A spokesman for Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni group, claimed responsibility for the bomb in Quetta, which caused casualties in the town´s main bazaar, a school and a computer center. Police said most of the victims were Shi´ites. Burned school bags and books were strewn around. (Snip) "This is a continuation of terrorism against Shi´ites." "I saw many bodies of women and children," said an eyewitness at a hospital.

Two Russian bombers have been caught circling the US island of Guam in a ´highly unusual´ move some are claiming shows President Vladimir Putin´s growing strategic assertiveness towards America. The aircraft - Russian Tu-95 Bear-H bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons - flew over the western Pacific island just hours before Obama´s state of the union address on Tuesday and were intercepted by Air Force F-15 jets. Officials insisted the surprise training mission ´stayed professional´ and said it was unclear whether the bombers were equipped with nuclear missiles. The bombers remained in international air space, they said.

Rachel Maddow‘s preparation for each of her MSNBC shows is well-documented. Her rise in the ratings is a direct result of this meticulous preparation…around finding facts (instead of noise) to support her nightly claims of GOP hypocrisy. On some cable shows, there’s no there there. With Maddow, while mistakes are made as they are on every other program, there’s some real meat to chew on. (Snip) Which is why it’s disappointing to see her get down in the gutter with nonsense like the Marco Rubio “Watergate” loop that dominated her show on Wednesday night.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Saturday he is traveling to Jordan and Israel, another high-profile event for the senator considered an emerging leader in the Republican Party and a potential 2016 presidential candidate. The first-term senator said the trip is part of his official duties as a member of the chamber’s Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees. “America´s friendship with Israel is a truly special one, and we must continue to do all we can to support this beacon of democracy, religious freedom and free enterprise in the heart of an unstable region,” Rubio said.

A new report out of South Africa indicates that Oscar Pistorius carried Reeva Steenkamp downstairs from the bathroom where he had allegedly shot her, and attempted to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while attempting to save her life. The report comes via Beeld, an Afrikaaans-language newspaper in South Africa. The newspaper reported that Steenkamp was still breathing when local security guards and neighbors arrived at Pistorius´ house, but died shortly afterward. She had been shot four times through the bathroom door. While the first reports indicated that Pistorius had believed

I´m a Catholic, but I´ll admit it (or should I say "confess" it?): When Pope Benedict XVI announced his pending resignation, my first thought wasn´t religious. It was in fact downright superficial. "There goes the best-dressed pontiff ever!" During his nearly eight years on the throne of St. Peter, Benedict has always looked absolutely perfect, sartorially speaking, whether garbed in elaborate vestments for an Easter liturgy or clad in the simple but meticulously tailored white caped cassock (it´s called a "simar" in church lingo) that he wears on more ordinary occasions. He´s been the Duke of Windsor

Vogue revealed this fact in its feature of Castro and his twin brother Rep. I was struck by one particular moment during President Obama’s State of the Union address. The president proposed a $1 billion investment to build a new National Network for Manufacturing Innovation to spur high-tech manufacturing in America. (Snip) Message: There is no doubt our economy is primarily being held back by the deleveraging and drop in demand that resulted from the 2008 financial crisis. President Obama will take a golf lesson from Tiger Woods´ old swing coach this weekend during a quick golf getaway to Florida. Butch Harmon and his son, Claude III, are flying in to work with Obama at their School of Golf at the newly-redesigned Floridian golf course in Palm City. Tim Rosaforte of Golf Digest reports Obama requested a lesson with the Harmons through an aide. He´ll be the latest in a long line of presidents to tee it up with Butch. "I´ve played golf with Ike, Nixon, Ford and President Bush 41," Harmon told Rosaforte.

Gail Collins believes it’s long past time for government to do more to subsidize preschool, as President Obama suggested during the State of the Union. Her big regret is that this wasn’t accomplished in the early 1970s, when it was being advanced by Walter Mondale. As Collins writes about this topic, she refers to these government proposals as part of the “drive to make quality preschool education available to every family in the United States.” Because it’s just that easy, right? Where does Collins—and Obama for that matter—get the child-like faith that somehow getting the federal government

If I make it to 100, I hope I´m healthy enough to wait in line for several hours to vote. I also hope I´m fortunate enough to live in a place that isn´t so callous and corrupt that it would expect me to wait in line for several hours to vote. By that measure, retirement in Florida seems out the question, at least for now. So does Virginia. (Snip) The North Miami resident waited three hours to vote at her local library. Who decides who will be killed by U.S. drone attacks? Protectors of civil liberties have expressed dissatisfaction with the present system of unreviewed presidential discretion, whether in the hands of George W. Bush or Barack Obama. Must an individual have attacked America or Americans to make the "kill list"? Are the standards higher if the target is a U.S. citizen? How much "collateral damage" is acceptable? And, above all, how comfortable are we with one person, albeit the commander in chief, making these decisions? Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence

If the spending sequesters happen, get ready for the great beef shortage of 2013. The Obama administration said Thursday that the across-the-board cuts would mean furloughs for food safety inspectors, and if those inspectors aren’t on the job, meat-processing plants can’t open. That means 2 billion pounds of beef and pork and potentially more than 3 billion pounds of poultry will never make it to the market, causing shortages and price spikes across the economy. “This is going to adversely affect every consumer in America,” said Sen. Mark L. Pryor, Arkansas Democrat.

KEY LARGO, Fla. — While hunters stalked the elusive Burmese python through Florida´s Everglades over the past month, state and federal wildlife officials set traps for other animals menacing native wildlife in a fragile ecosystem. The python gets most of the attention in Florida´s animal kingdom and is accused of decimating populations of native mammals in the Everglades, but wildlife officials say other species including feral cats, black-and-white tegu lizards and Cuban tree frogs pose equally serious threats. And while a state-organized Python Challenge was held this year, a Kitty Cat Challenge or

MIAMI— Florida wildlife officials say 68 Burmese pythons were caught and killed during a public hunt for the invasive snakes in the Everglades. That tally might not seem impressive, considering that roughly 1,600 people signed up for the state-sponsored Python Challenge. But Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say the hunt may have prevented thousands more pythons from being born in the Everglades. Female pythons can lay 50 to 100 eggs at a time. The Python Challenge began Jan. 12 and ended Sunday. Wildlife officials said Saturday that the longest python

As stranded Carnival Cruise passengers began finally disembarking in Mobile, Alabama, late Thursday evening, MSNBC had NBC News correspondent Mark Potter on the scene to speak with them. It was inevitable that once the blanks contained in Obamacare began to be filled in, that even Democratic supporters of the law would start running away from it, so toxic it is going to be to any politician who supported it. The unintended — and intended – consequences are proving to be a nightmare for the health insurance consumer and the government seems powerless to do anything about it. A hearing on Thursday of the Senate Finance Committee turned into a Democratic Obamacare bashing-fest as four powerful Democratic Senators “laid into” the administration’s top regulator on new

WASHINGTON- Carrying out the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan will be difficult, with an immense amount of equipment to be moved and no nearby seaport, a general said. President Obama ordered that the U.S. Afghan contingent is to be cut by half over the next year and troops can be flown home, but large pieces of equipment must go by sea, The New York Times reported Thursday. "Afghanistan is not Iraq, and it´s harder," said Lt. Gen. Raymond V. Mason, the Army´s deputy chief of staff for logistics. "Number 1, it´s landlocked. And we have no Kuwait.

Writing in the WSJ earlier this week Ed Lu and Martin Rees remind us that our planet is forever traveling through a dangerous neighborhood (not that the people of Chelyabinsk will need reminding of that), and, quite correctly, argue that we should take a few precautions: …The chance in your lifetime of an even bigger asteroid impact on Earth [than Tunguska in 1908]—with explosive energy of 100 megatons of TNT—is about 1%. Such an impact would deliver many times the explosive energy of all the munitions used in World War II, including the atomic bombs.

Ken Cuccinelli is the Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia and a proud conservative. He was one of the first Tea Party candidates in 2009, and built a national profile for his successful election that year. Since then, he has led the charge by challenging the Obama administration’s expansions of federal power, winning victories for Virginia and the nation. He is now running for Governor and will likely face Democrat Terry McAuliffe, Clinton apparatchik and former Democratic National Committee chair. Mr. Cuccinelli is a Roman Catholic, married for over 20 years with seven children.

The proposed Reproductive Health Act, part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s far ranging Women’s Equality Act, aims to update the state’s decades-old contraception and abortion law.
