A Michigan-based company slated to produce lithium-ion polymer batteries for electric vehicles has instead kept production overseas, has failed to meet job targets outlined in a $150 million grant from the federal government, and has been reimbursed by the government for $842,000 in wasted work time, according to a U.S. Department of Energy Special Report released Wednesday. The DOE says Holland, Mich.-based LG Chem Michigan misused part of a $150 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds and has decided not to shift production from its plant in South Korea to

The carrier keeps the American Airlines name but will be run by US Airways CEO Doug Parker. American´s CEO, Tom Horton, will become chairman of the new company, these people said. My reaction to last night’s State of the Union address begins from compassion for my fellow wonks, and ends with a sense that the Democrats’ political fortunes in the coming years may not be so rosy as many on the Left would like to think. By the end of the speech, I was feeling sorry for the White House policy staff. It’s perfectly clear looking over the text that they have just been through a months-long budget policy process that must have ended in total failure. Anyone who has been through this annual exercise at the White House would recognize the tell-tale signs. The phrase “I will direct my cabinet

Newark — The haunting video, shot on a hot summer night, starts with a young man being ordered to strip naked as he is berated by a group around him. One person squirts his body with water. Another demands money. When he does not hand any over, the beating starts. As the naked man is lashed repeatedly, those surrounding him laugh above the crack of a belt hitting his skin. City officials announced Wednesday that they had arrested three people they say participated in the August attack and filmed the 2 1/2-minute video. The men were identified as 22-year-old Ahmad Holt, 31-year-old

A Jersey City woman who once lived with the man charged with killing and decapitating two Jersey City men said yesterday that the man she knew could never have committed such a crime. “They are describing him as a monster, but that’s not how I’ve known him,” said Emma Abdelrehim, who described herself as a close family friend of Yusuf Ibrahim, 27, and not a girlfriend. “He was an awesome person, awesome with kids, and he would never harm anyone, not even an animal,” Abdelrehim said. “What I saw on TV and what I read I could not believe. That is not his character, and I don’t think he has

Imagine the firestorm of outrage that would be ignited in the liberal media were a conservative paper like the Wall Street Journal to hire a Republican pundit who insulted First Lady Michelle Obama during last year´s campaign, even if said pundit subsequently apologized. Now compare that to the silence that most certainly will greet the Washington Post hiring Hilary Rosen as an opinion contributor. Paul Bedard of the Washington Examiner notes that Rosen -- who infamously snarled that Ann Romney "didn´t work a day in her life" -- will co-author" the paper´s

In the wake of an ABC News story detailing claims by victims of the Fort Hood shooting that they have been neglected by the military and ´betrayed´ by President Obama, the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee has sent a letter to his fellow members of Congress demanding that the Obama administration classify the attack as a terrorist act and provide full benefits to the victims and their families. "It is time for the administration to recognize the Fort Hood shooting for what it is—an act of terrorism,"

Deputies did not intentionally burn down the Southern California mountain cabin where fugitive Christopher Dorner apparently made his deadly last stand Tuesday, the San Bernardino County sheriff said Wednesday. "We did not intentionally burn down that cabin to get Mr. Dorner out," Sheriff John McMahon said at an afternoon news conference. He said deputies initially fired conventional "cold" tear gas into the cabin in Seven Oaks, near Big Bear Lake, then switched to "pyrotechnic-type" rounds" known as "burners." Authorities have strong evidence that the man deputies tracked to the

WASHINGTON- U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said calls for boosted border security should not block the path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Napolitano testified Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington, saying the Obama Administration has deported an unprecedented number of illegal immigrants, reduced the number of illegal border crossings and increased the number of border patrol agents to 21,000 from 2,100 in the 1980s, the Los Angeles Times reported. WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday gave Congress an ultimatum on climate change: craft a plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the dangers of a warming world, or the White House will go it alone. "If Congress won´t act soon to protect future generations, I will," Obama said in his State of the Union address. "I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition

Marco Rubio’s political action committee is trying to capitalize on all the attention about his “sip slip” on Tuesday night by selling official Rubio water bottles to supporters. “Send the liberal detractors a message that not only does Marco Rubio inspire you. … He hydrates you too,” Terry Sullivan of the Reclaim America PAC said in a Wednesday evening fundraising solicitation to supporters. Much has been made about the Florida senator’s Republican response to the State of the Union on Tuesday night. At one point during his remarks, the thirsty lawmaker

As President Obama took to the road Wednesday promoting his plan for more federal aid for manufacturers, an industry official said the president could help businesses far more by agreeing on a budget deal with Congress. Jay Timmons, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, told business leaders in Detroit that the administration’s inability to compromise with Republican lawmakers on looming budget cuts is causing manufacturers to pull back from hiring and expansion plans. The latest fiscal deadline in Washington is March 1, when $85 billion of spending cuts are due to

The White House said Wednesday night it opposes a bill by House Republicans to extend a pay freeze for federal civilian employees through the end of this year. President Obama, who proposed on Tuesday an increase in the federal minimum wage to $9 per hour, signed an executive order in December that would lift the pay freeze beginning on March 27 unless Congress acts before then. The president proposed the “unprecedented” civilian pay freeze in 2010 to “put the nation on a sustainable fiscal path,” the White House Office of Management and Budget said. OMB said

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours?” the deep and dramatic-sounding voice intoned. “Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school?” When the National Rifle Association aired its 35-second TV spot last month, suggesting that President Obama has a double standard on school security and seemingly using his daughters as props, the White House quickly labeled it “repugnant and cowardly.” But the commercial was another in a long line of bare-knuckled NRA advertisements, many of them controversial

Before Ronald Reagan traveled the 16 blocks to the White House after his first inaugural address, the White House curator had, at the new president’s instruction, hung in the Cabinet room a portrait of Calvin Coolidge. The Great Communicator knew that “Silent Cal” could use words powerfully — 15 of them made him a national figure — because he was economical in their use, as in all things. Were Barack Obama, America’s most loquacious president (699 first-term teleprompter speeches), capable of learning from someone with whom he disagrees, he would profit from Amity Shlaes’s new biography

Every day I read or hear pundits spending energy telling us the Tea Party is dead. Daily. Repeatedly. If we were dead, we´d have about as much media time as, oh, Michael Dukakis. However, our principles of limited government and fiscal responsibility are starting to actually resonate. All it took was a simple expiring 2 percent payroll tax hike to destroy four years of "government for free" fiction. Anyone else notice that "fiscal cliff" tax hikes have already been consumed by the spending for Superstorm (aka a "weak Category 1 for Floridians") Sandy?

Marco Rubio delivered the GOP response to President Obama’s State of the Union last night. Did he talk about the contracting economy, rising unemployment, immigration reform, spiraling debt, and what we can do about it? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes. But thanks to a unique moment of having to take a (gasp) sip of water while publicly speaking for a long stretch of time, the only thing talking heads are talking about today is Rubio “watering down the Republican message.” Get it? Should the Rubio water story been broached? Of course.
