The farmer vs. Monsanto:
A Supreme Court showdown
St. Louis Post-Dispatch [MO], by Georgnia Gustin    Original Article

When farmer Vernon Hugh Bowman walked into an Indiana courtroom four years ago to face off against biotechnology giant Monsanto Co., he argued in his own defense. Today, standing in the U.S. Supreme Court, Bowman, 75, will have a fleet of attorneys beside him — and the eyes of the business world on his case. The hearings bring the Creve Coeur-based company into the country’s highest court, and could have consequences that go well beyond the company’s interests, and beyond agriculture. In 2007, Monsanto sued Bowman, saying he infringed on its patent when he planted the offspring

Families look for relief

WASHINGTON- If America is a nation of immigrants, it´s also a nation of immigrants´ husbands, wives, parents and children - and their brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews too. That could begin to change under legislation being written in the Senate, where the nation´s longstanding emphasis on family-based immigration is coming under scrutiny. Unlike most other industrialized nations, the U.S. awards a much larger proportion of green cards to family members of U.S. citizens and permanent residents than to foreigners with job prospects here. About two-thirds of permanent legal immigration to the U.S. is family-based, compared with about 15 percent

LINCOLN, Neb.-- U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska announced Monday that he will not seek re-election in 2014, saying he wants a "quieter time" to focus on his family following a busy political career that included stints as governor and President George W. Bush´s agriculture secretary. The Nebraska Republican announced that he was retiring from the Senate after one term. He said he and his wife, Stephanie, had decided that the time had come to end a public career that has spanned more than half of his life.

He may have been trying to parlay his turn at giving the State Of The Union response into the start of a presidential campaign, but Marco Rubio chalked up an accomplishment last Tuesday night that few Republican politicians — or activists, for that matter — can lay claim to: creating, and embracing, a moment in culture. After he took that dastardly, ostensibly “career-killing” sip of water on air, you could almost smell the avalanche of media coverage as it slowly wound its way across the landscape. They were honing in on a public foible like Kardashians to a camera.

The background for this case is the German war on homeschooling that has led some families to seek political asylum in the United States where homeschooling is still legal for now. While the Obama Administration refuses to expel illegal aliens who have committed felonies and welcomes in immigrants with AIDS, European Christians who don’t like the compulsory indoctrination of their children are not their cup of tea. The Romeikes’ case is now before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, with the US government seeking to revoke their asylum and force them to return to

In a mistake that probably wasn’t a mistake, a Washington state bill sponsored by liberal Democrats contained a little-noticed provision that would have called for the police to have the right to search private citizens’ home once per year if they own certain types of guns. According to Senate Bill 5737: In order to continue to possess an assault weapon that was legally possessed on the effective date of this section, the person possessing shall ... safely and securely store the assault weapon. In the first year of the crisis, only a few Palestinians headed to Syria through Turkey to join the fight against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, the sources said. Recently, however, there has been an increase in the number of Palestinians who left the Gaza Strip to join the anti- Assad rebel forces, the sources added. Happy President´s Day! It´s a good day to be an American--hello, federal holiday--and even better to be (former) president. The guys who once occupied the White House tend to rake in a lot of cash once they leave, and many come in with plenty on hand. The office has almost always been exclusive to those who can afford to costs of running for it, and this year´s updated list of the wealthiest presidents shows just how rich those men are. It says something that had he been elected, Mitt Romney, whose extraordinary wealth was

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the White House doesn’t necessarily have to confess to killing American citizens by unarmed drones. It all depends on the situation, she said in reply to a Huffington Post reporter who asked if President Obama´s administration should acknowledge when it targets a U.S. citizen in a drone strike, the Washington Examiner reported. “Maybe, it just depends,” she reportedly said. “People just want to be protected.” She also said that such disclosure “depends on the timing, because that’s right — it’s all about the timing.” At least one Republican House colleague is outraged.

Will higher taxes on the rich derail

SAN FRANCISCO — If there’s anyplace in the country where rising tax rates should choke off an economic recovery, it’s California. On top of the federal tax hikes that kicked in last month, the state has just raised income taxes on its wealthiest residents to the highest levels in the nation, a move conservatives warn will drive millionaires and their companies to other states, taking jobs and growth with them. The increases come as California’s economy continues a remarkable turnaround. A year ago, the state was a mess, with double-digit unemployment, a bottoming-out housing market and scary budget deficits

PALM CITY, Fla. — In a gym usually home to the Hyde Park Academy Thunderbirds, President Obama spoke about his own home late last week — and the trouble it faces. He warned students and teachers that the fragility of families, the easy violence of guns, and a threatened education system are failing Chicago’s South Side, where he once worked as a community organizer and began his family. Change “requires us reflecting internally about who we are and what we believe in,” he told the rows of uniformed students lining the blue breeze-block walls in bleachers.

USDA/Mexican consulates to

The United States Department of Agriculture has been working to dispel immigrants’ concerns that getting on Food Stamps will harm their chances of becoming U.S. citizens. The USDA addresses those fears in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamp, brochures it distributes to Mexican consulates as part of its “partnership” with the Mexican government “to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance.” In one portion of the brochure, USDA’s text asks, “If I get on SNAP benefits, will I be a “public charge?’”

As much as President Obama may have been hoping that the magically redistributive powers meant to be deployed via ObamaCare would go off without a hitch, it’s a pretty predictable phenomenon of human nature that people are going to act in accordance with their rational self-interest — and with loopholes like these, employers are obviously going to be on the lookout for saving as much money as they can. It’s been a fairly frequent practice for larger companies to self-insure, i.e., take on most of the financial risks of providing health benefits to their employees sans traditional insurance programs

Although every holiday may seem like Obama Day to Chris Matthews, the MSNBC host used the date often devoted to Lincoln and Washington as an excuse to wonder if the current President is headed to Mount Rushmore. Finally, after a 12-year delay caused by opponents of genetically modified foods, so-called “golden rice” with vitamin A will be grown in the Philippines. Over those 12 years, about 8 million children worldwide died from vitamin A deficiency. Are anti-GM advocates not partly responsible? Golden rice is the most prominent example in the global controversy over GM foods, which pits a technology with some risks but incredible potential against the resistance of feel-good campaigning.

A shift in Denver: Limits on

As communities across the country beef up police presence in schools, Denver may become a national counterpoint Tuesday, when officials plan to sign an agreement to limit the role of law enforcement at the city’s schools — a move that could mean fewer students will face arrest or citation for disciplinary infractions. Denver’s effort comes in a metropolitan area that is often at the forefront of debates over school violence since the mass shootings at Columbine High School in 1999. More recently, the massacre last July at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., again pushed security concerns

TODAY’S Republicans are very good at tending the fire of Ronald Reagan’s memory but not nearly as good at learning from his successes. They slavishly adhere to the economic program that Reagan developed to meet the challenges of the late 1970s and early 1980s, ignoring the fact that he largely overcame those challenges, and now we have new ones. It’s because Republicans have not moved on from that time that Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, in their responses to the State of the Union address last week, offered so few new ideas.
