MIAMI— Florida wildlife officials say 68 Burmese pythons were caught and killed during a public hunt for the invasive snakes in the Everglades. That tally might not seem impressive, considering that roughly 1,600 people signed up for the state-sponsored Python Challenge. But Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say the hunt may have prevented thousands more pythons from being born in the Everglades. Female pythons can lay 50 to 100 eggs at a time. The Python Challenge began Jan. 12 and ended Sunday. Wildlife officials said Saturday that the longest python

With no solution yet for automatic budget cuts due to kick in March 1, both President Obama and congressional lawmakers have decamped from Washington for vacations. Mr. Obama arrived in Florida Friday night for a four-day, President’s Day weekend of golf lessons and relaxation with a wealthy campaign donor who was once the target of anti-minority bias complaints, while first lady Michelle Obama is vacationing separately in the ski mecca of Aspen, Colo., with their daughters. The president hit the links Saturday morning at the Floridian Golf Club, a private, gated golf community in

As stranded Carnival Cruise passengers began finally disembarking in Mobile, Alabama, late Thursday evening, MSNBC had NBC News correspondent Mark Potter on the scene to speak with them. One young lady during her over three minute interview tried to cite a Bible verse that helped her get through the ordeal, but Potter pulled his microphone away and quickly ended the discussion (video follows with transcript and commentary): MARK POTTER, MSNBC REPORTER: It sounded like you guys handled it pretty well. Were there some passengers who seemed to have a really rough time on board?

It was inevitable that once the blanks contained in Obamacare began to be filled in, that even Democratic supporters of the law would start running away from it, so toxic it is going to be to any politician who supported it. The unintended — and intended – consequences are proving to be a nightmare for the health insurance consumer and the government seems powerless to do anything about it. A hearing on Thursday of the Senate Finance Committee turned into a Democratic Obamacare bashing-fest as four powerful Democratic Senators “laid into” the administration’s top regulator on new

WASHINGTON- Carrying out the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan will be difficult, with an immense amount of equipment to be moved and no nearby seaport, a general said. President Obama ordered that the U.S. Afghan contingent is to be cut by half over the next year and troops can be flown home, but large pieces of equipment must go by sea, The New York Times reported Thursday. "Afghanistan is not Iraq, and it´s harder," said Lt. Gen. Raymond V. Mason, the Army´s deputy chief of staff for logistics. "Number 1, it´s landlocked. And we have no Kuwait.

Writing in the WSJ earlier this week Ed Lu and Martin Rees remind us that our planet is forever traveling through a dangerous neighborhood (not that the people of Chelyabinsk will need reminding of that), and, quite correctly, argue that we should take a few precautions: …The chance in your lifetime of an even bigger asteroid impact on Earth [than Tunguska in 1908]—with explosive energy of 100 megatons of TNT—is about 1%. Such an impact would deliver many times the explosive energy of all the munitions used in World War II, including the atomic bombs.

Ken Cuccinelli is the Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia and a proud conservative. He was one of the first Tea Party candidates in 2009, and built a national profile for his successful election that year. Since then, he has led the charge by challenging the Obama administration’s expansions of federal power, winning victories for Virginia and the nation. He is now running for Governor and will likely face Democrat Terry McAuliffe, Clinton apparatchik and former Democratic National Committee chair. Mr. Cuccinelli is a Roman Catholic, married for over 20 years with seven children.

The "New York Times" and BuzzFeed have some kind of relationship going on, but that still doesn´t explain the long, wet French kiss the "Times" gave BuzzFeed Politics editor-in-chief Ben Smith yesterday. It´s just a fact that when the left-wing media covers the left-wing media, it´s usually in this way -- without criticism or skepticism. Reading this you´d think Smith had never been involved in any kind of scandal or done anything unethical. (Snip) The term invented by Breitbart News does make its "New York Times" debut, however. The proposed Reproductive Health Act, part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s far ranging Women’s Equality Act, aims to update the state’s decades-old contraception and abortion law. The bill is sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers. Unsurprisingly, the measure has generated no small amount of controversy. The bill is being attacked by anti-abortion activists as too radical. (Snip) Since the rise of the Tea Party in the 2010 election, there has been a nationwide spike in measures aimed at further restricting abortion rights. “There are concerted efforts in Washington

Ten years ago, Victoria´s Secret sold lingerie to women in their twenties. Today, the lingerie retailer is luring in young girls by offering underwear that is cute instead of sexy, reports Sapna Maheshwari at Bloomberg News. The highly-popular Pink line is technically marketed toward college girls ages 18 to 22. “When somebody’s 15 or 16-years-old, what do they want to be?” Stuart Burgdoerfer, CFO of Victoria´s Secret, said at a conference last month. “They want to be older, and they want to be cool like the girl in college, and that’s part of the magic of what we do at Pink.”

Lingering hopes that state resistance would yet derail Obamacare were recently dealt a major and possibly fatal blow. Unable to withstand the law´s powerful and perverse incentives, six Republican governors dropped their opposition and agreed to cram more people into Medicaid. Unless the law collapses under the weight of its own internal contradictions, or the country collapses under it, it might well be a fait accompli. Medicaid, the joint state-federal program for the poor, has been devouring state budgets for decades. Indeed, a December survey by the National Council of State Legislatures

CHARLESTON, S.C.— Elizabeth Colbert Busch remembers watching the funeral of Robert Kennedy on television, with her younger brother Stephen — now the star of Comedy Central´s "The Colbert Report" — sitting in her lap. She said to herself, "Someday, if they let women run for office, I´m going to." Now, she´s making that dream a reality with a run for Congress. And she isn´t worried her brother´s fame will overshadow her campaign. "I´m not. I´m so proud of what he is and what he has accomplished," she said in an interview in her campaign office

Tunis - Tens of thousands of supporters of Tunisia´s Islamist-led government marched in the capital on Saturday, one of the biggest in a series of pro-government and opposition rallies sparked by the assassination of a secular politician. The February 6 killing of Chokri Belaid, a human rights lawyer and opposition leader, has thrown Tunisia into political turmoil two years after it staged the first of the "Arab Spring" revolts. Violent protests, in which one policeman was killed, swept Tunisia after the assassination, with crowds attacking Ennahda offices in Tunis and elsewhere.

Even though federal law largely bars illegal immigrants from obtaining Medicaid coverage, the program annually pays out more than $2 billion in free emergency coverage that mostly goes to illegal immigrants, according to Kaiser Health News. The vast majority of the total emergency care reimbursements cover delivering babies, Kaiser reports. Based on a Kaiser data analysis of the states believed to have the greatest populations of illegal immigrants — including California, New York, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Illinois and Florida — more than 100,000 people annually receive

The left wing propaganda machine is a wonder to behold, managing the theoretically impossible feat of propagandizing for Islam at a radical feminist rally. It happened in San Francisco, of course, where government, the media, political organizations -- everything relevant propaganda - is controlled by the left. Zombie, the sharp-eyed and quick-witted anonymous chronicler of the Bay Area left, has published a vastly entertaining and profoundly revealing photo-essay featuring Miss Qu'ran. February 14 used to be Valentine's Day, but this year Eve Ensler hijacked the date to mark the climax

Students at University of Missouri don´t need to cram for exams that fall on Wiccan and Pagan holidays, now that the school has put them on par with Christmas, Thanksgiving and Hanukah. The university’s latest “Guide to Religions: Major Holidays and Suggested Accommodations” — designed to help faculty know when and when not to schedule exams and other student activities — lists eight Wiccan and Pagan holidays and events right alongside more mainstream occasions. I have some very disappointing news for some of the more-virulent foes of sane gun-control legislation. If you’re what the National Rifle Association loves to call a “law-abiding American citizen,” no one is going to take away your guns. Not the federal government. Not the state government. Not the local government. Not the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. Not the United Nations. Not the zombies. Well, OK, I can’t absolutely guarantee what zombies might do, but they move so slowly, you shouldn’t have much trouble keeping them from your firearms.

Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States. The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address. Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said

Hello, I’m Martha Roby. [Snip] As you may know, a series of deep, across-the-board military spending cuts known as ‘the sequester’ will go into effect in less than two weeks. In his State of the Union address, President Obama himself admitted that these cuts were a ´really bad idea.´ What the President failed to mention was that the sequester was his idea, proposed by his administration during the debt limit negotiations in 2011. And now we in the House are calling on the president to join us in replacing his sequester with better, more responsible spending cuts.

Six gun companies have announced plans to stop selling any of their products to any government agency in states that severely limit the rights of private gun ownership. Disappointed with New York State lawmakers and other jurisdictions around the country who have passed strict gun control legislation, the companies—composed of firearm manufacturers, gunsmiths, and sporting goods retailers—have announced these policies in the past week. Their various statements emphasize that such laws create a class of government employees with rights and and a class of citizens without rights
