Federal securities regulators Friday obtained an emergency court order freezing assets in a Switzerland-based trading account that was used to generated more than $1.7 million in "highly suspicious" trading before the surprise acquisition deal for food giant H.J. Heinz. The order came in response to a Securities and Exchange Commission court complaint that targeted as-yet unidentified "foreign traders or traders trading through foreign accounts" who allegedly had illegal inside information about the $28 billion purchase announced Thursday by Warren Buffet´s Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital.

Leaving aside for the moment the likelihood that parties and party politics in America will become moot within the next few years (owing to the emergence of a single party or the country’s dissolution into civil war), conservatives and libertarians are finding themselves at an unpleasant crossroads. While some observers gave up on the leadership of the Republican Party long ago, it is now becoming apparent to rank-and-file Republicans that the GOP leadership and its prominent operatives are wholly complicit in the fundamental transformation of America.

Brentwood - A Portsmouth man received the maximum sentence for attempting to kidnap a woman as she got out of her SUV at a shopping plaza, and almost got ordered to pay for the gun she later bought to protect herself. James Perry, 37, was sentenced to 7½ to 15 years in state prison Thursday, drawing harsh words from Judge N. William Delker about the lifelong fear he imposed on the victim, Katherine Booth. "My only regret in this case is that I can´t sentence you to more than the maximum," Delker said. "You are a complete predator. ... You are a walking example of what society fears

RUSH: TheHill.com: " Obama Waging an ´Endless Campaign´." Where have we heard this? I love this. I must tell you, I love this. I elucidated, enunciated what turns out to be a profound theory on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it´s being picked up now. This is actually just more support for the theory. And what they´re saying is, Obama doesn´t want to govern. He only wants to campaign because governing would make him responsible for what is happening. He doesn´t want to compromise. That would put his name on something.

Former Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. took part in a conspiracy to misuse approximately $750,000 in campaign funds, according to court papers filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Washington. The then-congressman purchased a $43,350 gold-plated, men’s Rolex watch with campaign funds, and also bought $9,587.64 in children’s furniture, and had the items sent to his home in the District, according to the documents. He made direct expenditures from the campaign’s accounts of $57,792.83 for personal expenses, according to court documents. He and a co-conspirator used a campaign credit card

RUSH: This is Bill in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Great to have you here, sir. Hi. CALLER: Thank you very much, Rush, for taking my call. RUSH: You bet. CALLER: I just to say that I don´t share your optimism for our future. I believe in the next 36 months that the Supreme Court will uphold whatever invasive gun laws that Obama seeks to push upon us. I believe that we will lose the House of Representatives in 2014 and I honestly believe that Obama is going to be reelected in 2016.

When we saw the headline "Four Ways ObamaCare Could Still Fail," our reaction was that it sounded like an unrealistically low estimate. But we read the article because we were intrigued because of the source: TalkingPointsMemo.com, a news site with a strong (and acknowledged) liberal Democratic slant. Its framing as friendly criticism makes the piece, by congressional reporter Sahil Kapur, a powerful indictment of ObamaCare. To be sure, it´s not clear Kapur intends to indict ObamaCare, and if he does, he downplays it, presumably in order to avoid alienating his liberal readers or his liberal editors.

A Hispanic Republican senator drinks water on TV, and the media demolish him. A Hispanic Democratic senator is accused of having sex with underage prostitutes, and the media ignores it. Freshman Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, by any definition a rising star in politics, was an obvious choice to deliver the GOP response to the State of the Union address. He’s smart, a great communicator, hard-working, sincere, and proud of his Cuban heritage and his Republican affiliation. He connects his heritage with his reasons for being a Republican in ways that scare the heck Please split headlines

NJ Transit sent four employees to the Super Bowl in New Orleans — including a key rail official who was in charge of the Hoboken terminal when dozens of rail cars and locomotives, left to sit in low-lying yards, were damaged during superstorm Sandy — at a taxpayer cost of $14,505, expense reports show. The bills, obtained by The Record through an Open Public Records Act request, include: $7,800 for lodging from Jan. 31 through Feb. 4, 2013; $5,241 for airfare; $423 in miscellaneous expenses. The intent of the visit was to ground NJ Transit officials in procedures used to handle

"I´m also issuing a new goal for America," declared President Obama at his "State of the Union" on Tuesday. We´ll come to the particular "goal" he "issued" momentarily, but before we do, consider that formulation: Did you know the president of the United States is now in the business of "issuing goals" for his subjects to live up to? Strange how the monarchical urge persists even in a republic two-and-a-third centuries old. Many commentators have pointed out that the modern State of the Union is in fairly obvious mimicry of the Speech from the Throne that precedes a new

Rep. "I have no idea if the President required a sleep aid that night, but if he did, anybody else in America has trouble sleeping, you better get what he had, because it works well," Gohmert said on the House floor. One Democratic representative even worried that global warming could destroy the state of Maryland. “If we do nothing about what is happening, it will destroy our economy, it will destroy our state, and it will have a broad impact not just here in this country but around the world,”

Taxpayer dollars were used to fund a study that painted the Tea Party movement as the spawn of the tobacco lobby -- a premise that Tea Party leaders say is absurd. The study was published earlier this month in the Tobacco Control journal and was formally presented by its authors at an on-campus symposium in San Francisco Feb. 8. "The Tea Party that we see in 2009 actually has decades of influence from tobacco and other corporate interests," co-author Amanda Fallin said at the time, downplaying the notion that the group is just a "spontaneous grassroots movement."

Tenaris announced Friday it will build a $1.5 billion pipe manufacturing plant in Matagorda County to serve drillers in the Eagle Ford and other booming shale plays. Texas Gov. Rick Perry said a $6 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund helped to close the deal, which came down to a contest between Matagorda County and Louisiana. Proximity to the Eagle Ford Shale mattered, said German Cura, president of Tenaris’ North American division, which is based in Houston. But because pipe produced at the plant will be shipped to all of the nation’s shale plays, it wasn’t

Liberal journalists like NBC´s Matt Lauer and CBS´s Scott Pelley have been acting like "whiney crybabies" recently as they lamented Republicans daring to challenge the president for his lack of leadership in tackling the nation´s tremendous national debt. "Toughen up fellas," NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell chided the liberal media on the February 14 edition of Fox News Channel´s Hannity. The Media Research Center president and the Fox News host also discussed how the analysts on MSNBC quickly set out to smear Marco Rubio following his response to the State of the Union. Waxman, who said that Obama’s executive actions would also pressure the GOP, explained that there

An enormous cache of explosive material turned up this week in Gao, one of the northern Malian cities retaken by French and Malian troops. There are varying reports on its complexity and size, but the Associated Press reports the French military pulled about 1,700 pounds of explosive material out of a single building. Although Islamist fighters first withdrew from Gao without heavy fighting more than two weeks ago, they came back in waves last weekend. Last Friday, a suicide bomber set off a device at a security checkpoint. A second suicide bomber detonated a device on Saturday,

I thank you for that inspiration,” Panetta told Clinton at a Pentagon ceremony on Thursday. The House voted Friday to freeze the pay of federal workers for the third year in a row over the objections of congressional Democrats and the Obama administration. Members voted 261-154 in favor of the bill, which would also lock in a pay freeze for members of Congress. It exempts people serving in the military. The bill won significant support from Democrats — 43 voted for it — while 10 Republicans voted against it. The legislation is an attempt to override President Obama´s executive order in December that seeks to give federal workers a 0.5 percent pay
