Background checks represent
ground for compromise
on gun control
Washington Times, by David Sherfinski    Original Article
Posted By: Dreadnought- 2/10/2013 10:22:57 PM     Post Reply
Out of the flurry of ambitious gun control proposals in the wake of December’s school shooting in Connecticut, expanded background checks on gun sales are fast emerging as the “sweet spot” — as one Senate Democratic leader put it — between what gun control advocates seek and what can actually attract bipartisan support in Congress. Discussion of bans on so-called assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines have gradually given way to the more politically palatable ideas of strengthening the federal background check system or instituting near-universal background checks for gun buyers — even as proponents and opponents clash bitterly

White House: GOP spreading ‘myths’

The White House accused congressional Republicans on Sunday of spreading “myths” about President Obama’s efforts to avoid looming budget cuts and blamed the GOP for pushing an “unbalanced” approach that favors the wealthy. “The notion that President Obama hasn’t put forward a solution to deal with these looming cuts is false,” said Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer in a blog post. He said Mr. Obama’s latest offer to House Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, “meets the Republicans halfway on spending and on revenues, and would permanently turn off the sequester and put us on a fiscally sustainable path.”

U.S. said to be target of massive

A new intelligence assessment has concluded that the United States is the target of a massive, sustained cyber-espionage campaign that is threatening the country’s economic competitiveness, according to individuals familiar with the report. The National Intelligence Estimate identifies China as the country most aggressively seeking to penetrate the computer systems of American businesses and institutions to gain access to data that could be used for economic gain. The report, which represents the consensus view of the U.S. intelligence community, describes a wide range of sectors that have been the focus of hacking

The Truth About Dorner:
Leftism Is Violence
PJ Media, by Andrew Klavan    Original Article

There’s nothing for me to add to the great work already done by SooperMexican, Mediaite, Michelle Malkin, Sean Hannity and others critiquing the media coverage of alleged mad dog cop-killer Christopher Jordan Dorner. The media has been dishonest in trying to cover up Dorner’s left-wing views. They’ve been beyond hypocritical in drawing no link between Dorner’s acts and his politics — after they have repeatedly tried to link acts of violence to conservatism even when, as usual, there was no link to be made. Worst of all, as Big Government has shown, they are beginning to try to justify

Yes, that sounds like a parody movie trailer. But unfortunately this is a real story based on real things that happened in real life instead of brilliant satire. The Washington Post has an amazing story about how an Obama lawn sign ignited an intense legal battle in a Virginia neighborhood. Sam and Maria Farran put an Obama election sign up in their yard leading up to the 2008 election. But what seems like a harmless political statement allegedly violated the stipulations of the homeowners association that governs the sleepy Virginia neighborhood where they live.

More than 4,000 people spent Sunday stranded on a cruise ship after a fire in the engine room, according to Carnival. The Carnival Triumph, which left Galveston Thursday, is without propulsion and running on emergency generator power about 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and a tug boat has been dispatched to the ship, according to a company statement. The company reports that the ship´s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and only the aft engine room was damaged.

This morning on “This Week,” Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., dismissed recent gestures by prominent members of the GOP suggesting a softening of Republican positions as simply “lipstick on a pig.” “I think all of this stuff is just surface stuff. It’s like lipstick on a pig, ” Ellison said. “I mean, the bottom line is, the Republicans have a core values problem, not a ‘who knows who Tupac Shakur is’ problem.” Ellison was responding to ABC News political analyst and contributor Nicolle Wallace, who praised Marco Rubio on the roundtable. The Democrat leadership in the New Jersey Assembly plans on ramming through 24 different anti-gun measures on Feb. 13 and 14. Included in the measures are bans on magazines holding more than 10 rounds, the creation of even more gun free zones, prohibitions against purchasing ammunition on internet, the registration and regulation of ammunition sales, and the end of private gun sales. The magazine ban and the end of private gun sales are measures we see Democrats pushing in other states as well, like Colorado. Neither of these measures will reduce the likelihood or even the possibility of

Remember when the mainstream media mocked a politician who had to attend five colleges to graduate, whose academic record was less than outstanding, and whose subsequent success was proof of nothing? Remember how that was supposed to be a threat to national security, the economy, and so much else? That was so 2008, so Sarah Palin. It turns out that former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), who is now awaiting confirmation as Secretary of Defense, attended five colleges and was a "D" student. He volunteered to serve in Vietnam,

New footage of a speech by Chuck Hagel in 2008 has surfaced, in which the former Senator mocked the idea of continuing the U.S. policy of confronting Iran and supporting Israel. "When I hear the talk about--well you can’t talk with Iran, you can’t talk with Syria and we’re, we should stay where we are and support Israel, and so on, well you miss the point," he told the laughing audience at an event for his book, America: Our Next Chapter. Hagel added that the U.S. "shouldn´t even be thinking about the options of bombing Iran," even

According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security has stockpiled over 1.6 billion rounds of ammo for its various agencies, and one of the worst side effects of this appears to be a shortage of ammo for private gun owners. The question is--what if the shortage is intentional? Bear with me here. I am not a "conspiracy theorist" nor do I believe that DHS is stockpiling bullets in order to wage war on Americans, as some commentators have suggested. However, I do believe they know these massive ammo purchases are driving supply

After the testimonies of Secretary Panetta, General Dempsey, and Hillary Clinton on the Benghazi tragedy, it appears the Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama was off duty and not available to make a hard decision to press the military Chain of Command to rescue Americans under attack. The cover up appears to be a White House order to “Stand Down” and not issue a rescue mission operational order. For over seven hours he did nothing; no communications with his National Security team, and then he flew to Las Vegas for a campaign stop. “Weakness and dithering and flying to

NRA: Why ´universal´
checks won´t work

It seems so reasonable. In the minds of many, "universal background checks" for firearms transactions sounds like a good idea. But is it really? No. No idea is good if it doesn´t work. No legislation is reasonable if it fails to accomplish its purported goal — to prevent violent criminals and the mentally ill from acquiring firearms. Criminals won´t participate in a "universal" system. They´ll always steal or get their guns, and everything else they want, on the black market. Reasonable people know that criminals will never be part of the "universe."

Iran and Hezbollah, its Lebanese proxy, are building a network of militias inside Syria to preserve and protect their interests in the event that President Bashar al-Assad’s government falls or is forced to retreat from Damascus, according to U.S. and Middle Eastern officials. The militias are fighting alongside Syrian government forces to keep Assad in power. But officials believe Iran’s long-term goal is to have reliable operatives in place in the event that Syria fractures into separate ethnic and sectarian enclaves. A senior Obama administration official cited Iranian claims that Tehran was backing as many as 50,000 militiamen in Syria.

But McLain receives an uncommonly large portion of the nonprofit’s generosity, earning more than $430,000 a year in pay and other benefits, including membership at Raleigh’s exclusive Capital

Members who say they are providing tickets to gun violence victims include Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, Democratic Reps. Jim Langevin

Hollywood action star Steven Seagal has a few choice words for critics of his latest role. Members of the volunteer posse, some of them armed, began patrolling areas surrounding schools in Arizona’s most populous county, Maricopa, which includes Phoenix, in January. Seagal’s involvement was called a “mockery” by an Arizona state legislator, while a group of protesters also voiced their concern over Arpaio’s school posse protection plan. “Anybody who has criticized me

Gun control zealots state that we (the serfs of Obamaland) shouldn’t have “assault weapons with high capacity magazines” because we don’t “need” them. And these wizards—who don’t know diddly about guns—know exactly what we need. Oh, yes they do, girlfriend. If you don’t believe me just ask them. They’ll tell you what kind of guns you should and shouldn’t have even though their bodyguards and their children’s bodyguards have the exact battery that they forbid us to build. “Why can they live in a dynamic state of duplicity,” you ask?

WASHINGTON —In less than a month, a budget ax is set to fall on the federal government, indiscriminately chopping funding for the military and slicing money for various programs, including preschools and national parks. The $85 billion in cuts that would take effect from March 1 through September — the first installment of $1.2 trillion in reductions over the next decade — would strike just about every agency and service in an attempt to ease the budget deficit. The slashing, part of an automatic process known as sequestration, would affect the economy, government workers and average Americans
