RALEIGH With Republican Gov. Pat McCrory and other conservatives controlling state government, what’s a North Carolina liberal to do? According to one group, they should: • “Crippl(e) their leaders (McCrory, Tillis, Berger etc.)” • “Eviscerate the leadership and weaken their ability to govern.” • “Pressure McCrory at every public event.”• “Slam him when he contradicts his promises.” Those were among the talking points and action steps in a memo from a group called Blueprint North Carolina, a partnership of advocacy and policy groups based in Raleigh. The memo was emailed to groups last week with a warning:

The U.S. has been denied direct access to the only publicly known suspect in custody in connection with the Benghazi terror attack, Fox News has learned, with U.S. interrogators still unable to sit in the same room as the Egypt-held prisoner to ask questions. Abu Ahmed, also known as Mohammed Jamal, is suspected of establishing Islamist training camps in Eastern Libya where militants who took part in the Sept. 11 Benghazi terrorist attack were able to train. Ahmed is not suspected of directly taking part in the attack which left four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, dead.

A French author has written in graphic detail about her eight-month affair with disgraced IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, calling the relationship "field work" for a controversial new book. The book by Argentinian-born Marcela Iacub, a columnist with the left-wing daily Liberation, was denounced by Strauss-Kahn and the wife he has separated from, journalist Anne Sinclair. In "Beauty and the Beast," due to be released on February 27, Iacub says she had a relationship with Strauss-Kahn from January to August 2012, in the midst of the scandal over accusations he sexually assaulted a New York hotel maid.

When First Lady Michelle Obama steps out of her White House Picture Frame on her end of February nationwide tour, to take credit for not only halting—but reversing—childhood obesity, folk should be thinking “fertilizer”. The White House crediting Obama’s failed Let’s Move initiative as salvation for obese children everywhere is well fertilized with the same matter fertilizing her White House ‘organic’ garden. Sludge (human excrement) has fertilized the White House garden ever since the Clintons were in residence.

Tim Tebow announced on Twitter that he will no longer appear at First Baptist Church of Dallas after it caused a national uproar among journalists and gay marriage supporters. The announcement blindsided church officials and led some Christian leaders to wonder if Tebow was appeasing those who don’t support the biblical definition of marriage. “While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ’s unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April,

Atlanta — For those 65 and older, this season´s flu shot is only 9 percent effective against the most common and dangerous flu bug, according to a startling new government report. Flu vaccine tends to protect younger people better than older ones and never works as well as other kinds of vaccines. But experts say the preliminary results for seniors are disappointing and highlight the need for a better vaccine. For all age groups, the vaccine´s effectiveness is moderate at 56 percent, which is nearly as well as other flu seasons, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

Atlanta — A new proposal by state Sen. Cecil Staton would take taxing power away from a Bibb County school board beset by “dysfunction” and give the county commission oversight of education funding. The move drew immediate charges of racism and circumventing the will of voters. “We do know that we have too much dysfunction on our school board. We do know that we have way too much money being spent on administration,” and too much spending is pushing the budget into the red, said Staton, R-Macon. East Passyunk Avenue was not always the vibrant South Philly commercial corridor it is today, with its chic boutiques, cafes and trendy restaurants. Just ask chef Lynn Rinaldi. Rinaldi, 48, grew up on 12th Street near Tasker, not too far from the bustling strip where she and her husband own two restaurants, Izumi and Paradiso. And she could be hit particularly hard under the Actual Value Initiative, a new property-tax system based on market values. The three-story building where Paradiso is situated, on Passyunk near Tasker Street, was assessed at $100,000 for 2013 and valued at $505,000 for 2014.

It’s been almost seven months since a bomb exploded on a strip of dirt in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Leonard Anderson can only remember a reassuring voice. The Chester native and Northwestern High graduate has seen the ambush and its aftermath on film, though: The man behind the voice putting a tourniquet on Anderson’s leg as a medic tended to the other, listening to his own cries for help and his dog’s whines of worry. The blast that severely wounded the military dog handler was captured on film by one of four camera crews that were embedded with front line troops last year.

For the past five months, the Republican message on foreign policy message has been defined by a single word: Benghazi. Ever since the deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. compound in that Libyan city, Republicans have obsessed over the episode. Mitt Romney made Benghazi a favorite talking point in the 2012 campaign home stretch. More recently, Republicans have invoked Benghazi to shoot down one would-be cabinet nominee, Susan Rice, and delay two others, Chuck Hagel and John Brennan. They have dragged a parade of administration officials, including Hillary Clinton

Which United States president will go down in history as the greatest humanitarian to have served in the office? The Republican Herbert Hoover is often known as the "Great Humanitarian" for his work administering famine relief in post-World War I Europe (and Bolshevik Russia) in the 1920s — but he did all that before he actually became president. Others might make the case for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Democrat who succeeded Hoover in the White House, whose New Deal initiatives relieved poverty and sickness on a grand scale within the United States.

Flanked by state and local police officers and firefighters in full uniform, President Obama predicted Tuesday that even a 1 percent cut in overall government spending would have dire consequences. "Emergency responders like the ones who are here today -- their ability to help communities respond to and recover from disasters will be degraded," Obama warned. "Thousands of teachers and educators will be laid off," he continued. "I know that sometimes all this squabbling in Washington seems very abstract, and in the abstract, people like the idea, there must be some spending we can cut,

Morning Joe ventured into well-trodden territory on Thursday when they discussed the current state of the GOP and the type of leader the party needs to revitalize itself. One strong leader is all the party needs, the panel agreed. Specifically, one who’s unafraid of confronting members of the party who make outrageous remarks (a là Allen West). “If I’m a Republican, I want everybody to run for president,” James Carville asserted, noting that someone needs to stand out after beating everyone else. TIMBUKTU, Mali - One of the last things the bearded fighters did before leaving this city was to drive to the market where traders lay their carpets out in the sand. The al-Qaida extremists bypassed the brightly-colored, high-end synthetic floor coverings and stopped their pickup truck in front of a man selling more modest mats woven from desert grass, priced at $1.40 apiece. There they bought two bales of 25 mats each, and asked him to bundle them on top of the car, along with a stack of sticks.

Key senators are exploring an immigration bill that would force every U.S. worker—citizen or not—to carry a high-tech identity card that could use fingerprints or other personal markers to prove a person´s legal eligibility to work. The idea, signaled only in vaguely worded language from senators crafting a bipartisan immigration bill, has privacy advocates and others concerned that the law would create a national identity card that, in time, could track Americans at airports, hospitals and through other facets of their lives. The lawmakers haven´t committed to the "biometric" ID card, and are wary of any element
