The mysterious co-ed to whom Steve Cohen was sending what appeared to be flirtatious text messages is, in fact, his daughter. The flirtations were, in fact, the kind of sweet things a dad says to his daughter: Victoria Elizabeth Brink, who used her Twitter account to write that she was seeing Cohen in the House Chamber on television Tuesday night, is also the daughter of a Texas criminal defense lawyer, Cynthia White Sinatra, who ran for Congress in 2006 against Ron Paul. The Memphis Democrat publicly acknowledged his daughter for the first time after receiving permission from her family.

Students and parents at West Liberty University in West Virginia are expressing concern and even outrage over an assignment handed out by professor Stephanie Wolf in which she told her students which sources they couldn’t use in their research. While The New York Times, The Huffington Post and others were given the clear, The Onion and Fox News were the two outlets she said were off limits. Robin Capehart, the president of the university, spoke with Megyn on Thursday’s America Live, expressing his concern over the incident and telling her that “the purpose

Online rumors about a big government munitions purchase are true, sort of. The Homeland Security Department wants to buy more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition in the next four or five years. It says it needs them -- roughly the equivalent of five bullets for every person in the United States -- for law enforcement agents in training and on duty. Published federal notices about the ammo buy have agitated conspiracy theorists since the fall. That´s when conservative radio host Alex Jones spoke of an "arms race against the American people" and said the

I don’t normally like to draw attention to David Corn, the only left-wing operative named after a vegetable often found embedded in feces. But this item is kind of interesting: An internal investigation of FreedomWorks—the prominent conservative advocacy group and super-PAC—has focused on president Matt Kibbe’s management of the organization, his use of its resources, and a controversial book deal he signed, according to former FreedomWorks officials who have met with the private lawyers conducting the probe. One potential topic for the inquiry is a promotional video produced last year under the supervision of Adam Brandon,

First lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are expected to visit the Aspen area over the holiday weekend, according to sources. It is unclear who they will be traveling with and few details were available about the trips, other than Biden is expected to be staying in Snowmass Village, according to sources familiar with the visit who asked not to be identified. In an interview on HuffPost Live Thursday, White House Communications Director Anita Dunn characterized Fox News as a network that is “crumbling.” If you were CNN or MSNBC, would you take these crumbling numbers? Nine out of the top ten highest-rated cable news shows are on Fox. Fox has easily been #1 in cable news for the past 11 years. Fox’s 3:00 AM show hosted by Greg Gutfeld (Red Eye) periodically beats CNN primetime programming. So when January ratings showed that Fox had fallen to a 12-year low, left-leaning media and folks like Ms. Dunn declared it the beginning

The first thing to do is to admit that I’m a Downton Abbey fan. In fact, I’ve watched every episode twice. But in my defense, I counterbalance my Downton viewings with at least one hour spent with my chainsaw for every hour tuned into Masterpiece Classic. One of the first things one notices, if one is a regular viewer of BBC productions, is that Downton is unusually ideologically and religiously balanced.

If we learned anything from the O.J. Simpson affair, it is that sports heroes are not easily separated from their past, epic deeds. Their trials become public arenas, tortuous affairs, and not everyone is willing to believe the worst of them. Even under such a soft, glowing light, however, it does not look good right now for Oscar Pistorius. The Blade Runner is charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, and will appear in court on Friday. Steenkamp, 30, a model for the Capacity Relations agency, was shot four times sometime before dawn in Pistorius house

President John F. Kennedy secretly endorsed the release of hardened criminals to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro to curb the Communist threat, a new book has claimed. At the height of tensions between America and neighbouring Communist Cuba in the early 1960s, JFK was implicit in the freeing of rapists, drug dealers, and Mafia hitmen through CIA in a bid to recruit ´untraceable´ spies willing to risk their lives on dangerous missions rather than go back to jail, a new book sensationally claims. Desperate to remove Castro from power, the president resorted to using dangerous criminals as operatives -

Julius Caesar is reputed to have said, "The die is cast" as he crossed the Rubicon and headed south with his army to administer the coup de grace to what little was left of individual liberty under the old Roman Republic. President Obama has been doing some casting of his own of late, as evidenced during the State of the Union address in his threat to Congress regarding global warming. First came the warning: Congress must pass a cap-and-trade bill to combat global warming because, Obama said, "the 12 hottest years on record have all come in the last 15.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have fiercely defended the nomination of Chuck Hagel, despite advisers and Hill Democrats who questioned the move and predicted a firestorm, according to Democratic sources. That opinion was validated, at least for the moment, by events Thursday as Senate Republicans narrowly blocked cloture on Hagel’s nomination. Obama immediately slammed the filibuster — which could be broken after a 10-day congressional recess. But an irked Obama is dead set on installing his pick at the Pentagon — even though the bitter battle over his confirmation is likely to leave lasting scars on his nominee

This evening, after I write this piece, I will be voting in the Oscars, for the first time online. (I have been an Academy member since 1985 and we have always voted during that period on written forms mailed directly to Price Waterhouse.) The Academy discourages us from revealing our votes – so I won’t. (At least not here. Watch the next Poliwood and you might get some idea.) But I will tell you one film I will not be voting for — Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal’s version of the hunt for Bin Laden.

Commerce: In his State of the Union address, President Obama announced talks with Europe for the most ambitious trade partnership ever attempted. So how come it doesn´t include the words "free trade"? bfgs´Tonight, I am announcing that we will launch talks on a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union — because trade that is free and fair across the Atlantic supports millions of good-paying American jobs," President Obama said in his State of the Union address. It´s hard to think of any greater tonic for two stricken economies than free trade with one other.

The late Ted Kennedy became known as “the Hero of Chappaquiddick” for leaving a young lady to die after accidentally driving his car off a bridge on the night of July 18, 1969. Kennedy, who swam free, said nothing to police until 10 a.m. the following day. In the subsequent inquest, John Farrar, a professional diver and the captain of the Edgartown Fire Rescue unit on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts, discovered the body of Mary Jo Kopechne in the well of the backseat of the overturned and submerged car. So says The Hill, with good reason — Congress has taken a break with just two weeks to go before the deadline. The House and Senate won’t return until February 25th, which only gives them three days to cut a deal to avoid it. That won’t be nearly enough time, and is out of the question if John Boehner sticks to his pledge of normal-order budgeting. The question now will be how long it lasts rather than whether it hits: The question in Washington is no longer whether the automatic spending cuts known as the sequester will be implemented:

Democratic National Committee executive director Patrick Gaspard, formerly the Obama White House political director, appears to be the administration’s pick to be the next ambassador to South Africa. Gaspard, a major player in New York City politics — he worked on former Mayor David Dinkins’ campaign, for example, — was a top operative of the Service Employees International Union and a political organizer. He also was actively involved in organizing efforts in the 1980s and ’90s to topple South Africa’s apartheid regime. While in the White House, Gaspard, a Haitian American, was also a key player in U.S. relief

Dr. Ben Carson, a renowned pediatric neurosurgeon who helped lead the first surgery separating twins joined at the head, has received a fair amount of attention in his 61 years. But none of it before begins to compare to the response he has gotten since he spoke at the February 7 National Prayer Breakfast with President Obama sitting five feet away. While most of his remarks were motivational or spiritual, he made some pointed political comments about the need for freer markets in health care and a less complicated tax code

After President Barack Obama gave his 2013 State of the Union address, Florida Senator Marco Rubio delivered the Republican response. Obama offered government activism. Rubio extolled free enterprise. This is a worthy "national conversation." The liberal Obama media instead obsessed over Rubio reaching for a cup of water during his speech. Liberals called it a gaffe. CNN even speculated this could end his political career. As expected, Obamatrons piled on. A speech contrasting the Reagan world vision with European social democracy governance favored by Obama was lost in the fog of MSNBC, CNN, and liberal comedians.
