Ignatius Begs Obama: Spare Rubio

RUSH: A most amazing thing, to me, anyway. This may not be that big a deal to you, but to me it is. I found this on Newsbusters. I didn´t actually see this. Chris Matthews has a syndicated show that runs on Sundays throughout the country. This is not his nightly MSNBC tingle-up-the-leg show. And on his show yesterday was Washington Post columnist David Ignatius who literally begged Obama, implored Obama not to destroy Marco Rubio in the upcoming immigration debate. I think this is a tantamount admission to what´s going on.

IN EIGHT years as pope, Benedict XVI’s boldest act may have been his last one. (Snip) Pope Benedict’s response to the greatest challenge he faced — the explosion of sexual-abuse scandals in Catholic dioceses around the world — was inadequate. During his visit to the United States in 2008, he met with victims of predatory priests; he later apologized for the crimes and oversaw modest Vatican measures to extend the statute of limitation for cases and prevent further abuse. But the pope never acted against bishops who covered up crimes, and he never admitted or apologized for his own failures

Gabby Giffords is taking her campaign for gun control to the airwaves. Giffords, the former Arizona congresswoman who was shot in the head in 2011, launches a new TV ad this week through her recently-formed "super PAC." The 30-second spot, in which Giffords herself implores America to "get this done," is targeting congressional leaders with ad buys that will reach constituents of House Speaker John Boehner, House Minority Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Over pictures of grieving families after recent massacres in Newtown, Aurora and Tucson, Giffords, who is still

There´s an infobabe at CNN by the name of Deb Feyerick. And over the weekend, I guess Saturday afternoon, she was reporting on CNN about an approaching asteroid that will pass by the earth on February 15th, and it´s gonna be relatively close in astronomical terms. It doesn´t pose any kind of a threat yet.

If you hear that Dorner is anywhere near where you live, based on what I´ve heard from the left in recent weeks, the safest thing you can do is turn in your guns. That´s what will make you safe. I´ve heard every Democrat, I´ve heard the media say this, that the way we´re gonna make this country safe is for everybody to get rid of their guns. So if this Dorner guy, who´s already killed three cops, shows up in your neighborhood, somehow

Biden on Philly visit decries

Accumulated gun violence in America produces "a Sandy Hook-plus" of deaths every day, Vice President Biden said Monday following a meeting with regional law enforcement and elected officials in Philadelphia. He was referring to the 26 children and teachers killed in the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Monday´s breaking news about a fatal shooting at a courthouse in Wilmington in Biden´s home state of Delaware only underscored "the urgency" of the need for "common sense" restrictions on gun sales, he said. What goes around comes around, as the New York Times reported yesterday: Four years into [President Obama´s] tenure, the onetime critic of President George W. Bush finds himself cast as a present-day Mr. Bush, justifying the muscular application of force in the defense of the nation while detractors complain that he has sacrificed the country´s core values in the name of security. It seems that last week, as Times media columnist David Carr puts it, "the debate over drone strikes broke out into plain view during the confirmation hearings for John O. Brennan" for CIA director.

The Senate Armed Services Committee will vote Tuesday on Chuck Hagel’s nomination for secretary of defense, committee chairman Carl Levin (D., Mich.) announced today. Reports suggest Levin has grown tired of requests for details about the various groups Hagel spoken for and received compensation from, as well as GOP threats to filibuster the nomination until more information is disclosed about the September 11 attacks in Benghazi and the administration’s response. One Republican aide said Levin’s decision to rush through a committee vote was an effort to “snuff the momentum” building in opposition to the Hagel’s nomination.

Less than one month into his second term, President Barack Obama looks to complete the outlines of an ambitious agenda in his State of the Union address Tuesday night. In his inaugural speech, the president telegraphed several initiatives he wants Congress to pursue and pass this year: gun control legislation, a bill to create a legalization process for many of the nation’s illegal immigrants, subsidies for renewable energy technologies and legislation to respond to climate change. Obama will likely return to those topics Tuesday night, but the White House has signaled that this speech will focus

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Monday that he opposes an assault weapons ban. Speaking on MSNBC Manchin, who has an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association and in December called for federal action to reduce gun violence, said he thinks there´s a better way to reduce mass shootings without introducing new restrictions for gun owners. "I do not support an assault weapon ban because the definition of assault weapon is still hard to come by," Manchin said. "So I am not going to comment on people´s legislation. I do not support that approach right now."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday that he is willing to consider supporting new tax revenue as part of a plan to avert $85 billion in looming budget cuts, as the White House pushed back against Republican lawmakers who say President Obama is solely responsible for the spending reductions. McCain made the comments as he once again warned about the adverse effects of the spending reductions, known as sequestration, that will require federal agencies to slash $85 billion in spending by Sept. 30 — including $43 billion at the Pentagon.

This week’s TIME magazine cover features 2016 GOP frontrunner Marco Rubio with an inescapable headline: “THE REPUBLICAN SAVIOR”. Given Mitt Romney’s stinging defeat in November and the almost-comical party-infighting since, Republicans could use that kind hero right now. While Mr. Rubio’s story is inspiring (son of Cuban immigrants graduates law school cum laude, overwhelmingly elected to the U.S. Senate at only age 38), and while he’s currently the best candidate to take on Hillary Clinton in 2016 (assuming she runs, which she will), there may be a very distinguished someone (who has never held public office) ready

Durbin: Obama’s

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said that President Obama originally designed the budget sequester as a threat to get Republicans to agree to raise taxes, never intending it to actually be policy. “[S]equestration was designed as a budget threat, not as a budget strategy, Durbin said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday. “When the president proposed the sequester, it was as an incentive to those of us in Congress to work together on a bipartisan basis to solve these problems. It was supposed to be so awful that the super committee would finally reach a bipartisan agreement.”

If the first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem, Democratic leaders are not quite in agreement on the question of federal spending. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday that President Obama does believe Washington has a spending problem, contradicting a claim by House Minority Leader Nancy E. Pelosi. Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, said Sunday it is "almost a false argument to say we have a spending problem." She instead called the fiscal crisis "a government deficit problem."

In recent days, the White House has pressed the message that, if policymakers can agree on a strategy for replacing across-the-board spending cuts set to hit next month, the president will pretty much have achieved his debt-reduction goals. “Over the last few years, Democrats and Republicans have come together and cut our deficit [over the next decade]

The more than 3,000 passengers on the stricken cruise ship stuck off coast of Mexico have turned into ´savages´ and are fighting over food, relatives have claimed. Those on board have no power and have been forced to sleep on deck in tents as there is no air conditioning in the sweltering cabins. The toilets are also not working meaning that passengers have had to make do with bags or buckets. Brent Nutt, whose wife Bethany is on board, claimed that brawling had started because some passengers have got so hungry and food is so scarce.
