortega, 27, of North Charleston, was granted a temporary stay in the United States through the Department of Homeland Security’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA. That cleared the way for him to apply at Trident. [Snip] Earlier this week, the state’s Commission on Higher Education offered the school clarification, school spokesman David Hansen said. It’s been a tough week in public relations for Karl Rove. First, the Tea Party Patriots objected to Rove’s criticism of extreme rhetoric from grassroots organizations by, er, putting him in a Nazi uniform in an e-mail — for which they apologized, but not before making Rove’s case. At nearly the same time, Bob Woodward painted Rove’s efforts to find prepared Republican candidates as an attempt to create an establishment “politburo” within the GOP, which Rove angrily denounced on Fox’s Hannity last night: (Snip)Frankly, I don’t get the angst over Rove’s PAC.No one is forced to contribute to his PAC,

President Obama, speaking to a very friendly Al Sharpton as part of a round with black broadcasters Thursday, offered a harsh assessment of the GOP -- arguing that their opposition to taxing the wealthy was the only thing keeping an otherwise deeply divided party from falling apart. Speaking about the looming sequester deadline, Obama said: "My sense is that their basic view is that nothing is important enough to raise taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations, and they would rather see [billions in sequester cuts to social programs]... That´s the thing that binds their party together at this point."

The party of Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan has now lost the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections. The marketplace of ideas will render us irrelevant, and soon, if we are not honest about our time and place in history. Unfortunately, much of the discussion has focused on cosmetic solutions to, say, our underperformance among ethnic and young voters. This is a mistake: we cannot cross this river by feeling for stones. Instead, we need to take a hard look at what today’s conservatism stands for.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is returning $600,000 to the U.S. Treasury that he saved by scrimping in the past year at his Senate office. “It’s the only budget I control. … It’s not enough, but it’s a start,” the senator told reporters at a conference in downtown Louisville. The Courier-Journal reports that Mr. Paul’s savings were due to “watching every purchase,” from travel and salaries to “computers, paper, ink cartridges.” “We are frugal from top to bottom,” he added. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also returned more than $1 million this past year, and has returned funds every year prior,

Despite President Obama’s dire warnings of “brutal” budget slashing if automatic spending cuts hit March 1, federal agencies do have some wiggle room to soften the brunt of the cuts. Budget analysts say the government can take steps to postpone the impact of the so-called sequester budget cuts — such as delaying the announcement of new contracts, not filling open positions and delaying the announcement of new federal grants — that would not affect vital government services in the short term. As the deadline approaches, President Obama on Thursday telephoned House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, and Senate

It´s official: Visitors to the Facebook page of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have chosen a logo for President Obama´s visit to Israel next month. The winner, above, got 2,600 "likes" beating out two others (below), which garnered 786 and 521, respectively. Netayahu´s office is promising a big social media push around the visit. So far, there has been much more publicity about the trip in Israel than there has been in the United States. According to one group, they should: • “Crippl(e) their leaders (McCrory, Tillis, Berger etc.)” • “Eviscerate the leadership and weaken their ability to govern.” • “Pressure McCrory at every public event.”• “Slam him when he contradicts his promises.” Those were among the talking points and action steps in a memo from a group called Blueprint North Carolina, a partnership of advocacy and policy groups based in Raleigh. The memo was emailed to groups last week with a warning:
