On Monday, a panel on Fox News Channel debated the appropriateness of a speech delivered at last week’s National Prayer Breakfast by Dr. Benjamin Carson in which he advocated conservative reforms at a venue attended by President Barack Obama. Conservative guest Cal Thomas broke with many on the right when he said that it was not appropriate for Carson to advance conservative policy arguments at what is supposed to be an apolitical event. (Snip) Jon Scott asked Thomas and Fox News Contributor Alan Colmes about the reaction by CNN Anchor Candy Crowley to Carson’s speech when she

This week’s TIME magazine cover features 2016 GOP frontrunner Marco Rubio with an inescapable headline: “THE REPUBLICAN SAVIOR”. Given Mitt Romney’s stinging defeat in November and the almost-comical party-infighting since, Republicans could use that kind hero right now. While Mr. Rubio’s story is inspiring (son of Cuban immigrants graduates law school cum laude, overwhelmingly elected to the U.S. Senate at only age 38), and while he’s currently the best candidate to take on Hillary Clinton in 2016 (assuming she runs, which she will), there may be a very distinguished someone (who has never held public office) ready

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said that President Obama originally designed the budget sequester as a threat to get Republicans to agree to raise taxes, never intending it to actually be policy. “[S]equestration was designed as a budget threat, not as a budget strategy, Durbin said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday. “When the president proposed the sequester, it was as an incentive to those of us in Congress to work together on a bipartisan basis to solve these problems. It was supposed to be so awful that the super committee would finally reach a bipartisan agreement.” Headline split by staff.

If the first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem, Democratic leaders are not quite in agreement on the question of federal spending. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday that President Obama does believe Washington has a spending problem, contradicting a claim by House Minority Leader Nancy E. Pelosi. Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, said Sunday it is "almost a false argument to say we have a spending problem." She instead called the fiscal crisis "a government deficit problem."

One thing you won’t hear when President Obama delivers his State of the Union address Tuesday: An ambitious new plan to rein in the debt. In recent days, the White House has pressed the message that, if policymakers can agree on a strategy for replacing across-the-board spending cuts set to hit next month, the president will pretty much have achieved his debt-reduction goals. “Over the last few years, Democrats and Republicans have come together and cut our deficit [over the next decade]

A Great Dane has returned to his owner a year after he was snatched by burglars during an opportunistic raid on her home. The heart-warming tale began when Zorro, who weighs 170lbs, vanished from owner Marcie Trogdon´s house, in Jamestown, Virginia, in November 2011 after she popped out, leaving the door on the latch. When she returned minutes later, she realised thieves had struck and Zorro was nowhere to be seen. ´A laptop or a TV can be replaced. Zorro is like a family member. The more than 3,000 passengers on the stricken cruise ship stuck off coast of Mexico have turned into ´savages´ and are fighting over food, relatives have claimed. Those on board have no power and have been forced to sleep on deck in tents as there is no air conditioning in the sweltering cabins. The toilets are also not working meaning that passengers have had to make do with bags or buckets. Brent Nutt, whose wife Bethany is on board, claimed that brawling had started because some passengers have got so hungry and food is so scarce.

Researchers at Granada University in Spain have found that beer can help the body rehydrate better after a workout than water or Gatorade. Professor Manuel Garzon also claimed the carbonation in beer helps to quench the thirst and that its carbohydrate content can help replace lost calories, The Telegraph reports. The study involved a group of students who were asked to work out until their body temperature reached 104 degrees. Researchers then gave beer to half of the students and water to the other half.

Senate Democrats will press ahead with President Obama´s nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the next defense secretary, despite protestations from several Republicans that they don´t yet have enough information to make a decision. Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat and Armed Services Committee chairman, said Monday morning that he will schedule a committee vote for Tuesday afternoon — the precursor to holding a floor vote in the full Senate. Mr. Hagel, himself a former Republican senator, has drawn stern opposition from Senate Republicans who argue that he took dangerous stances in the past on Iran and Israel

The State Department has said that it never believed the September 11th attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was the result of a protest over an anti-Islam movie - directly contracting the rest of the Obama administration. By trying to distance her department from the inept and deceptive handling of the Benghazi attack, which left U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American officials dead, Hillary Clinton could help herself politically for a 2016 presidential run. A dramatic new account by the State Department reveals that Stevens was locked inside a ´safe room´ choking to death from diesel-heavy smoke

Allegations of shady campaign contributors and procurement of prostitutes are usually the ingredients of a political scandal that send the media into a feeding frenzy – unless, of course, the figure involved is a Democrat. When news broke that the FBI opened an inquiry into New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez’s jaunts (that may have included solicitation of prostitutes) to the Dominican Republic with a longtime campaign contributor, the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) networks responded with barely a murmur.

International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that 19 children, who were to be sold to fundamentalist Islamic boarding schools (madrassas), have been rescued. Traffickers lied to the children’s parents, saying they would take the children to Christian boarding schools in Dhaka, when in fact, they were intending to sell the children to various madrassas. Students from Dhaka University discovered the children and rescued them. This is not the first instance of Christian children being trafficked to madrassas, as upwards of 150 children have been rescued from similar situations since July 2012.

The letter is signed by former senators Norm Coleman and Joe Lieberman, former defense secretary Bob Gates, Bill Kristol, and many others. "Sequestration will result in unacceptable risk for U.S. national security. It will degrade our ability to defend our allies, deter aggression, and promote and protect American economic interests. It will erode the credibility of our treaty commitments abroad. It will be a self-inflicted wound to American strength and leadership in the world," reads the letter.

For a Los Angeles Police Department disciplinary panel, the evidence was persuasive: Rookie officer Christopher Jordan Dorner lied when he accused his training officer of kicking a mentally ill man during an arrest. But when a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge examined the case a year later in 2010 as part of an appeal filed by Dorner, he seemed less convinced. Judge David P. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 took away the John Birch Society´s prime issue -- communism -- but the organization is hoping to rebuild itself using Ron Paul supporters and opposition to a one-world government as a base. Anna Morkeski, the conservative organization´s state field director, said Maine´s status as a staunch Paul state, at least among Republicans -- initially, most of the Maine delegation to the party´s national convention last August backed Paul -- makes it a natural for the organization.
