Taxpayers have already paid for the upkeep of her 11 children and for a purpose-built six-bedroom home to move them all into. And yesterday it emerged the state is also providing jobless Heather Frost with enough money and time to keep her own horse – something that many families can only dream of. Miss Frost, 37, apparently has the means to keep a grey mare called Annie, which she bought last year. The paddock fees, food and vet bills are estimated to total around £200 per month.(Snip) A worker at the paddock claimed Miss Frost had recently arranged

Two key national security nominations by President Obama are up for confirmation following Congress‘ recess this week: former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel to be secretary of defense, and John O. Brennan, the president’s key counterterrorism adviser, to be the director of the CIA. Both candidates have had to address issues based on their past and current activities and associations. Troublingly, a number of questions still remain unanswered. One explosive issue is a report by John Guandolo that broke last week on Tom Trento’s “TrentoVision Show” and also was carried by Glenn Beck on Feb. 11. The report stated

A 20-year-old college student has been identified as the ruthless killer who gunned down three people during a chaotic murder and carjacking spree before turning the gun on himself. Ali Syed, of Ladera Ranch, California, was identified by police this afternoon, hours after the early morning massacre that began at his parents´ home. His 25-minute shooting reign of terror through Orange County left a bloody trail of dead and injured victims in a series of carjackings and gunfire, police have said. Authorities reported at least five places where victims had been shot in the early morning violence

New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie said he and Democrat Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo have “a lot of the same values,” but dismissed the notion that he and Cuomo agree on “98 percent of the issues.” Christie was criticized after he was quoted in the Glen Falls New York Chronicle last week, saying, “I’m not much different from Andrew Cuomo. I probably agree with him on 98 percent of the issues.” During a press conference on Tuesday, Feb. 12, Christie implied he was quoted incorrectly, saying he and Gov. Cuomo only share similar backgrounds.

Politico writers Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen are on to something with their feature published today about President Obama’s mastery of the mainstream media. Their conclusion that the president and his staff have broken new ground in manipulating journalists and shaping favorable coverage of the administration is so obvious that it is almost inarguable. As I have argued several times over the past four years, no president since John F. Kennedy has enjoyed the sort of advantage or lack of serious scrutiny that the president has received. Vandehei and Allen are right when they point out that the calculated leaks

HOWARD FINEMAN: I´ve watched over the years, as succeeding administrations take more and more territory and more and more sort of power for themselves to determine the rules and the rights of the conversation. Even reporters asking simple questions, simple direct factual questions of low-ranking administration officials, have a hard time getting answers. I know this working at The Huffington Post, we have a big bureau now, we have a lot of reporters throughout digging all the time. It´s hard to get answers to simple questions because this White House does try to control the flow of information.

"He´s just a wonderful person to be around. And we won," Woods said at a press conference ahead of the Match Play Championship, according to Sports Illustrated. Woods also joked that Obama is "an avid golfer, and so am I." The comments by the 14-time major tournament champion were the first window

In 2009, the Obama administration gave $24.8 million in stimulus tax credits to GE’s famous “Appliance Park” factory compound. VP Joe Biden toured the plant as a stimulus success declaring: So those who talk about this is big government, this is big government giving a little bit of help to jump start America to lead the world in the 21st century…In 2010, Appliance Park won a $2.5 stimulus grant. In 2011, a Commerce Department official toured Appliance Park touting Obama’s push to increase U.S. manufacturing. Then in 2012, GE CEO and Obama Jobs Czar Jeff Immelt announced

War On Terror: Iranian-backed Shiite terrorists aligning with Iraq´s prime minister, and the Taliban´s likely return in Afghanistan, are milestone events. President Obama is engineering a double U.S. defeat. Future historians — if there is enough freedom in the world of the future for the profession to endure — will long debate whether Obama´s foreign policy was childishly naive or spectacularly sinister. At the Democratic convention last year, Obama claimed he "blunted the Taliban´s momentum in Afghanistan." But with the United Nations´ civilian war deaths report revealing this week a 20% increase in women and girls killed or hurt

American politics went a bit silly over the weekend. A draft bill leaked from the White House (policy is rarely “announced” anymore; it “drips”) that suggests the administration is cooking up his own immigration proposal. The Republicans went wild, accusing Obama of undermining bipartisan congressional efforts with egocentric tomfoolery. “Does the president want a result?” asked Senator McCain. “Or does he want another cudgel to beat up Republicans?” Of course, he wants both--that’s how politics works. Part of the story here is that the President is trying to upstage the Republicans by driving his own agenda, something he’s been doing

A week from now, a dramatic new federal policy is set to go into effect that threatens U.S. national security, thousands of jobs and more. In a bit of irony, President Obama stood Tuesday with first responders who could lose their jobs if the policy goes into effect. Most Americans are just hearing about this Washington creation for the first time: the sequester. What they might not realize from Mr. Obama´s statements is that it is a product of the president´s own failed leadership. The sequester is a wave of deep spending cuts scheduled to hit on March 1.

Gun Control: On his way to a play date with the world´s most famous golfer, President Obama stops in America´s most violent city to push universal background checks that Chicago´s violent street gangs will totally ignore. Janay McFarlane, 18, was killed late Friday just hours after her younger sister joined a group of teens onstage for President Obama´s speech in Chicago on gun violence. McFarlane was shot to death hours after her little sister, Destini, 14, sat just feet away as Obama spoke in the aftermath of the similar murder of Hadiya Pendleton.

President Obama returned from a long weekend with his golfing buddies on Tuesday to take up his by now familiar political stand: If Republicans don´t raise taxes in return for more spending, the world will end. We wish he´d stayed on the putting green. Flanked by emergency medical personnel, Mr. Obama made his usual threat of Armageddon if automatic spending cuts go forward on March 1. Americans can expect more such melodrama in the coming days, so as a public service we thought we´d break down the President´s three biggest political tricks.

Bias: As of Tuesday, U.S. gasoline prices had increased for 32 straight days. The media, however, aren´t interested. They would be, though, if a Republican — particularly a Bush — were in the White House. According to the American Automobile Association, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.748 Tuesday, up from $3.730 on Monday and about 15 cents higher than a week ago. A month ago that same gallon cost $3.304 and a year back it was $3.565. It was $1.83 a gallon the day before Obama was first inaugurated.

Some of you may have caught an impassioned, frustrating and despairing piece I wrote the other day wondering why I bother. It was a variation on the point I made in this blogpost on Obama´s mendacity, which I´ll repeat because it seems to me a pretty accurate diagnosis of just how deeply we´re in it: I´ll tell you what I fear. I think we have now reached that stage of last-days-of-the-Roman-Empire intellectual and moral depravity where almost no one in our dominant corporate/political/financier/lawyer class believes it´s worthwhile or even possible to do the right thing any more.

Is that a note of desperation creeping into Barack Obama’s voice as he stages another carefully-choreographed event at the White House to berate Congress for failing to live up to its responsibilities to the American people? Flanked by rows of uniformed "first responders" Mr Obama warned that the so-called sequester--the $85bn of cuts that kick in a week on Friday--would “jeopardize our military readiness [and]…. eviscerate job- creating investments in education and energy and medical research.” All true, but this grandstanding already becoming a habit of the Obama second term: abandon the business of actually cutting a deal

An armed couple who stormed a business in Michigan wielding guns were forced to flee when a member of staff pulled out a semi-automatic rifle. According to police, the pair entered the tax preparation business brandishing their firearms but little did they know the security guard was carrying an AR-15. After sudden panic, the guard ran at the attackers and let off two shots resulting in the terrified duo running out of the premises before they could harm anyone. The gunfight was caught on surveillance video and has once again sparked the debate on gun ownership in the U.S.

The GOP´s chances of winning the White House in 2016 are linked more closely to the political fortunes of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie than those of Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. Rubio is the Tea Party wunderkind who was tapped by Republicans to give the GOP response to President Obama's State of the Union Address. He began his retort with a dusted off reference to his parents' emigration from Cuba to the United States. During his political ascendancy in Florida, Rubio often talked of how his mom and dad fled that Caribbean island after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.

DETROIT— A state-appointed review team has determined Detroit is in a financial emergency, paving the way for Republican Gov. Rick Snyder to appoint an emergency manager. The team released its findings Tuesday, saying in a report to Snyder that "no satisfactory plan exists to resolve a serious financial problem." Detroit faces a $327 million budget deficit in the current fiscal year and chronic cash-flow issues that have threatened to leave the city without money to pay its workers or other bills. The review team pointed to the city´s ongoing cash crisis.

CRANSTON, R.I.- A U.S. pickle maker says it has agreed to stop calling a variety of small pickles "midgets" following a complaint by a Rhode Island woman. Chelley Martinka of Cranston began her campaign in December after she spotted a jar of Cains Kosher Dill Midgets in a supermarket, The Providence Journal reported Tuesday. Martinka has a 10-month-old daughter with dwarfism, which means she will be very short of stature. Martinka called and wrote Gedney Foods, the Minnesota company that owns the Cains brand, created a YouTube video and launched a blog.

A three-time deportee from the Dominican Republic who’s been charged with trafficking heroin in Massachusetts will be arraigned in federal court today for illegally reentering the United States for a fourth time. Juan Miguel Laboy, who is believed to be 38 or 39 years old, was spotted in Lawrence last month by a special agent from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, according to court documents. He was traced to an apartment complex in Methuen, where authorities allege he used money orders to pay rent for two units. Laboy was first deported from Louisiana in 2006, and then
