Eighteen months after the phrase first entered the collective public consciousness, the plight of the 99 percent is coming to mainstream superhero comics — via a new series from the second biggest publisher in the American comic industry, which just happens to be a subsidiary of a multi-national corporation that makes around $12 billion a year. Irony, anybody? In May, DC Comics will launch two new series taking place in their mainstream superhero universe that offer different insights into the class struggle in a world filled with superheroes, alien races and inexplicable events.
Newsweek/Daily Beast editor Tina Brown said something Friday night that should wake up the Left and their media minions. Appearing on HBO´s Real Time, Brown said during the online Overtime segment, "He´d [Obama] be impeached by now for drones if he was W. Bush" (video follows with transcript and commentary): BILL MAHER, HOST: [Reading from viewer question] “The Obama administration has been heavily targeting whistleblowers" - true - "and information activists. What can we do to hold the government accountable for this harsh crackdown?” Yeah, the Democrats, [Laughs], their view on Obama seems to be
Some on the left are finding it easy to support the "manifesto" issued by LA fugitive cop killer Chris Dorner. But there are others who support the man himself and even others who support what he´s doing. And they call the right crazy? Here are a few tweets: Is it wrong that I´m rooting for Christopher Dorner? I know the media is portraying him as a nut job but I feel like he´s telling the truth. Best of luck to Chris Dorner, ex-LAPD, anti-cop, killing americas corrupt police officers
The U.S. Navy on Thursday released the service record of Christopher Dorner, who is wanted in connection with three shootings in the Los Angeles area. Dorner was commissioned in 2002, and his loss date was Feb. 1, 2013. During his time with the Navy he was stationed in San Diego, Bahrain, Nevada, and a "mobile inshore undersea warfare unit." Dorner has awards for pistol expertise and marksmanship. He has medals for National Defense Service, the Iraq Campaign, Global War on Terrorism Service, and Sea Service Deployment
The “dash for wind” has been prompted by a cut in subsidies due this year and an apparent relaxing of the planning rules. Some 763 turbines are due to be built onshore in 2013, up 60 per cent from last year. Already there are 4,366 turbines in operation in the UK providing 8.2GW of power, enough to power 4.5 million homes for a year. There are a further 7,843 turbines that have been approved but are yet to be built, bringing the total due to go up in the UK to more than 10,000.
It´s hard to imagine the media doing anything other than to express outrage should some low-life hacker hack into email accounts connected to President Obama´s family -- especially if something was found that might damage Obama politically. But that same courtesy was not afforded the Bush family yesterday. After a hacker released emails that contained correspondence between members of the Bush family and the two former presidents, the media had a gay old time.
The revelations that came out of the Senate Armed Services Committee this week in regards to the Benghazi attack will be a turning point in this investigation. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testified that he was not in contact with President Barack Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the night of the attack. They did have a pre-scheduled meeting of the National Security team for twenty minutes at 5:00 pm (11pm Benghazi time), but after the meeting broke up, nothing but silence
We all remember when Bill Clinton argued that it all depends on what the meaning of ´is´ is. We were all disgusted that the office of the President had become so low that we were deciphering legalistic terms and arguing about sex acts. Oh for the good ole days. President Obama´s disregard for the truth has made Bill Clinton seem like a novice. His statements are always riddled with inconsistency. Many could easily have been dissected with a curious media, but that hasn´t happen. Very few people can lie as well. Leon Panetta testified
President Barack Obama will focus his State of the Union address on boosting job creation and economic growth at a time of high unemployment, underscoring the degree to which the economy could threaten his ability to pursue second-term priorities such as gun control, immigration policy and climate change. Obama also may use Tuesday´s prime-time address before a joint session of Congress to announce the next steps for concluding the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Obama´s State of the Union marks his second high-profile speech to the nation in about three weeks, after his
CHICAGO — First lady Michelle Obama will join some of Illinois’ most recognizable politicians and clergy Saturday to mourn a 15-year-old honor student whose death has drawn attention to staggering gun violence in the nation’s third-largest city. But Hadiya Pendleton’s family says her Saturday funeral service won’t be about politics, but about remembering a girl who loved to dance, once appeared in an anti-gang video and died just days after performing at one of President Barack Obama’s inauguration events.
Italy lost 700,000 Italians in World War I, and then immediately voted in Mussolini´s fascists, which militarized the whole of Italian society. If you wonder why Italians cheat on their taxes today, it´s because they have 25 centuries of experience with nasty tyrants like Mussolini.(snip)Today, a politician named Beppe Grillo is rising to fame and fortune. His Italian audiences are laughing themselves silly at Beppe´s neo-fascist schtick. Tomorrow... maybe they won´t laugh.
Hi, I’m Senator Lisa Murkowski from the state of Alaska. In this new Congress I continue to serve as the lead Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and today I want to discuss the tremendous opportunities that await us in those areas. Energy has been a source of anxiety for our nation since the 1970s. And yet thanks to new technologies, an era of scarcity is quickly giving way to one of abundance. We now have a 90-year supply of natural gas, enough oil to eliminate OPEC imports for decades. (Video)
On the same day that I offered to the S.C. Senate a resolution that would formally ask our congressional delegation to take action to mitigate Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s lifting of a 1994 ban on women in combat roles, this paper chose to offer an editorial in support of Secretary Panetta’s action. Certainly that is the privilege of the press in a land that still values the First Amendment to the Constitution. Interestingly enough, in making the case for this monumental change, the following sentenced was used: “Other nations have long demonstrated that women were suitable for combat.”
Hi, everybody. Over the last few years, Democrats and Republicans have come together and cut our deficit by more than $2.5 trillion through a balanced mix of spending cuts and higher tax rates for the wealthiest Americans. That’s more than halfway towards the $4 trillion in deficit reduction that economists and elected officials from both parties say we need to stabilize our debt. I believe we can finish the job the same way we’ve started it — with a balanced mix of more spending cuts and more tax reform.
MUMBAI — India hanged a man on Saturday who had been convicted of involvement in the 2001 attack on Parliament that killed nine people. The hanging of Afzal Guru, a 43-year-old militant with the group Jaish-e-Mohammad, came more than a decade after the Dec. 13, 2001, suicide attack on India’s Parliament in which five gunmen opened fire, killing nine people, including security officials and a journalist. The execution drew protests from human rights groups concerned about the growing use of capital punishment in such cases. Headline split, source corrected.
Former Texas Republican State Chairman and ex-Reagan administration official Tom Pauken has released this statement on Karl Rove: Karl Rove campaigned in 1980 against Ronald Reagan and for George Herbert Walker Bush in the Republican presidential primary in Texas. In the general election, I never heard at the time that Karl was running the Reagan campaign in our state. Karl was working for Gov. Clements, but the Reagan leaders in Texas were Ray Barnhart and Ernie Angelo. I knew most of the Reagan leaders around the state, and Karl was not part of that group
If there is only one grassroots conservative in the country who is happy about the rollout of Karl Rove’s Conservative Victory Project, it’s Representative Steve King of Iowa. Allies of the conservative potential Senate candidate are practically chortling about how the swings taken at King by Steven Law, president of the Conservative Victory Project, are boosting King’s prospective candidacy. “Steve King hadn’t done anything to Karl Rove, so they fired the first shot, but I guarantee it won’t be the last,”
The door was the type you see in squalid gangland movies — a thick slab of board reinforced with iron bars. It had no window or handle, just a tiny peep-hole and a sign that warned: ‘No Loitering’. Since there were no names beneath the apartment buzzers, I pressed them all, then waited in the driving snow, reminded with every menacing stare that this was Chicago’s ‘murder central’ and the only white men who ventured here were bailiffs and cops. Just as I was about to beat a tactical retreat, a red-hatted head poked from the top-floor window.
Offering comments on behalf of outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar Wednesday, President Obama suggested the Hispanic Cabinet member is more authentically American than New England´s Pilgrims. "His ancestors were here before the Mayflower set sail," Obama noted. Obama talked about Salazar´s (pictured, left) Spanish roots and segued from that to focus on how hard he´s "working to get immigration reform passed." The President then repeated a phrase common among Nativists, insinuating that lands belong to ethnicities and not countries: "[Salazar and] his family did not cross the border, the border crossed them. And
Organized labor has become a leading proponent of President Barack Obama’s immigration agenda, a departure from more than a century of hostility to foreign-born workers. Some of the nation’s most influential labor leaders have heaped praise on comprehensive immigration plans that will help grant citizenship to many of the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants. The AFL-CIO, one of the nation’s largest labor unions, kicked off a 14-city rally backing the president’s plan on Wednesday. “This is a top priority for America’s unions because a roadmap to citizenship for those who are American in every way except on paper
Two police officers rescued an adorable baby deer today after it fell into a frozen-over lake - and they fed it popcorn to nurse it back to health. Robert Femia and Peter Bogachunas, who are with the Marine Bureau in Suffolk County, New York, noticed the animal´s head bobbing in the icy waters off Fire Island just after 1 p.m. Seeing the freezing fawn was in distress, the officers drove their boat over to it and pulled it from the water, which was seven to eight feet deep, before quickly wrapping it in blankets. But despite their efforts to warm
1) Starting in the sixties there was an explosion of children born out-of-wedlock and kids who don´t grow up in two parent families fare more poorly percentage wise on just about any and every scale imaginable including substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, suicide rates, criminality and homelessness. 2) Many people are becoming so childlike in their dependence on the government that they can´t save for their own retirement, escape from an oncoming hurricane, or even purchase their own birth control without the government handling it for them. 3) Our legal system encourages frivolous lawsuits, is punitively expensive and because of
As America´s secretive but expanding drone program draws increasing scrutiny, some U.S. senators are floating the idea of an assassination court to determine whether to approve the remote-control killing of a suspected terrorist. The idea was discussed at Thursday´s confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee John Brennan, a supporter of the drone program, who called the idea of a court ´worthy of discussion.´ The program has been controversial as some say it offers the administration power to kill without any oversight or regulation, even if the person being assassinated is an American. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
On Wednesday, local Cincinnati TV station WCPO did a report (HT John Fund at National Review via Doug Powers at Michelle Malkin´s blog) reported that "The Hamilton County Board of Elections is investigating 19 possible cases of alleged voter fraud" (Cincinnati is the county seat of Hamilton County). The most potentially outrageous case involves Melowese Richardson, who "admits to voting twice in the last election." Even though "she has worked the polls since 1988," she offered a hopelessly lame excuse for the multiple vote. She may also have voted four additional times under others´ names, and also
An ´unflattering´ picture of Beyoncé performing at the Super Bowl´s halftime show has transformed into a fully-fledged meme; one to rival McKayla Maroney´s now-iconic ´Not Impressed´ scowl. After Beyoncé´s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, emailed Buzzfeed earlier this week to ask that the site ´respectfully change´ several images of her client to ´some better photos´ from the halftime show, her attempt backfired in epic proportions. Buzzfeed published the email, and in the Internet phenomenon known as the Streisand Effect, one image in particular circulated so virulently it became an instant meme. The original seven images that Ms Noel-Schure asked Buzzfeed to remove
Dr. Benjamin Carson got quite a bit of attention for making a big speech at the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday morning sticking up for conservative principles, with President Obama in attendance. Sean Hannity invited Carson onto his show tonight, remarking that it was an “amazing speech.” Carson explained why he felt the need to speak out as he did against the policies of a man sitting mere feet from him. (Snip) Hannity told Carson that his speech “moved me deeply.” Carson said he has received overwhelmingly positive reactions since yesterday, mostly because he
