Obama’s ´bipartisan´ State of the Union
paints Republicans as anti-science,
job-hating Neanderthals

There was a slightly surreal context to this year’s State of the Union.[Snip] The State of the Union repeated a lot of the same themes of the past few years. That’s because a lot of Obama’s promises remain unfulfilled and are still reliant on slipping them through a hostile Congress. Take his signature pledge to raise the minimum wage to $9, which he insisted will stimulate the economy and create jobs. Back in 2008, Obama said he’s raise the minimum wage to $9.50 by 2011. Likewise, we got a retread on cutting the deficit, slashing unemployment

There are times, such as last night´s State of the Union address, when I think President Barack Obama has taken leave of reality. How he can claim, when half the Arab world is being overrun by Islamist militants, that al-Qaeda is now a shadow of its former self is beyond comprehension. Is he forgetting that it is only five months since Chris Stevens, the US ambassador to Libya, died following an attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi by al-Qaeda militants? Is he unaware of al-Qaeda´s takeover of large swathes of North Africa? Hasn´t anyone told him that al-Qaeda is

A politically emboldened President Obama railed against Congress on Tuesday for its lack of compromise on budget cuts as he called for greater investments in education and infrastructure that he promised would be ´fully paid for.´ ´Nothing I’m proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime,´ Obama said during his State of the Union address. ´It’s not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad-based growth.´ In a broad-ranging speech that lasted just over an hour, Obama grew emotional at times as he rallied for

There weren´t many memorable lines in President Obama´s State of the Union speech. Indeed, only one leapt out at me: "As long as I’m commander in chief, we will do whatever we must to protect those who serve their country abroad." Was this statement in the future tense, an implicit acknowledgment that in the recent past the commander in chief had in fact failed to "do whatever we must to protect those who serve their country abroad?" Was this promise of presidential action a kind of silent apology for his inaction on September 11, 2012?

Shortly before 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, the White House emailed reporters that President Obama had signed a highly anticipated Executive Order aimed at protecting cyber security. The order — setting up new programs aimed at stopping online espionage and terrorism — was already the law of the land, signed by the president. But it was also secret. The document was "embargoed until delivery of the President´s in the State of the Union address" — despite the fact it had already been signed. Such embargoes — imposed unilaterally, rather than agreed-upon — are not binding on news organizations

Charred human remains have been found in the burned-out cabin where fugitive former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner was believed to be, according to a sheriff´s spokeswoman. Jodi Miller from San Bernardino County sheriff´s office said the remains were found late Tuesday after a shootout that killed one sheriff´s deputy and injured another. It brings the number of murders Dorner is said to have committed to four. Authorities believe Dorner barricaded himself inside the cabin and a fire later ensued. Investigators will attempt to determine if the remains are Dorner´s through forensic tests, but it could take up to

Although the 150ft (45m) rock will zoom harmlessly by our planet on its record near approach this week, it is just one of up to a million "near-Earth objects" which astronomers believe could one day pose a serious threat. A program set up by NASA to monitor so-called "NEOs" a decade and a half ago has so far tracked fewer than 10,000, meaning the vast majority are still hidden. Most of the larger specimens, which could have the potential to wipe out entire continents, have been found but even small asteroids like 2012 DA14 could be powerful enough to destroy

Karl Rove was not happy. The conservative base of the Republican Party is not happy. The Ford/Bush-Reagan battle of ideology decades past suddenly renews. What’s going on with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell? And yes, to wax Carvillian, it is the ideology, stupid. In fact, it is an ideological war. First, Mr. Rove and a leaked email. The date: September 14, 2010. The place: Sean Hannity’s television show. The occasion: The Delaware U.S. Senate primary, won that night by conservative activist Christine O’Donnell. Won by a more than respectable 6 points, 53%-47%. The news reached Karl Rove while appearing on Sean Hannity’s Fox News TV show, as seen here.

So, former VP Dick Cheney says "The performance now of Barack Obama as he staffs up the national security team for the second term is dismal... Frankly, what he has appointed are second-rate people." Well, to be charitable to Barack´s second-raters, at least our third-rate president has learned one leadership axiom -- surround yourself with people smarter and more capable than you are. Yet what a tragedy to waste even second-raters on a national security policy that is but a portfolio of indifference and cynicism. "What Difference Does It Make?"

Unless President Obama plans on cramming through his entire second-term agenda with executive orders, one would think he’d be interested in wooing moderate Republicans such as Senator Susan Collins of Maine. Well, Collins told reporters she thought the president’s State of the Union address was a “disappointment,” primarily because he failed to outline a plan to deal with the country’s mounting debt, and “avoided many of the tough choices that are going to have to be made.” “The president certainly outlined a very ambitious agenda, but I’m very unclear

Congressman Kerry Bentivolio, R-Milford, released the following statement Tuesday following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address: “President Obama keeps trying to convince us that giving up our freedoms and letting the government make our decisions on how to run our lives is a sign of progress. He wants the government to tell us how to run our businesses. He wants the government to get between us and our doctors. He wants the government to take more of our nation’s hard earned money instead of letting us spend it for ourselves. All of these intrusions make us less prosperous, less healthy,

It is difficult to say with certainly which of the many whoppers President Obama told tonight was took the most crust to utter, but my money is going on this assertion, made a few minutes into the speech: “Already, the Affordable Care Act is helping to slow the growth of health care costs.” I know “Orwellian” has now become rather hackneyed, but there is simply no other adjective that better describes this statement. It is not merely a lie. It is the precise opposite of the truth. It is just as absurd as “war is peace” or “freedom is slavery.”

The International Olympic Committee has dropped wrestling from the 2020 Summer Games, a surprising decision that has bewildered athletes and fans of the longtime Olympic sport. The IOC said Tuesday that its executive board recommended excluding wrestling from its list of core sports. Wrestling still has a chance to return to the Games in 2020 via a complicated process: The IOC later this year will choose one of eight shortlisted sports—wrestling, baseball/softball, climbing, karate, roller sports, squash, wakeboarding and a Chinese martial art called wushu—to add to the 2020 program.

More than 750 people, many representing eight labor groups, clogged the Tuesday night Anchorage Assembly meeting in a sign of the fight to come over Mayor Dan Sullivan´s proposal to weaken city unions. Assembly members voted 7-4 to allow the proposal to proceed to a public hearing on Feb. 26. Assembly members Dick Traini, Paul Honeman, Elvi Gray-Jackson and Patrick Flynn voted to kill the plan outright. Sullivan says the sweeping changes are long overdue and necessary to streamline labor negotiations and deliver city services cheaper and more efficiently.

President Barack Obama delivered an “effective” State of the Union address that took an emotional turn at the end with the emphasis on gun violence, members of the media said after his speech on Tuesday. CBS’s Bob Schieffer called the speech much “better” than Obama’s inaugural address, which he said had come across as a “partisan lecture.” “I mean, the president’s inaugural address had sort of a partisan lecture tone about it,” Schieffer said after Obama wrapped. “This was a political speech, but it was well-written, it had a beginning, a middle and an end.”

Everything in this column will be established by logical proof, as in geometry. There will be no name calling, or mere assertion. You probably heard again last night that President Obama still thinks “the rich,” a crass term implying low class social envy, do not pay their “fair share.” He has been barnstorming America saying precisely that for his more than four years in office now. But the indisputable facts from official government sources say otherwise. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data, compiled from income tax returns, as reported by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO)

The family of a U.S. Customs Enforcement agent killed in a 2011 ambush on a Mexican highway and another agent who survived filed a lawsuit Tuesday seeking to hold the government and nearly two-dozen other defendants accountable in the attack. The federal lawsuit arises from the Feb. 15, 2011, attack on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents Jaime Zapata and Victor Avila. They were attacked in their armored sport-utility vehicle near San Luis Potosi, Mexico, shortly after picking up some equipment from another agent. Zapata died and Avila was seriously wounded.

Liberals continue their hysteria over remarks made by Dr. Ben Carson at the National Prayer Breakfast last week. Carson, a prominent pediatric surgeon from Johns Hopkins University, dared to weigh in on healthcare — something he knows something about, and certainly knows better than Barack Obama. In the liberal mind, Carson committed a grave transgression; he had dared to disagree with Obama, and in Obama’s presence. In a discussion of Carson’s moral effrontery, Candy Crowley, host of CNN’s State of the Union, asked her panelists whether they were offended by Carson’s comments.

A State of the Union address is often difficult to fact-check, no matter who is president. The speech is a product of many hands and is carefully vetted, so major errors of fact are relatively rare. But State of the Union addresses often are very political speeches, an argument for the president’s policies, so context is sometimes missing. Here is a guide through some of President Obama’s more fact-challenged claims, in the order in which he made them. As is our practice with live events, we do not award Pinocchio rankings, which are reserved for complete columns.

Sadly we know the Obama boilerplate speech by heart, and so the inaugural address was by now unfortunately straw-man psychodrama. Five years ago, the well-delivered script caused fainting, now it should earn mostly yawns: Fault the well off; invest more borrowed money in more federal programs that have no demonstrable record of success; blame the bad news on others; ignore the $1 trillion-plus annual borrowing; threaten to use more executive orders; demonize the opposition; take bad news abroad and declare it good, and fluff everything up with the hope-and-change cadences that address the trivial and avoid the fundamental.

A recent report of some importance seems to have escaped the eagle-eyes of the MSM, so it is worth bringing to light here. It turns out that even though unions reached the zenith of power with the re-election of their tool Obama last year, they hit a nadir of support. In 2012, union membership dropped an incredible 400,000 nationwide, which is a half-percent drop in just one year. Union membership is now down to 11.3% of American workers, the majority now being government workers. Thirty-five point nine percent of public-sector workers are union members --

There´s a story told about a Paris chief of police who was called to a department store to stop a burglary in progress. Upon his arrival, he reconnoitered the situation and ordered his men to surround the entrances of the building next door. When questioned about his actions, he replied that he didn´t have enough men to cover the department store´s many entrances but he did have enough for the building next door. Let´s see whether there are similarities between his strategy and today´s gun control strategy. Last year, Chicago had 512 homicides;

Saying “the state of the economy is tenuous,” U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., on Tuesday night issued a tea party critique of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address and his policies that called for smaller government, deep federal spending cuts and congressional term limits. “The path we are on is not sustainable, but few in Congress or in this administration seem to recognize that their actions are endangering the prosperity of this great nation,” Paul warned in remarks delivered minutes after the president spoke and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio offered the official Republican response.

President Barack Obama filled his State of the Union with carefully-phrased rhetoric designed to sound reasonable, attract widespread support and not give fodder for his enemies to attack. But some appeals to key elements of his base Tuesday – from environmentalists and Latinos to gays — seem likely to cause at least some heartburn to red-state Democrats. Six Senate Democrats face reelection next year in states carried by Mitt Romney last November: Alaska’s Mark Begich, Arkansas’ Mark Pryor, Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu, Montana’s Max Baucus, North Carolina’s Kay Hagan and South Dakota’s Tim Johnson.

In English and Spanish, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio on Tuesday night delivered a scathing rebuke of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech, signaling a Republican battle for middle-class voters that could help re-energize his party and also propel a potential 2016 White House run. The Florida senator delivered his party’s official rebuttal to Obama’s speech, but he wasn’t the only Republican responding Tuesday night. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, another potential Republican presidential contender, responded to Obama’s talk on behalf of the tea party.
