Kim Kardashian and Kanye West had a misunderstanding with Transportation Security Administration officials at JFK International Airport in New York on Tuesday, but apparently the whole thing wasn´t their fault. Chalk that one up to being rich and famous and likely to get favors. The reality TV starlet and her rapper boyfriend/baby daddy were on their way back from Rio de Janeiro, where they were attending Rio Carnival. They were trying to catch a connection from New York to Los Angeles when things went sideways: An airline greeter allowed them to skip a security
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) is the first Republican supporter of a bill that would allow U.S. citizens to bring their foreign same-sex partners to the country for legal residency. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Collins (R-Maine) will introduce the bill, which Leahy has introduced every year since 2003 and insisted should be part of any immigration reform deal. “More than two dozen countries recognize same-sex couples for immigration purposes,” Collins said. “This important civil rights legislation would help prevent committed, loving families from being forced to choose between leaving their family or leaving their country.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) filed for cloture on the nomination of Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense late Wednesday afternoon as Republican senators continued to call for additional disclosure of material from Hagel. Among the requested materials: the full text and details of several speeches Hagel failed to report to the Senate Armed Services Committee that have since been uncovered. Fox News Channel on Tuesday reported on two speeches Hagel failed to disclose as requested, including one given in 2008 to the annual conference of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC).
Fasten your seat belts, the ride for airline passengers is going to get if not bumpier, more expensive. Completing this stage of the consolidation of the legacy airline sector, American Airlines, currently in bankruptcy, will merge with US Airways. In a short period of time, United has merged with Continental, Delta with Northwest, and now we have three giants, each aligned with one of the three global "alliances" that seek to consolidate and tame the world´s air transportation markets. (A fourth big player in the domestic airline industry, Southwest Airlines, remains unaffiliated with a global alliance
Republican Senators have the necessary 41 votes to block the confirmation of Chuck Hagel from coming to a vote this week, and will be able to stage a filibuster, according to an interview given by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) to Breitbart News editor Larry O´Connor on Washington, DC-area WMAL radio this morning. "The cloture vote is gonna be very close. It´s gonna be today or tomorrow. We may very well defeat this first cloture vote," Vitter said. ABC News´ Jonathan Karl confirmed that Democrats do not yet have the votes to
President Barack Obama’s top 2012 campaign strategist is attacking a fiery op-ed that was written by National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and published in The Daily Caller. “Hard to believe this is real,” David Plouffe said in an early-evening tweet on Wednesday. “Every GOPer should read and decide if this delusional person will call the shots.” In the op-ed, LaPierre used alarming images to rally gun-rights supporters against what he described as “the hellish world that the gun prohibitionists see as their utopia.” “Looters ran wild in south Brooklyn. There was no food, water or electricity.
Here are five reasons why Dr. Ben Carson, the famed Baltimore pediatric neurosurgeon and American patriot, should run for president. 1. He has a real job. Dr. Carson is no street volunteer or professor cloistered in an ivory tower. He has dedicated his life to medicine and has saved the lives of countless children plagued by unimaginable maladies. And as a practicing doctor, he understands the marketplace and how unchecked government interference can bring about catastrophic, if unintended, consequences. 2. He lives the American dream. Growing up in dire poverty in Detroit as the son of a
Outgoing Social Security Commissioner Michael J. Astrue has some parting shots for Congress, the White House and advocates for seniors. They have all "really walked away from Social Security," he says, leaving the program "fraying because of inattention to its problems." Instead of making the hard choices to fix Social Security´s financial problems, policymakers "use it as a tool of political rhetoric," Astrue said. Astrue, 56, has headed the federal government´s largest program since 2006 -- he was nominated by former President George W. Bush. By law, Social Security commissioners serve six-year terms,
If you´re looking to get a "bang" out of your Facebook friends on Valentine´s Day, there is an app for that. Bang With Friends is a controversial app that, as the name implies, is supposed to be no-nonsense way to learn which of your friends is interested in having sex. The app´s logo and introductory screen shot leave no doubt about its intent. Since launching on Jan. 23, the app has "already hooked up over 100,000 couples," according to an e-mail from the three California college students who created the app.
President Barack Obama is expected to propose during his Thursday visit to metro Atlanta that the federal government expand the Head Start preschool program, which is designed to prepare children from low-income families for school. Obama also plans to back a new partnership with states to provide preschool for every 4-year-old from low- and middle-income families, according to details from the White House that emerged hours before his scheduled visit. The plan would be funded through with federal matching dollars for public preschool slots for families who earn at or below 200 percent of the poverty level.
The New York Times has a must-read up on how the GOP is losing the tech war — and losing the youth vote. But tucked away in the piece, I found this:[W]e can’t be afraid to call out Rush Limbaugh,” said Goodwin’s fiancée, S. E. Cupp, a New York Daily News columnist and a co-host of”The Cycle”on MSNBC. “If we can get three Republicans on three different networks saying, ‘What Rush Limbaugh said is crazy and stupid and dangerous,’ maybe that’ll give other Republicans cover” to denounce the talk-show host as well.
There is something entirely appropriate about holding the State of the Union address on the same day as Mardi Gras. One is a display of wretched excess, when giddy and rowdy participants give in to reckless and irresponsible behavior. The other is a street festival in New Orleans. There is, thankfully, less nudity in the House chamber for the president’s annual address, and (slightly) less inebriation. But what occurs beneath the Capitol Dome is as debauched as anything on Bourbon Street. The State of the Union ritual is by now familiar to most Americans.
One of the big moments of the State of the Union address was President Obama’s call for “high-quality preschool” for 4-year-olds. Nobody was happier at the idea than Walter Mondale, the former vice president. “This is going to be wonderful,” he said in a phone conversation. His delight was sort of inspiring. If I had been down the road Mondale has traveled, my mood would have been a little darker. In 1971, when he was a senator, Mondale led the Congressional drive to make quality preschool education available to every family in the United States that wanted it.
“Zero Dark Thirsty,” “Swing and a Miss,” “Parch Madness,” “Tough Swallow,” “Just Add Water,” and “Water Under the Bridge” were a handful of the phrases used on-air by MSNBC on Wednesday to mock Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio for awkwardly pausing to take a sip of water while delivering the official Republican response to the State of the Union address. Throughout the broadcast day, between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. EST, MSNBC showed a replay of Rubio’s swig approximately 155 times — 101 of which came during “The Rachel Maddow Show ,” which played the moment on loop
After four years of Barack Obama´s diplomatic ´leadership´ and billions of dollars in attempted friendship aid, a new public opinion poll reveals that 92% of Pakistanis now disapprove of the United States. [Snip] Only four Pakistanis out of 100 approve of the United States, President Obama and his policies. They, however, seem to keep kind of quiet about their views in that rowdy land. That´s the lowest favorable rating Pakistan´s citizens have ever given their ostensible North American ally.
“First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes the baby in the baby carriage,” goes the rhyme. Unfortunately, in large swaths of American society, this rhyme is playing in reverse, with dire consequences for lower-income Americans. Given five decades of deteriorating marriage trends, it appears Americans concur with H.L. Mencken, who joked, “Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who´d want to live in an institution?” Since 1960, the percentage of married Americans plunged from 72 percent to 51 percent last year, a record low. Meanwhile, babies born to unwed mothers skyrocketed from 4 percent in 1960 to 41 percent in
The family of a Plymouth-area girl who nearly died and was left legally blind after taking one of the country’s most common household medicines, Children’s Motrin, was awarded $63 million Wednesday by a Massachusetts jury that found health care giant Johnson & Johnson failed to warn patients adequately about the painkiller’s potential side effects. (Snip) But as she continued to take the drug, her condition only worsened, to the point where her family didn’t know whether she would survive. Within days, doctors determined she suffered from Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis,

Squalid, smelly and steamy, the crippled cruise ship Carnival Triumph limped toward port on Thursday, its passengers and crew looking forward to an end to their hellish vacation. The laborious slog through the Gulf of Mexico tested not only the senses of the thousands on board, but their patience as well. Towed by three tugboats, the ship is on track to arrive at terminal in Mobile, Alabama, around 4 p.m. ET Thursday. It´s been a nightmare five days for the 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members on board the 900-foot, 14-story Triumph where a fire broke out
Warren Buffett´s Berkshire Hathaway Inc and 3G Capital will buy H.J. Heinz Co for $72.50 a share, or $23.2 billion in cash, Heinz said on Thursday. Including debt assumption, Heinz valued the deal at $28 billion, which it called the largest in food industry history.Heinz said the deal would be financed with cash from Berkshire and 3G, debt rollover and debt financing from J.P. CNBC reported that each side would put up $4.5 billion
Instead of a romantic wedding at sea, one Texan couple´s nuptials has descended into hell because they are currently stranded on the Carnival Triumph cruise ship in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.Rob Mowlam, 37 and Stephanie Stevenson, 27 of Nederland, Texas were married by the captain of the now stricken vessel on Saturday night, but the next day an engine fire disabled the 900-foot vessel leaving it a bobbing cork in the ocean. Instead of a champagne breakfast, the newly married couple are now stranded along with 4,200 other passengers surrounded by cabin carpets soaked in urine,
A peer-reviewed survey of 1077 geoscientists and engineers finds that "only 36 percent of geoscientists and engineers believe that humans are creating a global warming crisis," according to James Taylor, writing at Forbes.com. As he points out, if there is a scientific consensus at all, it would have to be skepticism toward anthropogenic global warming. Yet President Obama in his State of the Union speech Tuesday cited the now-discredited notion of such a consensus as the foundation of his green agenda. It is bunk. Headline split by staff
South African paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder and is in custody after reportedly shooting his girlfriend dead in the middle of the night after mistaking her for a burglar. It happened at 4am this morning and the woman may have been killed after a Valentine´s Day surprise went tragically wrong at his mansion in Pretoria. The dead woman is Reeva Steenkamp, 30, a former FHM model who has been dating the 26-year-old for two months. She was shot in the head, the chest and the arm, police in the country have said,
As an immigrant to the United States, and thus a sideline spectator of the panorama that is American society, (snip) I have been fascinated by the characteristics of the American left as compared to their counterparts in the rest of the world. While on the surface there may appear to be similarities, at least on a so-called philosophical basis, there are, however, virtually none when it comes to the motivation and personality quirks of the American left.
The best way to get rid of cockroaches is to tell them you want a long-term relationship.[Snip] For most men love is just a fourletter word. Ask him if he loves you and the most articulate man on the planet will suddenly take on the speech patterns of an android from Robots From Planet Moron. Ask a man if he loves you and he´ll become so enigmatic he´ll be harder to read than advanced trigonometry. But Valentine´s Day really puts a potential spouse on the spot. It´s make or break time. Better to find out he´s a commitment-phobe now than
