Karl Rove has had a tough week since he announced he would be forming a new super PAC to help establishment Republicans fend off primary challenges from Tea Party candidates. The left had seemed to be giving Rove a pass for once. But he’s been hammered from the right by everyone from S.E. Cupp to Mark Levin to Donald Trump. Now, Lawrence O’Donnell has entered the fight, pitting Rove against the changing face of the GOP that he’s supposedly trying to help. O’Donnell set up his segment by saying, “Republicans are at war with Karl Rove.

A misty mountain range on the Philippine island of Luzon boasts more than 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, according to a new catalog of the region´s species. On the entire island, more than 150 reptile and amphibian species exist. The catalog, published Wednesday (Feb. 7) in the journal ZooKeys, is the first for the remote region, known as the Sierra Madre Mountains, which lies on the Northeastern portion of the island. The study reveals that the region may be a hidden hotspot for biodiversity. The study combined data from several extensive surveys done over the past years, as well

An investment Jack Lew made in the Cayman Islands has been flagged as an issue in the Treasury secretary nominee’s vetting by the Senate Finance Committee, according to multiple sources close to the confirmation process. The White House says the investment was previously disclosed and is already a public matter. Republican staff “have told us that there are concerns,” said Sean Neary, a spokesman for Finance Committee Democrats. “This came out through the vetting process in prior confirmations. Once it was looked into deeper, it was determined that it was not an issue. Lew has been completely transparent

The funeral of slain teen Hadiya Pendleton began today amid large crowds, long lines and heavy security prompted by the attendance of first lady Michelle Obama. While family and friends kept the focus on the 15-year-old girl who was shot dead in a South Side park, the first lady´s appearance inevitably brought attention to anti-gun efforts nationwide. Hadiya´s pastor, Courtney C. Maxwell from the Greater Deliverance Temple Church of Christ, opened the services about 11:15 a.m. after a heart-shaped balloon was placed near her casket. He thanked everyone for being at the Greater Harvest Baptist Church, including elected officials.

Republicans open to letting billions in sequester cuts go through figure they can blame the president if the economy goes south. But Democrats are betting they can shift that blame right back to the GOP. They’re so confident, in fact, that they’re already eyeing at least 10 Republican-held seats with strong military connections from Florida to California to target in 2014, after sequester cuts have trickled down to local bases where jobs are lost and voters notice.

Our topic for today is: How much do we care about physical fitness in an elected official? (Snip) The governor says he’s very healthy and that “there is a plan” for losing weight. But there is also a plan for totally funding the state employee pension system. I wouldn’t hold your breath. There’s a national accord that thin is generally better than fat. However, it’s hardly the biggest issue when you’re picking a governor. There are citizens all over the country who would trade their more compact leaders for Christie in a second. Just ask somebody in Pennsylvania. Or Illinois. The guy in Florida has the

Though India´s nationwide elections are not scheduled until 2014, the campaign is already underway as the Conservative opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gets set to name Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its candidate for prime minister. (Snip) Modi´s Reaganesque message of optimism resonates with Indians discouraged with the ruling left-center Congress Party that has ruled for all but 12 years of India´s existence as a nation. Economic "malaise" has set in, confidence in the future has dropped, and people believe that the government is unable to deal effectively with either leftist or Islamist terror

Tunisia is where the Arab Spring began just over two years ago. Until now it has set an encouraging example of progress toward democracy and pluralism. Free elections brought to power a coalition government pledged to pragmatic cooperation between a moderate-led Islamist party, Ennahda, and smaller, secular coalition partners. (Snip) Those hopes have been severely shaken by the murder on Wednesday of Chokri Belaid. Mr. Belaid, a human- rights activist and one of Ennahda’s most outspoken critics, had publicly challenged the party’s failure to investigate or prosecute violent acts of

I knew I was in trouble when the biologist from the Manitoba Conservation Department sat down next to me. "The bears look good," he said. "I haven´t seen them this fat in years." We´d both been hanging around the tiny town of Churchill, Manitoba, ground zero for everything having to do with polar bears. Every fall the town is overrun with bears waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze. The bears, in turn, are trailed by herds of tourists, tour guides, scientists, green-leaning types and B-list celebrities—all looking for communion with The Most Important Animal of Our Time.

Climbing trees, chasing mice, showing off to the ladies . . . four legs were always handy for Caffrey the cat. Then tragedy struck. When Caffrey was three, the handsome grey Persian was run over by a car and lost his left hind leg. Oh well. Not to worry. He happily carried on with three, thanks to a £3,500 series of operations that stitched up the damage and made the best of his front left paw, which was also injured in the crash. A dead man has left his $1 million estate to two soap stars that he had never met. Ray Fulk died last summer at the age of 71 in his farmhouse near Broadwell, Illinois. He died alone with no family and few friends. So he left his 160-acre estate to two actors that he felt close to - Kevin Brophy and Peter Barton. Brophy´s claim to fame was the 1977 TV show ´Lucan´ in which he played the main character who had been raised by wolves. A poster from the show was found in Fulk´s farmhouse,

Dirty Bingo, which was sponsored by the student-run Union Activities Board and designed to teach students safe sex practices, attracted attention for its choice of prizes that included vibrators and other sex toys. Students and parents called for administrators and members of the board to cancel the event, citing the prizes as an inappropriate use of student fees. Board President Lauryn Collier wrote in a prepared statement Thursday that

At the same time, the House plans to vote soon on legislation that would extend the current freeze on basic pay rates through the end of calendar 2013. The freeze was originally set for two years and scheduled to expire at the end of last year, but it was extended until a temporary budget measure expires next month. When the measure expires, federal employees will receive a 0.5 percent raise

From Joe Asch comes word that the Dartmouth campus police are, in the words of the College’s Media Relations department, “on the hunt for a student who allegedly verbally harassed two students.” The object of this manhunt stands accused of speaking faux-Chinese to two Chinese students. If captured, what will happen to the lout? According to the Media Relations Department, he could face expulsion. Other penalties could “include a mandatory sensitivity course or a paying a fine.” Such is life at a modern liberal arts college. Meanwhile, Asch notes that members of an African-American fraternity who physically beat pledges

The New York Times has called on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to remove New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez from his chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Under the editorial headline “Mr. Menendez’s Ethics Problem,” the newspaper said Menendez “was never a distinguished choice for chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the position he ascended to this month by virtue of seniority.” “Concerns about that quality gap have sharply escalated amid new disclosures about Mr. Menendez’s use of his position to advance the financial interests of a friend and big donor,” the Times wrote.

The Atlantic Council, chaired by former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), released a list late Friday evening of corporate donors as well as foreign governments that had funded it over the past five years. The list did not shed light on individuals such as Saad Hariri, whose family has given generously to the Atlantic Council and who has supported the Hamas terror organization publicly, as well as offering financial support to Syrian rebels. The Inner-City Muslim Action network (IMAN) is one Muslim institution that is offering a free medical clinic in a poor neighborhood. IMAN has existed for 15 years. On Oct. 19, 2011, Muslim Advocates President and Executive Director Farhana Khera sent a letter to Chief Counterterrorism Advisor John Brennan, listing numerous Islamic-based grievances against the FBI. On Nov. 3, 2011, Brennan capitulated and began a fundamental change of FBI practices. Khera charged that the FBI was bigoted, that they kept "antiquated and offensive documents about Muslims and Islam" on their intranet, and that some new recruits to the FBI were taught "that Islam is a religion that ´transforms a country´s culture into 7th-century Arabian ways.´" Regarding the "antiquated and offensive documents,"
