Obama using new
political freedom to
tackle domestic agenda
Washington Post, by Scott Wilson    Original Article

PALM CITY, Fla. — In a gym usually home to the Hyde Park Academy Thunderbirds, President Obama spoke about his own home late last week — and the trouble it faces. He warned students and teachers that the fragility of families, the easy violence of guns, and a threatened education system are failing Chicago’s South Side, where he once worked as a community organizer and began his family. Change “requires us reflecting internally about who we are and what we believe in,” he told the rows of uniformed students lining the blue breeze-block walls in bleachers.

USDA/Mexican consulates to
immigrants: Don’t worry, food
stamps won’t affect citizenship chances
Daily Caller, by Caroline May    Original Article

The United States Department of Agriculture has been working to dispel immigrants’ concerns that getting on Food Stamps will harm their chances of becoming U.S. citizens. The USDA addresses those fears in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamp, brochures it distributes to Mexican consulates as part of its “partnership” with the Mexican government “to help educate eligible Mexican nationals living in the United States about available nutrition assistance.” In one portion of the brochure, USDA’s text asks, “If I get on SNAP benefits, will I be a “public charge?’”

Another blow to ObamaCare:
The increasing appeal

As much as President Obama may have been hoping that the magically redistributive powers meant to be deployed via ObamaCare would go off without a hitch, it’s a pretty predictable phenomenon of human nature that people are going to act in accordance with their rational self-interest — and with loopholes like these, employers are obviously going to be on the lookout for saving as much money as they can. It’s been a fairly frequent practice for larger companies to self-insure, i.e., take on most of the financial risks of providing health benefits to their employees sans traditional insurance programs

U.S. office supply chains Office Depot Inc. and Naperville-based OfficeMax Inc. are in advanced discussions for a merger, a person familiar with the matter said on Monday. A deal could come as soon as this week, that person said, adding that the talks were ongoing and could still fall apart. Currently, the deal is expected to be structured as a stock-for-stock transaction, the person said. Neither company responded to requests seeking comment. One of OfficeMax´s top shareholders, Neuberger Berman, said it would support a merger with Office Depot depending on terms of the deal,

Although every holiday may seem like Obama Day to Chris Matthews, the MSNBC host used the date often devoted to Lincoln and Washington as an excuse to wonder if the current President is headed to Mount Rushmore. On President´s Day, Matthews thrilled, "Is Barack Obama going for it? Is he set on becoming one of the great presidents in history?" [See video below. MP3 audio here.] The cable anchor, who famously declared that Obama caused a "thrill going up my leg," first declared, "I´m not talking about Mt. Rushmore but perhaps the level right below it."

Finally, after a 12-year delay caused by opponents of genetically modified foods, so-called “golden rice” with vitamin A will be grown in the Philippines. Over those 12 years, about 8 million children worldwide died from vitamin A deficiency. Are anti-GM advocates not partly responsible? Golden rice is the most prominent example in the global controversy over GM foods, which pits a technology with some risks but incredible potential against the resistance of feel-good campaigning.

A shift in Denver: Limits on

As communities across the country beef up police presence in schools, Denver may become a national counterpoint Tuesday, when officials plan to sign an agreement to limit the role of law enforcement at the city’s schools — a move that could mean fewer students will face arrest or citation for disciplinary infractions. Denver’s effort comes in a metropolitan area that is often at the forefront of debates over school violence since the mass shootings at Columbine High School in 1999. More recently, the massacre last July at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., again pushed security concerns

Gasoline prices across the state are again approaching the loathed $4-per-gallon mark. That is 60 cents higher than a month ago and nearly 50 cents more than a year ago, according to the auto club’s Daily Fuel Gauge report. Prices are averaging $3.88 a gallon in the metro Detroit area. Pricier fuel can be found in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Jackson. The national average is $3.73 a gallon for regular unleaded.

Reaganism After Reagan

TODAY’S Republicans are very good at tending the fire of Ronald Reagan’s memory but not nearly as good at learning from his successes. They slavishly adhere to the economic program that Reagan developed to meet the challenges of the late 1970s and early 1980s, ignoring the fact that he largely overcame those challenges, and now we have new ones. It’s because Republicans have not moved on from that time that Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, in their responses to the State of the Union address last week, offered so few new ideas.

Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is under "tight medical supervision," as his struggle with bipolar disorder has been compounded by recent legal troubles, his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, said today in a statement. "He is struggling with the highs and lows of his bipolar disorder," Jackson said. "Please pray for him, Sandi and their children." Jackson Jr.´s legal troubles came to a head on Friday, when federal prosecutors accused him of misusing more than $750,000 in campaign funds, and accused his wife Sandi of filing false tax returns. They are both expected to sign plea deals with prosecutors

In 1988, Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis lost his presidential race in no small part due to the fact that he had paroled violent criminals. Taking a page from Dukakis’ book, California Governor Jerry Brown is now making a habit of paroling convicted murders. According to Brown, he expunged the records of 128 felons last year, and also gave the greenlight to parole for 377 convicted murders, a full 81 percent of all those the parole board recommended go free. Virtually all other California governors have rejected such pleas from the parole board. Some of the murderers who will

Tuesday night a state House committee took the first step towards banning them. RUSH: Now, before we get to that, I want to offer continuing evidence of my theorem that I put forth last week. I have a couple of stories here. Scott Rasmussen´s latest poll on Obama approval finds that Obama´s approval rating is at 54%. Strongly approve is 33%, and strongly disapprove is 36%, but the total approval (and this is a poll of likely voters) is at 54%. Despite the fact that people disagree with the direction of the country and the deficit, unemployment, gun control and all of that, Obama´s still at 54% approval. Up until last week, when I raised the curtain on this mystery, everybody asked,

That page, dubbed You Got Knocked the F*ck Out Man, includes videos from WorldStarHipHop, the shock website that two weeks ago posted a savage video of a group of thugs stripping and whipping a Newark boy with a belt. Big Bootie Freaks, meanwhile, is filled with photos of women with large derrières.

Lansing — Illegal immigrants brought to the country as children can start applying for Michigan driver´s licenses and state IDs this week. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson´s office will begin accepting applications Tuesday. President Barack Obama last year announced a policy letting illegal immigrants apply for temporary work permits if they were brought to the U.S. as children. But a small number of states, including Michigan, resisted allowing those immigrants to have driver´s licenses. Johnson, a Republican, changed her mind recently after the Obama administration clarified the younger immigrants´ legal status. To be eligible, immigrants must prove they arrived in the U.S.
